I am starting this thread to try to bring some organization into the fold. In the years ahead there are going to be marches, protests, and petitions to safeguard our country as well as aim to maintain and progress civil rights.

This is the place to post information about important marches, protests, and petitions so that everyone can hopefully have up to date information on how and when to get involved.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
― Edmund Burke.

The next big march is the WOMEN'S SOLIDARITY MARCH on January 21st.

WOMEN'S SOLIDARITY MARCH

MISSION & VISION

The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us - immigrants of all statuses, Muslims and those of diverse religious faiths, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault - and our communities are hurting and scared. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear.

In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.

We support the advocacy and resistance movements that reflect our multiple and intersecting identities. We call on all defenders of human rights to join us. This march is the first step towards unifying our communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society. We work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all.

HEAR OUR VOICE.

The main march is in Washington DC and the website can be found here which includes the above mission statement and more. However, other states are taking part (as well as abroad). This is not a complete list (only those I found via eventbrite), most likely:

Arizona
Arkansas
California (Sacramento)
California (Los Angeles)
Connecticut (bus to DC)
Delaware
South Florida
Central Florida
Florida (Tampa)
Hawaii
Illinois
Iowa
Kansas
Maine
Massachusetts (January 14th "kick off")
Massachusetts (Boston, January 21)
Mississippi
Nevada
New Jersey
New York
Ohio (Bus to DC and breakfast)
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
Tennessee
Texas

Abroad (ones that I could find):

If you have any further information, feel free to post it and I'll include it in the details above.

A message from Barack Obama's team
Friend --

Well -- it's here.

The new Congress held session for the first time today, and its leaders have pledged that their first priority is going to be repealing Obamacare. The press is reporting that they are going to start as early as this week.

We are not going to let that happen without a fight.

If they are successful, nearly 30 million people could lose their insurance, and rates would increase for millions more. That's not progress. That's not O.K. This law is too important to too many people -- we can't let it be taken away.

We're collecting signatures of people who are willing to do what it takes to stop Congress from repealing Obamacare.

DEFEND OBAMACARE RIGHT NOW. SIGN THE PETITION AND WE'LL BE IN TOUCH ABOUT WHAT COMES NEXT.

The Affordable Care Act is the result of a hundred years of struggle to ensure that everyone in America has access to quality, affordable health care, and we will not let it go lying down.

President Obama signed health care reform into law for a good reason: Too many of our neighbors, friends, and family members were going without health insurance -- rolling the dice that they'd stay healthy -- just because they couldn't afford it, or because insurance companies were denying them coverage based on some pretext or pre-existing condition. We cannot go back to those times.

Millions of people like you have been a part of this fight -- and we need you again. Don't stay on the sidelines for this.

Thanks,

Jack

Dear Members of Congress, #StandUpForUS #Obstruct

We demand that you vigorously oppose Donald J. Trump to the extent that he pursues racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, anti-worker, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitic, anti-environmental policies.

We demand that you block nominees who threaten the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, people of color, immigrants, and the poor.

We need and expect you to protect our civil liberties, and to use your congressional powers to obstruct anything that violates our core values as diverse Americans.

The majority of Americans, regardless of who they voted for, did not vote for racism, for sexism, or for xenophobia. And yet since Donald J. Trump won, hate crimes are rising; women have been attacked in his name; people of color, attacked in his name.

Members of Congress are our last line of defense.

We want them to know that we are with them, and we expect them to have our backs. We won’t remain silent. We’ll work harder to mobilize our votes, and our communities.

This petition accompanies a Humanity for Progress PSA by director Liz Garbus that features: Chris Burbank, Steve Buscemi, Lea DeLaria, Sally Field, Tavi Gevinson, Yasmeen Hassan, Rabbi David Ingber, Zoe Kazan, Keegan-Michael Key, Naeem Khan, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, Imam Khalid Latif, Reverend Dr. Jacqui Lewis, Janet Mock, Rosie Perez, Ai-jen Poo, Bruce Ratner, Bishop Gene Robinson, Toure, and Jeffrey Wright.

Interesting to compare this to the Tea Party. The left largely ignored the Tea Party and they had an impact. I imagine the same will happen here and take Republicans by surprise.

