TRON: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski has signed on to direct the true firefighter tale No Exit

TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski has, according to a story today at Variety, lined up a new feature in the form of No Exit. Scripted by Black Hawk Down scribe Ken Nolan, No Exit will tell the true story of the Prescott Arizona Fire Department’s Granite Mountain Hotshots. Tasked with fighting wildfires, the 20-man crew risked it all when lightning ignited the Yarnell Hill Fire on June 30, 2013. Over a period of nearly two weeks, the Granite Mountain Hotshots bravely battled and, eventually, defeated the massive flames. The expense was great, however, as the incident claimed the lives of all but one of the Hotshots’ crew.

No Exit is set up through Black Label Media, Conde Nast Entertainment and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mike Menchel.
Plans for what would become No Exit were first announced back in 2014. At that time, several of the same producers were developing a feature tentatively titled Granite Mountain Hotshots. That iteration of the project had Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace‘s Scott Cooper attached to direct. It was said at the time that Brendan McDonough, the sole survivor of the Hotshots would, along with Amanda Marsh, the widow of the team’s leader, Eric Marsh, serve as a consultants on the film.
After making his feature debut with TRON: Legacy, Joseph Kosinski went on to direct the science fiction tale Oblivion. When plans for a third TRON film were cancelled at Walt Disney Pictures, Kosinski was said to be in talks for Sony Pictures‘ Gran Turismo video game adaptation. The current status of that project is unknown

Kosinski has had some crappy luck getting projects off the ground recently. Hopefully this one goes his way. It'll certainly be the most gloriously shot firefighting film.

Black Label Media, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Conde Nast Entertainment and producer Mike Menchel have tapped Joseph Kosinski to direct the Ken Nolan-scripted “No Exit.”

The pic tells the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of firefighters that faced one of the deadliest wildfires in history in order to save an Arizona town, resulting in the tragic death of 19 crew members.

Nolan developed the story on spec with the producers.

Di Bonaventura, Erik Howsam, Jeremy Steckler, Dawn Ostroff, Mike Menchel, Black Label Media’s Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill are producing the film. Black Label is financing.

Kosinski broke out with “Tron: Legacy” and followed that up with Tom Cruise’s “Oblivion.”

As for di Bonaventura, the film fits in his wheelhouse of action-packed films following projects like the “Transformers” franchise, “G.I. Joe” and the upcoming “Deepwater Horizon” starring Mark Wahlberg.

Black Label Media has been on a roll following the success of “Sicario” both critically and at the box office. The company’s 2016 slate looks to be just as strong with Jean-Marc Vallee’s upcoming “Demolition” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the J.D. Salinger pic “Rebel in the Rye” starring Nicholas Hoult and Kevin Spacey.

Steckler and Ostroff recently wrapped “Army of One,” directed by Larry Charles for Endgame and Dimension. Mike Menchel past credits include “One Chance” and “Ain’t Them Body Saints.”

Kosinski and Nolan are repped by CAA. Nolan is also managed by Kaplan/Perrone Ent.

This guy reminds me very much of Zack Snyder. Gorgeous visuals but lacking in telling an engaging story. Tron and Oblivion were beautiful borefests.

Pretty much. Even then, there's something a too sterile about his imagery for me.

Interesting, the scale of this could be pretty spectacular.

Seems like a different type of genre for Kosinski for once, which seems good for him. He's a talented director, I just think he needs a better script.

Wow, odd choice for Kosinski's next film! "Tron: Legacy" is one of my favorite guilty pleasures and "Oblivion"...well, yeah.

Still, very excited to see what comes of this.

Jennnifer Connelly Set In Granite Mountain Hotshot Pic ‘No Exit’
EXCLUSIVE: Jennifer Connelly is joining Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges and Taylor Kitsch in No Exit, the feature film based on the 20-member Granite Mountain Hotshots who fought the deadliest wildfire ever in Arizona’s history and were trapped on a mountainside in a circle of fire. The story of these true American heroes — 19 of which who died while trying to protect the lives of others — was written by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer and will be directed by Joe Kosinski (Oblivion).
It’s known that in drafting the story, the filmmakers spoke to the lone surviving member of the 20-man crew, Brendan McDonough.

The movie is based on true events that were chronicled in a GQ article. Black Label Media (Molly Smith & Trent Luckinbill) and Di Bonaventura Pictures are producing for Lionsgate.

Connelly is set to play the role of Amanda Marsh, the wife and “horse-whispering farrier” of the supervisor of the Tier One team of Hotshots.

The logline of the film? “Always a Tier Two team cleaning up after the elite Tier One ‘Hotshots’ who follow the wildfires during the season, the Prescott Wildland Firefighters – under the tireless training and perfectionism of their Supervisor Eric Marsh – become the first Municipal firemen to become Tier One themselves. A tight family of twenty, they’re the lead when lightning ignites the dry tinder on the hills beyond Yarnell. When a storm moves in and the wind shifts, the fire reverses course and picks up incredible speed. By luck, one of the young Hotshots, Brendan makes it out… but Eric and the other nineteen members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots tragically perish.”

I really like Oblivion. It has problems (especially the script), but it's one of the most gorgeously shot films I've ever seen. Every frame is quality. The score is also one of my favorites, just gorgeous. Interesting to see how Kosinski handles this.

Oblivion had a bland story, but the visuals and music were off the charts good. Same with Tron (which I love).

Tron Legacy is very under rated for me and I liked Oblivion as well, so looking forward to this.

Lionsgate has staked out 2017 release dates for a trio of films: family drama Wonder (April 7), comedy How to Be a Latin Lover (April 28) and firefighter drama Granite Mountain (September 22).

Granite Mountain tells the story of one worst firefighting disasters in U.S. history: the battle against the 2013 Yarnell Hill wildfire in Arizona that claimed the lives of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. Joseph Kosinski is directing the ensemble pic, which stars Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jeff Bridges, Taylor Kitsch, James Badge Dale and Ben Hardy. Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer wrote the script. Granite Mountain is set to open against the Warner Bros toon Ninjago
