Conan Exiles clarifies PvE and PvP rulesets, server wipes

January 17, 2017 22 Comments

Last week, Funcom explained that Conan Exiles will have multiple rulesets for PvE and PvP: purist, relaxed, hardcore, roleplay, experimental, and random, in official and player-run flavors. In response to player concerns, the studio now says it'll offer more -- and will change up how wipes of these servers work.
"We understand your concerns and we've been listening. As a result of your feedback we’ve decided to include three types of official servers to accommodate both preferences: PvP servers, PvE servers and PvP Blitz servers. These settings will only apply to official servers. Admins are free to choose whatever settings they want on unofficial servers. The regular official PvP and PvE servers will not be wiped. The PvP Blitz servers will provide an accelerated experience, but will reset after 30 days. This ensures that players on PvP Blitz servers will be able to experience everything Conan Exiles has to offer before their progression is reset. PvP Blitz servers will be tagged in the server description so you can easily differentiate them from the regular PvP and PvE servers."
And the studio has once again noted that custom, player-run shards can have a wide combination of settings from the rulesets, including accelerated progression.

Conan Exiles has formally launched early access with mixed reviews and new trailer

January 31, 2017 Leave a comment

[YT]K3ySWsFyZyc[/YT]
Funcom's Conan Exiles formally launched overnight, sending early access purchasers into the antique but brutal world of Conan the Barbarian. Despite some confusion over the official server list, which has been limited to 100 for now (but with hundreds more player-hosted servers), the game's launch actually went off rather well, which is high praise for the company whose first MMORPG was once dubbed the "worst launch of all time."

The studio has also begun discussing its immediate plans for the game, including trebuchets, better animations for captured thralls, and a dye system for gear, among other content and bug fixes. The game is expected to remain in early access for around a year.

Reviews on Steam are "Mixed" as of press time with just under 600 players having reviewed it. Massively OP's Stream Team played the game last night for those who want to check it out with their own eyeballs before putting up any dough. That stream, plus the launch trailer, is down below!

Conan Exiles addresses tech issues post launch, laughs at dong obsession

February 1, 2017 54 comments

Funcom's brand-new early access survival sandbox Conan Exiles got a patch yesterday aiming to clean up multiple issues in the game, including server sorting and selection, Steam Connect tools, disconnects, and building damage.

You should also never immediately die of hunger after respawning.

Bonus.
On Twitter, the studio told fans that it's still working on boosting server capacity "as soon as tomorrow, but it will take time." It's also working on rubberbanding problems and is promises patches on the daily.

Meaaaaannnnnwhile, the internet has discovered that egalitarian body sliders mean lots and lots of male anatomy. (Hey dudes, if you're discombobulated by the sudden obsession with your sparkly bits, imagine how we've felt all this time!) Here's one NSFW example -- totes not safe for work, but amusing nonetheless -- retweeted by a Funcom employee. You're welcome!

Conan Exiles hits 40K concurrent players

February 2, 2017 41 comments

Despite mixed reviews and technical shenanigans, Conan Exiles is enjoying a heady first week of early access. Funcom reports that the survival sandbox has already seen up to 40,000 concurrent players. As of the writing of this article, the game was in the top 10 most-played games on Steam.

The studio acknowledges that the game is seeing performance issues (namely, lag) that it didn't have in previous rounds of testing. "One of our main priorities right now is reducing server lag. There is no singular issue that is causing this, but a set of issues we need to resolve," Funcom said.

Conan Exiles has already put out multiple patches and is preparing a larger one for next week that should address several issues, such as network congestion, players getting stuck, and parts of buildings not showing up at all.Read more

Conan Exiles plans to toughen up raiding

February 2, 2017 13 comments

Responding to claims that raiding in Conan Exiles is way too easy as it is right now, Funcom said that it will soon address these issues by balancing sieges and village assaults.

In a post on Reddit, a representative said that a patch is coming tomorrow to toughen up tier 1 and tier 2 buildings so that they won't be so easy to take down. Other adjustments to improve the raiding scene including making steel (and as a result, steel weapons) more rare and stripping arrows of the ability to harm structures.

