Superman Returns The Donner Cut ... will that help us???

Hi SR Fans :supes: ,

I have seen the movie as most of us have. I was wondering when the Donner cut of SII will come out? I also was wondering if it will answer a lot of our questions about how this film continues after the first two Superman movies made many years ago. Many people have issues about Superman leaving and telling the President that he would not ... sleeping with Lois ... those bizzare powers he had ... the unused Jor - El footage ... was the FOS destroyed after Zod, Non and Ursa were arrested ... did he really give up his powers ... was he suppose to reveal his identity to Lois.

I guess my main question or concern is whether the release of the donner cut will help or hurt this movie. Will it make more sense, bridge the gap or just confuse us more ... what are your thoughts?

Probably hurt it more...I am trying to stay spoiler free from the Donner footage but I don't think that Singer would base SR history on a release that the public has never seen.

I think Singer sort of bailed on the SMII references.
Originally I understood he was going to Krypton to make sure no one else was floeating about ala Zod and co.
When they had there night of LOVE wasn't Supes without powers??
In the words of Edward Nigma"Too many Questions!!!"

Donner's SRII won't fit into SR. If I remember correctly, Superman blows up the fortress and there is no amnesia kiss at the end.

They're using a prop from SR and Donner is shooting extra stuff???!

iF: How much do you know about Richard Donner’s cut of SUPERMAN II that is currently being re-assembled?

SINGER: Oh yeah. Not only am I aware of it, but I ran into Dick on the lot recently and he took me into the editing room with [uncredited SUPERMAN 1 and II screenwriter] Tom Mankiewicz and showed me the first part of it and it was awesome?

iF: So what exactly are they doing? How intensive is this? I thought Donner wasn’t involved and now he is?

SINGER: He came in to take a look at it. They had an editor to work on it, and he and Tom came in and were going through it. A lot of it is elements of sequences that were shot and put together. I feel bad we’re talking about it, because I’m sure they want to talk about it, but it was such an impressive and fun thing to watch. They took two separate screen tests and cut them together and it’s this great scene where Lois Lane puts Clark to the test, because she believes he’s Superman and there’s a gun involved. That’s all I’ll say. At first you’re watching it and it’s very odd to watch these two separate things. It keeps looking differently to your eye. The lighting of the scene and construction of the scene is so good, that by the time the scene pays off you’re captivated by it. I watched it in the cutting room. It was a thrill for me. I had just laid the opening credit music for my movie and then suddenly I was in the cutting room in a building across the street watching this with Dick and Tom and it was a thrill?

iF: Are they shooting any additional stuff to link it to SUPERMAN RETURNS?

SINGER: That I don’t know. I just watched the first 20 minutes or so. They did want to want to borrow a prop at one point, but I don’t know if that was used.

iF: If they borrowed a prop, then they must have been shooting stuff?

SINGER: They did -- they shot certain things. They shot and reconstructed certain things. It isn’t for a massive release I don’t believe or anything, but they did shoot additional elements. They really went back to Richard Donner’s original intention of the film before he left it.

I LOVE Superman's telling the president he'd never leave at the end of 2, then in the beginning of 3 (Returns) he's gone... I think Singer turned that into a great moment of foreshadowing, and who knows, maybe if Donner had done his own Superman 3 he may have used the same set-up.

Just a thought........
Many scenes in SR were a CG Routh(assisting the shuttle lift off)and they were quite convincing, the technology is very impressive, so why wouldn't it be possible to, using CGI, create the planned but unfilmed sections of S:TM / SII, deliver clear and pristine images to match screen test dialogues, and mix them in with the existing footage, to give us the two films as Donner originally had planned them to be.

Well we've heard that they're going back to use a lot of the screen test footage and jazz it up.. we'll see what's in store I guess come this Christmas (I'm patient enough to wait, even if I am pretty psyched)

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut is not in Continuity with Superman Returns.....

it won't help, it will just confuse even more.

Donner's Superman II is quite different than Lester's, but Singer doesnt like the movie though it seems to be in continuity.

Check out my sig to learn more about The Richard Donner Cut of Superman II

Does anyone think when Singer said it was loosely based on SM2, he meant certain ideas and that its not literally based after 2 or before 2 or whatever. There's too many things that appear in SM: The Movie, SM2 and Superman Returns, to call it a sequel. Well thats what I think anyway.

What's interesting to me is that Donner's vision was that his tale would be told in two parts. Technically then there really was not a SII as a stand alone cinematic entity, but a true sequel or continuation of the narrative across films, ala the Lord of the Rings, and to me in order for it to truly be a Donner cut it would need to include both films as he first envisioned it.

Just an out of context quote from Singer.. pretty corny but funny..

"Oh yeah. Not only am I aware of it, but I ran into Dick on the lot recently and he took me.."
