In response to impeachment, the president of Peru Pedro Castillo just declared himself a dictator but the military and police are not backing him.

Las Fuerzas Armadas rechazan el golpe de Estado y acuerdan apoyar al Congreso (The Armed Forces reject the coup and agree to support Congress)
This decision is added to the one adopted by the high command of the National Police, which in an emergency meeting agreed to reject the coup d'état by Pedro Castillo.

NY Times - Peru’s President Quickly Ousted After Moving to Dissolve Congress
Pedro Castillo announced the move just before Congress voted to impeach him. Much of his government resigned to protest what political leaders said was a coup attempt.

Boluarte became the country's first female president, and just a few hours before, had served as Peru's vice president. Boluarte will complete the mandate as president until July 2026. It is the sixth time that Peru has had a new president in less than five years.

NY Times - Peru’s President Tried to Dissolve Congress. By Day’s End, He Was Arrested.
Ahead of an impeachment vote by Congress, Pedro Castillo tried to dissolve the government and seize power. The attempt ended with his ouster and arrest.
LIMA, Peru — It was a day on which much of Peru was focused on Congress, where an impeachment vote was planned against the president on corruption charges.

But shortly before noon, the Peruvian leader addressed the country in a surprise televised address. He announced the dissolution of Congress and the installation of an emergency government, stunning political leaders across the spectrum, including his own allies, by effectively trying to carry out what was widely condemned as an attempted coup to cling to power.

Government officials resigned en masse. The top court declared the move unconstitutional. And the country’s armed forces and the national police issued a joint statement suggesting they would not support him.

Southern Poverty Law Center - White Nationalists, Other Republicans Brace for ‘Total War’
A collection of radical right figures including white nationalists and ultranationalist European leaders gathered in Manhattan for the New York Young Republicans Club’s (NYYRC) annual gala Saturday night, where that group’s president declared “total war” on perceived enemies.

”We want to cross the Rubicon. We want total war. We must be prepared to do battle in every arena. In the media. In the courtroom. At the ballot box. And in the streets,” NYYRC president Gavin Wax declared to a room full of supporters at 583 Park Ave., an event venue on New York’s Upper East side.

“This is the only language the left understands. The language of pure and unadulterated power,” Wax added.

At the five-hour event, which Hatewatch reporters attended, white nationalists Peter and Lydia Brimelow of VDARE hobnobbed with Steve Bannon, a former Trump adviser and White House official. Donald Trump Jr. was also in attendance.

Republicans publicly lauded members of an Austrian political party founded by World War II-era German Nazi party members. Racist political operative Jack Posobiec shared jokes across a table with Josh Hammer, the opinion editor of Newsweek. Multiple recently elected GOP congresspeople applauded Marjorie Taylor Greene, who told the NYYRC crowd in the event’s closing remarks that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol would have succeeded if she had planned it and that the insurrectionists would have been armed.

I fail to see how anyone can be jazzed to vote for someone ready to toss the Constitution into the trash. :(

My ex was totally ok with shooting criminals in the street without due process. When I told her that was a dictatorship, she said it was better than chaos.

A former coworker once said that the Constitution is the final word, as long as the Bible agrees.

These people are hardcore into control, as long as they are the ones in control.

I wonder if she would still be on board with killings on the street if it was her dad struck down while he was innocent. Innocent people go to jail even with due process, I imagine it would be much worse without, especially if you were a person of color. :(

She hated her dad and didn’t have much sympathy for people of color but I see what you mean. She was sure that the police rarely made mistakes and if they did, you probably deserved punishment for something anyway. She would have performed some mental gymnastics to explain how no one she knows would be in that position. She always had a way out.

The Washington Post - Teary Bolsonaro calls loss unfair, condemns violence, flies to Florida
SÃO PAULO — Two days before leaving office, ending a tumultuous four years as the race-baiting, Amazon-developing, coronavirus-downplaying, vaccine-skeptical leader of Latin America’s largest country, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remained defiant in a teary farewell address on Friday, defending his record and saying the election that led to his ouster was not impartial, but condemning violence against the result.

Then he flew to Florida, Brazilian media reported, where in the past he has met with former president Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. He apparently planned to skip the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday, when the outgoing leader traditionally presents the presidential sash to his successor, a ceremony intended to reaffirm the country’s young democracy.

Bolsonaro’s remarks, live-streamed for nearly an hour Friday morning, were his most extensive since he lost the election in October. He still has not conceded the race, but acknowledged that a new administration would take over on Sunday.

“Nothing is lost,” he told supporters. “Brazil is a fantastic country, and Brazil doesn’t end on January first.”

Concern is growing over security around Lula’s inauguration in Brasília on Sunday. Bolsonaro supporters have camped outside army installations since his Oct. 30 defeat to call for a military coup to keep him in power. A group of radical bolsonaristas set fire to buses and tried to invade federal police headquarters in the capital this month after the arrest of a Bolsonaro supporter who was accused of having “expressly summoned armed people to prevent the certification of elected” officials.

On Saturday, police said they defused a bomb planted by a Bolsonaro supporter in a tanker truck full of gas near the international airport in Brasília. They said the suspect told investigators his plan was to provoke chaos to draw military intervention.