"This is just the beginning of the early access balancing act, and we’re going to be keeping a close eye out on how you all adapt to these changes and other adjustments we make as new features are introduced," the studio said.

Conan Exiles has already sold 320K copies, 'all costs recouped'

February 7, 2017 48 comments

Funcom has just announced what appears to be excellent news for investors and gamers alike: Conan Exiles has sold 320,000 copies worldwide -- that's net sales, which excludes refunds and chargebacks. It gets better.
"In addition, all of the costs directly related to this game have been recouped and the project is now operationally profitable. [...] Direct costs are considered to be those related to salaries, social security and equipment for the development, technology and marketing teams, external PR & Marketing expenses and other external consulting or licensing expenses directly attributable to the project."
Work on the PC early access version -- and the planned Xbox One edition -- "continues as planned." PS4 dev begins later in 2017.
The company's full investor report for Q4 2016 is due out at the end of February.Read more

First Impressions: Struggling to survive in Conan Exiles

February 7, 2017 28 comments

I am no stranger to covering survival sandboxes for Massively OP. I wrestled with dinosaurs before ARK: Survival Evolved was a thing. I got kidnapped and tried to drown myself in a puddle, spent days building a glorified shack before hackers or server admins could destroy them, and got to better understanding of what it's like to be an Asian gamer thanks to Valve's social experiment.

There have been some good memories for sure, but the cancelled games, broken promises, and fact that most of the genre is in an infinite non-launch state are just some of the reasons I've been losing faith in online, multiplayer survival games.

I love the idea of PvP allowing for meaningful social gameplay, but in reality, I mostly experience only ganking. But without PvP, I generally get so bored of PvE that I run into the arms of a (J)RPG so I can get drama and permadeath in a finished product, often without kids screaming at me to stop moving and just die.

But here I am again: roped into another shot at the genre. I'm looking at pay-to-play Conan Exiles like a launch title, "early access" be damned!

Conan Exiles gets spotlighted for nudity and for its digital comic

February 14, 2017 32 comments

The long-standing joke, for ages, was the man who adamantly explains to others that he purchases Playboy magazine for the articles, not the pictures of naked women.

The online version has provided an amusing reversal on the trope; one of the writers plays Conan Exiles not for the nudity, but for the immersion you get by being naked in the middle of the desert. Because if you can't imagine a hot wind blowing across your dangly bits before you build yourself a shelter, what's the point?

One may assume that the game's comic features less content related to those aforementioned dangly bits and more content related to the Exiled Lands and the lore behind them. If you haven't already read the one-shot digital comic, or if you have and really want to know more about what went into making it, there's an interview up now with the writer. And yet it doesn't mention the importance of nudity once. How weird.Read more

Conan Exiles' biggest patch to date is coming this week

February 14, 2017 16 comments

Hold on to any complaints that you might have about Conan Exiles right now, because they may not be valid in a few days' time. Funcom gave a sneak peek of this week's patch today, telling players that it's the largest that the team has assembled for the survival sandbox to date.

Among the many changes and additions on tap are improvements to server performance, less jittery NPCs, arrows that fly with a purpose, a balance pass on bows, rhinos that won't try to walk through you, feat rebalancing, a nerf to emu XP (noo!), better-looking female heads, uniforms for the Dogs of the Desert, and a kibosh on the ability to punch rocks into bits ("This privilege is reserved only for Conan himself.").

The team also announced a couple of changes to how land claiming will work with this update: "Small placeables will no longer claim land, and NPC camps now have their own land claim to prevent people from building so close to them that they stop spawning NPCs."Read more

Conan Exiles unloads its kitchen sink patch and opens up its test server

The sizable update that Conan Exiles fans have been anticipating since, uh, yesterday has finally arrived on the servers. Chants of "Patch 15.2.2017! Patch 15.2.2017!" are being heard around the world as players rejoice about all of the improvements to the bloodthirsty sandbox, including feat rebalancing and girl heads that don't look deformed. This game has high standards!

