I know a lot of people who have told me "I wish I'd listened to the scores." Some people will be able to like the game, but it's not "Phantasy Star Online" for a new generation as was promised.
In today's declining global economy, I can't afford to ignore reviews when it could mean I end up with a crappy game that I don't like. If I'm really that desperate to find out if I like a game and the reviews are mixed, I borrow it from a friend or rent it, and then make my decision accordingly. The last time I said "screw the critics, I want to like this game so I'm buying it anyway" was with Spider-Man 3, and that was a horrible mistake. I ended up trading it in a month later, and the experience was so sobering that it actually got me to cancel my pre-order for Lair, which at the time was recieving very negative previews. I learned a valuable lesson that day, which was not to pre-order anything that has a strong chance to be a misfire.
