Alan Moore's rantings

If a boat does that, then what would our modern weaponry be able to accomplish? Seems like it wouldn't be very difficult

First, chill out. No, I re-phrase, chill the **** out. I mean no disrespect, but you seem to be overreacting

second. In no way am I advocating for, against, or take any other position on pornography. It exists, and that is all I will say on the matter.

Third, and most relevant to your comic, if you want to know what I mean
by horror-porn read Neonomicon and find out (unless you are under the age of 16, then don't read it). If it does not meet the criteria that you might consider horror porn, or it seems an inaccurate label, by all means post so,
and come up with a better one.

fourth Alan Moore's "Lost Girls" is porn, he expressly states that, so Moore is no stranger to that particular form of expression

I read it because I was an HP Lovecraft fan many years ago. While Moore incorporates some elements of the Cthulhu mythos, in an interesting interpretation, my feeling was that he was more going for shock value,
as opposed to a fresh and creative approach. IMO.

I'm not 16, I'm 32...which is why I don't use those silly "porn" labels for everything, which is just another trend or fad that came about this past decade. You ask me to come up with a better "label", how about we just not label things in that manner. If it's horror based, whether it's a movie a book or a video game, than it's a horror movie/book/video game. Adding the word porn is unnecessary and to be honest just silly.

I haven't read Lost Girls, but from what I've read about it, I'll agree that it's a bit pornographic in the more common use of the word, IE: porn = sex.

Sorry if I'm coming off harsh, but I can't stand the placing of the word "porn" after everything nowadays. Before roughly 4-5 years ago, no one was labeling everything as "torture porn", "horror porn" etc...

It's just a trend that people latch onto. Reminds me of how numerous people across the internet would incorrectly use the word "hack" to describe an actor, writer or director they simply didn't like...even if they completely didn't understand the meaning of the word. It was just another go to catch phrase that people mindlessly used.

What's Moore's problem? I thought he hated his movies.

It started in the late 90s, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie basically sealed his opinion

Don't get me wrong: I used to rail about his gender politics, but after having an enlightening debate this past weekend, have come to consider it from a different perspective. I will always hate the Killing Joke - and he even admitted he regrets writing it in an old interview-but, the man has had a terrific bibliography. I'd give my left hand to discuss magick and the Ripper with him (considering I researched the policing methods of the time for a research paper.) While I don't agree with his policies on creators' rights, he's entitled to his own informed opinion (a similar example would be George R.R. Martin's stance on fanfiction: while I disagree with him, he's reached a point with his writing where he's allowed to say controversial things. He has a stack of Hugos and other awards attesting to intelligence and craftsmanship. Still, I would give my left hand to hang out with him for an afternoon.)

Once Alan Moore figured out you like comic books and/or superhero films he'd go all killer klown on you. Not worth it, man. :hoboj:

He needs to get over himself. All those fanboys who praise him gave him an ego over the years and I love that quote from Morrison basically sticking it to Moore.
Ego is definitely something Morrison knows a lot about.

Neonomicon has a scene where a woman gives a hand job to a Deep One. Just saying.

Pretty much all of Moore's current work revolves around or heavily features sex. While I agree that the "porn" gets attached to something much too quickly these days, attaching it to much of Moore's current work isn't much of a leap.

You posted a great response; I needed a good laugh today. :pal:

I still love the guy. Writing-wise, he's one of my heroes actually. Why?
Because he's Alan Moore!
Watchmen, V For Vendetta, The Killing Joke, LoEG, Promethea, Swamp Thing, From Hell, etc.

The guy's the master. So what if he's become a bit grumpy in his old age? Most people do. Besides, after all he's done for the medium (and the largely terrible way the medium's treated him back) I think he's entitled to it...

He's not entitled to be a hypocrite. No one is. He criticizes the industry for the getting away from children when he had his success for it. It's like Michael Bay criticizing the film industry for having too many explosions in movies today.

Love the guy's work, but the guy's nothing but a senile old man today.

I agree. I understand why people are using it, but I've never been a big fan of the usage of the word.

This whole thread is just Fussbudget Porn.

I believe nowadays George's stance is "you can write it but I don't want to know about it." I can't really blame him - Marion getting sued because her story was similar to someone's fanfiction set in her literary world was wrong.

So what does Moore like, exactly?

While I find these rantings mildly entertaining I wish Moore and Miller would go into detail about the single moment that made them lose it.

I have a feeling it had to do with some greasy nerd praising them at a comic book convention to the point where they regretted ever becoming icons of this industry.

.

I agree.

Moore's famous for making comics geared toward adults.

Why did he do it if he thought comics were only for kids?

I actually think Moore has something of a point here. His point is a little extreme and uninformed, but it seems that most current superhero titles being published today concern themselves more with rehashing the same old crap every six months rather than trying to do anything special with it. Thanos is gonna destroy the earth...again! The Joker's escaped from Arkham and killed a crap ton of people...again! And all these stories do is get lost in the massive wave of superheroic mundanity. On top of that, alot of it amounts to nothing more than glorified fan fiction. Waid's Daredevil is an exception. I'm sure there are a few others as well that pro-actively try to expand and engage readers on a deeper level than just dishing out the same returning-like-clockwork cosmic threat and the death/resurrection of a character every 6 months.

I suppose Moore thought he was writing to the kids with Watchmen, rather than writing down to them.

Moore's what you'd call an eccentric but he has had a definite point in his opposition to the films made about his work. A lot of them aren't very good. I admire the man for not compromising on his principles.

The language of Moore's criticisms may be extreme, but his criticisms generally have a solid point that i tend to agree with. i think morrison had a good point too though in how moore approaches these situations.

oh, and by the way, trying to attack moore's criticisms by attacking his work isnt gonna fly. the dude has written multiple works that have by and large solidified him as one of comics greatest and most prolific writers. watchmen, v for vendetta, from hell, leage of extraordinary gentlemen, and lost girls are all brilliant, just to name a few.