If you don't want to be caught off-guard with any future releases, you now have the option to check out bleeding-edge builds on the new "testlive" server. While not all upcoming patches will be posted to this branch, those that are will be available to anyone to test, whether player or server admin. There are also new forums devoted to all things testlive, although only forum mods and Funcom staff can make new threads there.

"Testlive builds can be played online on an official Funcom server or offline locally," Funcom said. "The Testlive server will be reset constantly, so don’t get very attached to your progress there."Read more

Conan Exile
doesn't have pets like most games -- here, people are the pets. And to acquire said slave labor you need to hunt down NPCs and drag them back to be chained to a wheel of pain to make them your thralls. Yes, you literally have to completely break their spirits! Massively OP's MJ is not sure she's up to enslaving folks, but she'll help friends increase their household. Tune in live at 9:00 p.m. to see how fares the hunt for human pets.

Funcom is now region-locking Conan Exiles' official servers

February 20, 2017 22 comments

If you're a fan of playing survival sandboxes with your friends around the world, better scrape together some pennies to invest in a private server: Conan Exiles has implemented region locks.

"We have decided to East/West region lock the official servers for three reasons," Community Manager Jens Erik told Steam players at the tail end of last week. "The language barrier and the different playstyles is proving jarring for a lot of players. Also, the vastly different time zones between regions made offline raiding an unavoidable issue for a lot of players who would wake up to all their stuff being completely ruined."

The locks appear to affect both PvP and PvE servers, in spite of the fact that PvE servers aren't subject to the same timezone exploitation issues.

Conan Exiles is bringing up new European servers, already looms over PAX East

February 23, 2017 5 comments

Funcom announced today that it's found a partner to host its Conan Exiles servers in Europe: G-Portal.

"This week the remaining European servers for Conan Exiles have been going up one by one," says the studio.

"We’ve already rolled a decent number of servers and the rest of them will be ready in a short while thanks to our new server partner! Servers will be popping up all over Europe, from west to east, so look for the ones with the best ping to find the one closest to you. The old Pingperfect servers will be brought up with the same name and server database as before, so players can jump right in to continue their adventure in the Exiled Lands."

Early this month, Funcom told players it was parting ways with its original server host, PingPerfect, and switched to Gameservers, which it believed would be better able to handle the apparently huge demand for the game. Then, last weekend, the studio abruptly region-locked official servers for the game, sending legitimate international communities into turmoil as replacement servers have been coming up slowly all week.

Conan Exiles preps player modders, patches up modding fails

February 24, 2017 5 comments
http://massivelyop.com/tag/conan-exiles
Conan Exiles' big dev blog out today ought to be a big help for gamers looking to run their own survival sandbox servers and tricking them out: It's all about building your own mods, which is basically like putting up a sign that says Bree, read me!

Existing mods can already be downloaded through the Steam Workshop, but if you want to make your own, Funcom says, you're going to need the dev kit, launcher, and UE4 editor -- piece of cake, right?

If you're not familiar with how Workshop works and are jumping in as a player, all you really need to know is that you'll be asked to download any mods the server is using as you're logging in, which is one of the rare modding advantages of running Workshop-capable games through Steam.

CONAN EXILES DELAYS XBOX ONE VERSION UNTIL LATER THIS YEAR, CORRECTS SERVER PATCH ISSUES

March 3, 2017 6 comments

If you're eagerly anticipating playing Conan Exiles on your Xbox One, you're going to need to be more patient. The game's official Twitter account announced that the port to the platform will be delayed until Q3 for unspecified reasons.

