University of Minnesota – Duluth: “It’s hard to see racism, when you’re white.”Kevin Danielsen June 21, 2012 3:41 pm
In a simple slogan saying, “It’s hard to see racism, when you’re white,” the ‘Un-Fair Campaign’, sponsored by the University of Minnesota, has effectively unleashed what they truly think about racism in America. In an effort to stop ‘white privilege’ in its tracks, they attack the issue of how other races tread under the foot of white society. Their aim? Well, we aren’t exactly sure. The Un-Fair Campaign website goes on to talk about how they would define various terms:
What is prejudice? The prejudging of a person or situation without sufficient knowledge or facts. Personal and individual beliefs about race that are influenced by the dominant group’s values, practices and beliefs. Anyone can be prejudiced.

What is racism? Racism is more than individual prejudice based on race. Racism is the power of a dominant group, through its systems and institutions, to enforce the dominant culture’s history, values, practices and beliefs. It advantages those in the dominant group and disadvantages those who are not. It results in disparities.
What is white privilege? A set of advantages that are given to people who are part of the majority and dominant group. These opportunities and privileges are often invisible.

Do they have any examples of ‘white privilege’? In fact they do!
  • I can walk around a department store without being followed;
  • I can come to meeting late and not have my lateness attributed to my race;
  • I am able to drive a car in any neighborhood without being perceived as being in the wrong place or looking for trouble;
  • I can turn on the television or look to the front page and see people of my ethnic and racial background represented;
  • I can take a job without having co-workers suspect that I got it because of my racial background;
  • I can send my 16-year old out with his new driver’s license and not have to give him a lesson how to respond if police stop him.
Now, we have a university that is sponsoring an effort to demonize white people, in such a way that all people that have white skin should feel guilty about being ‘privileged’. So, what is their solution? Climb ‘the ladder’ (see below and read from bottom to top):

Funny and sad. Funny and sad.

"I am able to drive a car in any neighborhood without being perceived as being in the wrong place or looking for trouble."

That's flat out untrue. There are many neighborhoods where, if you're white, you might as well just have a bulleyes on your chest.

1) The people behind this are racist themselves.

2) Whites can experience racism too.

3) As CConn pointed out, some of their points are just not true and naive. There are neighborhoods you'd better not show your face if it's white.

"If you see racism, break the silence"

I see racism....like the picture demonizing a white man for being white.

Yeah, truly wise people realize that racism transcends all colors and cultures.

I mean, even in Asian, the Japanese are viewed as superior to the Koreans, who are viewed as superior to the Chinese, etc.

Black people here have to be afraid they'll be judged for their race, and white people here have to be afraid they'll be misconstrued for racist.

Those are in certain cities and towns. The midwest and the south are still segregated, economically and geographically. Also, even if it is more likely to die by lightning than terrorism in the US, every Muslim in America is under surveillance, so are any Americans that are politically active.

Mmm, yes. I'm sure the government has a nanny cam in every muslim's home.

Actually, it goes Japanese > Peripheral Chinese (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore) > Korean > Mainland Chinese > Tiger People (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand) > and then Vietnamese and Filipino somewhere.

Like with all things, we're very detail oriented. :(

Umm, shouldn't everyone be taught how to do that? This list is racist as ****

Hah. Thanks for the clarification. :D

Haha, I was just waiting for the knee jerk reactions to begin.

Many other Asian nationalities, but white people sure seem to love them some Filipino spouses.

Also, what does it infer a normal black teenager would say to a cop if they were pulled over?

Are we supposed to assume they're immediately going to become indignant or defensive?

What's a nanny cam? I'm talking about telephone, GPS tracking (via cell phone), internet, cellphone monitoring, and financial surveillance. They also have moles in their community centers. I have friends who work in the security industry. Racial profiling is a must for Muslims. Muslims are the new Japanese....minus the internment camps. The sad thing is, they are not really a race.

Isn't it funny at the first time the temperature hit's over 50 degrees, white people gotta be wearing shorts? :huh:

White people will wear flipflops in 20 degree whether. :o

I'm sorry, I was being dismissive. Further explaination by way of hearsay really won't make me any less dismissive. :o

No, the point isn't about what white and black people do, it's about how white and black people are perceived differently by the police. In a lot of places in America white folks don't have to be as careful with what they say as people of other racial groups because it is less likely that a police officer will assume guilt on their part.

I mean, yes, I agree that white people can experience racism and it's not okay to dismiss that, but at the same time being white does put a person at a huge advantage in society.

I can't account for the flip flops... but it was -7 last winter and two of my co-workers and I were on a business trip... both of them wearing shorts with thick jackets in their off time. I was so confused.

Not if you're married to an Hispanic woman with a black step-daughter living in Ohio it's not.
