Tom Welling as Superman

How did I do that????
My post was on two subjects..Tom Welling being cast as Superman in the new movie because of the fans and the show becoming a Superman show.

You did it because in the first sentence that I bolded you state that WB would've put him in Returns it it cared about his fans, but then go on to say in the next sentence that WB will milk Smallville for all it's worth since it's cash cow.

Well, if they're intent on "milking a show for all it's worth" they arent going to kill it by pulling out it's lead actor for a feature film. Smallville being a cash cow, as you so aptly stated, was the very reason why Welling never had a shot at being cast in Returns. You don't kill a golden goose in the hopes that another one will spring up in it's place. You go out and try to find a 2nd Golden goose.

I think there is too much wishful thinking here: yeah sure the whole fake Jimmy thing and Doomsday being buried alive is one thing and it aligns to some sort of comic continuity but we have to be pratical when it comes to business.

They can't make a Superman show with the kind of budget Smallville has these days: CW doesn't have the money and it would have to go to another network and so far the only one which I think could pick up something like this, is NBC.

Can other network advertise this like a new show?

Then Tom's thinking: he's going to play a character for 15 years (something like that)? I Think the only reason why Tom signed for another two years it's because of the world's economical crisis and with no Tom, no Smallville. Tom must have felt the weight of having of people working for the show and suddenly, it could mean no more work.

Then what about the others? Michael, Erica, Annette, Michael Mckean?

They can all say: sure, just give the people money but in Tom's case, it would have to be some really large amount of money. I'm betting the new contract Tom has signed, must be paying him a ridiculous amount of money.

As much as I want Tom in a Superman show, I want the rest of the Smallville's cast as well: it would be unfair if TPTB would recast some roles...

But again it sounds too much wishful thinking.

Not that i'm putting any stock into the rumors posted by Steve, but what makes you think a Superman show would cost more than Smallville? Give Clark glasses and a Suit to fly around in, and it's pretty much superman.

They've shown that flight is perfectly within their budget. It's just the effects they've used in previous flight scenes with clark have gone all out. they weren't just the motion blurr we've come to expect with kara or manhunter or cosmic boy. Super jumps transitioned the same way. It used to be waves of energy coming off of him and a really impressive feat. now he just kinda jumps and a motion blur follows him to his destination.

Also, I think people are misinterpreting the "transition to a superman show" quote. I'm pretty sure that was meant to say that Smallville would just continue on into the life of Superman. It's not going to go another 5 years because of it...

you are saying exactly what I said

I'm surprised any one had hopes left for that franchise.

Routh probably did. I feel bad since it wasn't much of his fault the movie was bad. He hardly had any lines.

No, it wasn't his fault. Yet, if he'd been a more experienced actor he might have hesitated to sign on in the first place. I don't think a more seasoned actor would have wanted to ape another's performance rather than create his own take on the character.

You know whats funny Brandon Routh tried out for Smallville but the role went to Tom Welling and Tom Welling tried out for Superman Returns but the role went to Brandon Routh.

But yeah i agree Routh is a good actor its not his fault SR sucked it was Bryan Singer and the script. Making Superman a stalker with a kid and having to deal with a *****y Lois Lane and being ''christ'' like.

I don't think Welling tried out for Superman Returns.

I don't think Welling tried out for Superman Returns.

I don't think it was really an option. They woulda had to cancel the fourth season, I think, and Warner's probably wasn't willing to see the show end yet.

He'll, they don't seem to want to let it ever end.

From what I understand he didn't try out for Singer & his Superman Returns film, however he me Brett Ratner at his home about becoming Superman in his film before he left the project & was supposedly one of Ratner's top choices for the role, however the fact that he was still doing Smallville & if he went to do the film the show would near enough just have to end abruptly prevented him from taking it any further

I also heard about Al Gough and Miles Millar getting possessive of Welling and tried to interrupt any progress of him getting a Superman role because that would mean the end of Smallville. This was all rumors and nothing concrete of course.

That is funny.
and Tom Welling tried out for Superman Returns but the role went to Brandon Routh.
That didn't happen. The first part was funny though.

I thought Welling did try out for SR oh well sorry people my bad.

You think Routh would of been a good/better Clark Kent then Welling?

I can agree with this. 10 does sound like a perfect ending stone. After all, if 100 episodes guarantee syndication, what does 200 guarantee? Super syndication?

I think Welling has him beat. But they're playing different Clark Kent's.
Yeah, Welling didn't try out for Returns, as others have mentioned, he was in talks to do it before Singer came on board.

Yea i heard about welling meeting with ratner when he was on board before singer took reigns of superman film. Also i remember hearing about the whole al/miles deal too on welling. Also if we want to get into who else tested for clark in smallville, jensen ackles aka jason i read also tried out for clark role.

Welling never tried out for SR under Singer. He met with Ratner when he was in charge like B said. There were also rumors that he talked to McG about the part, but I've never seen confirmation of that one way or the other.

Yeah but i want Clark as Superman the whole season of season 10.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics Win Superman Case

Source:Variety
July 8, 2009

Variety reports that Warner Bros. and DC Comics have won a favorable ruling in the suit filed by the heirs of "Superman" co-creator Jerome Siegel. Here are some excerpts from the ruling:

In a decision announced Wednesday, U.S. Judge District Court Judge Stephen G. Larson found that the license fees the studio paid to corporate sibling DC Comics didn't represent "sweetheart" deals as they weren't below fair market value. That means the heirs will be able seek profits only from DC Comics -- which earned $13.6 million from Warner Bros. for the 2006 release of "Superman Returns" -- rather than from Warner Bros. as well.

The judge, who conducted a 10-day bench trial, also noted that Warner Bros. chairman Alan Horn had testified that he hopes to make another "Superman" movie but added that the property wasn't under development at the studio, that no script had been written and that the earliest another "Superman" pic could be released would be in 2012.

Toberoff also asserted in a written statement that the Siegel heirs and the heirs of co-creator Joe Shuster will own the entire Superman copyright in 2013.

"The Court pointedly ruled that if Warner Bros. does not start production on another Superman film by 2011, the Siegels will be able to sue to recover their damages," Toberoff added
.

And.here.we.go.

this superman movie will definitely not be related to Smallville...