Follow
CONAN EXILES @ConanExiles

We've postponed the release of the Xbox One version of #ConanExiles to Q3 2017.
5:20 AM - 3 Mar 2017

The good news for people who are already playing is that the game received a small patch intended to fix a few exploits and improve game server startup speed as well as region-specific server issues. Unfortunately, players seem to find that it's caused more of a server meltdown than anything, which was sort of the opposite of the intent. The developers have promised that they're addressing these issues as a top priority, although if you're experiencing any issues we're sorry to say that there is no ETA for a fix at the moment. If you lost your placeable items, you will have to do a bit of legwork to reset that problem. So perhaps that's why Xbox users will have to wait a bit.

Conan Exiles previews 2017 plans, throws shade on early access abusers

March 6, 2017 6 comments

Though it's fun for the broader industry, GDC has been a bit of a dud for our genre for years now. If you're willing to expand your horizons past pure MMORPGs, however, there's plenty of juice.

Exhibit A: Funcom's Conan Exiles presence at the show. PC Gamer has a report out today on Funcom's plans for the game, including the clothing and armor dye system (coming this month), mounts and taming, PvE purge events stuffed with iconic Conan NPCs, better thrall micro-management, a lush foresty biome (bring your warmer clothes!), trebuchets that hurl rocks and dead bodies, and a new sewer dungeon.

Funcom's Joel Bylos even sneaked in a dig on unspecified games that launch early access and linger there indefinitely while charging for DLC. Conan, of course, has vowed to launch by this time next year and has promised to avoid paid DLC during early access.

Massively OP will be meeting with Funcom at this weekend's PAX East, so stay tuned for more, and in the meantime, check out the videos below.

Conan Exiles - The future of Conan Exiles

  • 35,107 views1 day ago
It's full speed ahead for Conan Exiles development this year, with no plans to slow down the game's pace over the next several months. Funcom has released a video from the GDC show floor detailing the game's development plans for the next year or so. The bad news is that it's not a quick video, clocking in at just a bit below 15 minutes with the bustling sounds of a convention in the background. The good news, of course, is that it is a thorough video.

Players can look forward to seeing small updates to the game every one to two weeks, with larger mechanical updates coming along every few months. The first major update will include siege warfare and all of its associated frills, while the second update includes NPC armies attacking player structures to provide something of an endgame scenario. Check out the whole video just below for more looks into the future of the game.

I really hope they can do all those things, so far this game looks very promising.
Sadly the ps4 version comes out in roughly one year, that is very long for someone like me who's fingers are itching to play this.

Conan Exiles will have no boners on Xbone

March 8, 2017 64 comments

As it stands right now, players in Conan Exiles may stride across the land with mighty swords or short stabbing implements held high in the breeze, and also you can pick up a sword if you want to. But it appears that players on Xbox One (commonly shortened to "Xbone" because sometimes life loves irony) will be unable to thrust forward into the unknown. According to creative director Joel Bylos, the team was told outright that there were to be no rods dirtying up this game of filthy, scrabbling violence.

Bylos is unsure whether the ladies will still be able to go **** out for being exiled in a wasteland and trying to kill other people, but he knows that the dongs will be gone as surely as they are omitted from LEGO games. There's also no word about whether or not PlayStation 4 players will be able to enjoy the simple joys of having their digital bits flapping in the breeze. Of course, you can enjoy that in the PC verson, so if that's a selling point, you needn't feel limp and weak.Read more

PAX East 2017: Talking Conan Exiles on the show floor with Funcom

March 12, 2017 31 comments

If you're a fan of Funcom and the games it makes, Conan Exiles probably has you breathing a bit easier than you have in a while. It's an indisputable success for the developers, who have been in a difficult financial situation for the past several years. Now they've got a pretty big hit on their hands, big enough to take out a sizable booth on the PAX East show floor to demonstrate the harsh survival of the game.

I had a chance to chat with some of the Funcom staff on site as well as an opportunity to play the game a bit myself. (Although that was mostly an exercise in getting gored by rhinos and eaten by alligators, so MJ is probably the better source of information on the game mechanics.) They revealed to me just how big of a success the game has actually been for Funcom, hitting its twelve-month sales goal in 30 days. That's significant however you slice it, especially when you're discussing a buy-to-play game rather than a subscription setup.