Think so/hope so. Got three events this week or more - might not post as often so I can focus a lot more on it and getting involved now that the "inner circles" are forming so to speak (hopefully). Really hoping to get more local direction with everything going on this week so that I can do a heck of a lot more than I'm doing now.

I recommend people sign up with OFA, Obama's activist group. They've held group calls and seminars recently. All for how to safeguard Obamacare thus far.

The Resistance needs everyone they can get giving 110%.

Thanks and added it to the above.

Subject: Obama: Take action to protect immigrant families

Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to build a "big, beautiful wall," and has talked openly about creating a "deportation force" that would have the ability to round up and deport millions of immigrants. Trump might just be the most anti-immigrant president our nation has seen in recent history.

President Obama has just six days left in office -- just six days to take decisive action that could protect immigrants from Trump and his administration. So, today, on the Immigrant Justice National Day of Action, we're raising our voices with progressive members of Congress to call on President Obama to take immediate action.

Protecting immigrants and their families has never been more urgent. Add your name alongside members of Congress in a letter calling on President Obama to take action in his final week in office.

There's nothing Obama can do in his final days as President that would completely fix our broken immigration system, or dismantle the state-sanctioned deportation machine. But there are very specific actions he can take to protect us and show that families like mine matter. Here's what President Obama can do during his final days in office:

> Pardon permanent residents who are threatened with deportation as a result of minor criminal convictions

> Put a definitive end to the practice of detaining immigrant families and close the detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania

> Use constitutional power to grant clemency to all individuals with federal non-violent, low-level drug offenses, and to pardon undocumented immigrants who are currently unable to receive an adjustment to their status

Add your name to stand with us in calling on President Obama to take action on immigration in his final days in office.

Our Revolution is committed to the fight to protect immigrants and their families. Thanks for taking action today.

Text from the site:
Our democracy is at risk. Growing public cynicism and an alarming disdain for truthfulness is eroding our most dearly held democratic ideals. As writers we have tremendous power to bypass empty political discourse and focus public attention on the ideals of a free, just, and compassionate society.

Throughout the US and in other countries, writers are organizing their own Writers Resist events on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, January 15, 2017.

Invited speakers will read from a curated selection of diverse writers’ voices that speak to the ideals of Democracy and free expression. The public is encouraged to attend. Find an event.

Event locations around the country

Form: Various
Days: Sunday and Monday
Event: MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. BIRTHDAY

There are a lot of marches, gatherings, and festivals planned. In many cases more than one event for any particular area. It's best to google locally for what is going on near you.

Looks like there could be as many people marching today as there were at the inauguration. Not just here but around the world.

That's great and all but here's something they can learn from the Tea Party. Don't just march and protest. Run for office. The only way to affect real change is to change the system from the inside.

Looks like Trump is bringing the world together with all these marches in all these countries

Yeah, but a good number of these folks got their butts handed to them, mostly because they were all talk and no substance.

For every one Rand Paul, for example, who won, you've got several Sharron Angles of Christine O'Donnell's who crashed and burned after making waves in the headlines. As much as folks want to run and upset the established order, and good on them for being bold enough to challenge an incumbent, the general public most of the times sticks with the familiar.

Obviously Trump's win and some of the Tea Party wins in Congress counter that, but for the left, especially if there's still these divisions between the old guard and the folks inspired by Sanders, it could lead to another clash of ideals come 2018 midterm time.

Okay, this protest does a LOT to ease my fears.

Yeah but they are all paid protestors and illegals!

Makes me laugh this protest was worldwide, even in Antartica

I am so proud of my fellow Americans and global neighbors protesting Cheeto Hitler.

They are wanting that comparison rather than it being compared to the "Occupy Wall Street" groups which went nowhere because there was no grass root organizing of it. I think this will be different.

I think the "old" guard has learned a valuable lesson, and as Pelosi had to stand there and watch Trump sign in the beginnings of throwing out ACA.....that could not have been easy, his next step is the Dream Act....I think now, though far too late for this Presidency, they have learned a lesson, and that lesson will be retaught with every piece of legislation and Executive Orders that come out over the next 100 days.
