New Sword Art Online game due out in 2016.

SAOHR-Ann-PS4-PSV_001.jpg

Bandai Namco announced Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita at the Dengeki Bunko Fall Festival in Akihabara. The game, which was first teased at the Tokyo Game Show in September, will launch in Japan in 2016.

The game is set in a new virtual reality MMORPG called “Sword Art: Origin.” The servers of the death game “Sword Art Online” are the base of this new game, and its setup served as research and development. In this virtual reality MMORPG that resembles past events, Kirito receives a single message. But what that means is still a mystery. More information is due out in volume 600 of Dengeki PlayStation magazine, which hits newsstands on Thursday, October 8.

Watch the debut trailer below. Visit the official website here.

Additionally, Bandai Namco announced a “PlayStation 4 Sword Art Online: Game Director’s Edition Aincrad Model” available in Jet Black and Glacier White color variations from the Sony Store. It will launch alongside Sword Art Online: Game Director’s Edition (which includes the PlayStation 4 version of Sword Art Online: Lost Song and a download code for Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment) in Japan on November 19 for 42,980 yen. Pre-orders begin October 5 at 11:00 a.m. Japan time.

Thanks, Dengeki Online.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization first details
Published 9 hours ago. 42 comments.

Producer and designer discuss the newly announced game.

SAOHR_10-06-15.jpg

Dengeki PlayStation this week has first details on the newly announced Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization.
The magazine features an interveiw with Bandai Namco producer Yosuke Futami and Aquria producer Satoshi Hirayae. Here are some excerpts:
Regarding the development concept…
Futami: “We wanted to make a game where Kirito starts from Level 1 at the beginning. That’s the kind of concept it is.”
Hirayae: “We want people to play in the world of the early days of Sword Art Online and then gradually start to feel like something is off as they progress.”

Futami: “The setting looks like Aincrad, but as a matter of fact, it’s a different world. It’s a world where everything is connected buy adjoining land, not a world divided into different layers.”

How are the action elements compared to Lost Song?
Hirayae: “You’ll fight and raid using a skill palette, and there are a number of management elements where you can direct your party members and such. One of the main features of the system is how these action and management elements coexist. Unlike Hollow Fragment, this time, you can take along up to three people. For example, one person could raise the toss, the second person could use a sword skill, the third person could restrain the enemy, and finally Kirito can deliver the finishing blow.

Regarding the heroine…
Futami: “She’s about 14 years old. The heroine is an AI character, and that AI will develop as she adventures with Kirito and friends.”
Other details listed in the magazine include:

 • There is no auto-attack.
 • You can jump.
 • The PS Vita version will likely have a touch-enabled skill panel.
 • There are plans for online multiplayer.
Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization first screenshots, outline

SAOHR-First-Screens_10-08-15.jpg

Bandai Namco has updated the official Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization website with first screenshots and an outline of the 2016-due PlayStation 4 and PS Vita game.
Get the information below.
About
A reconstructed virtual world—the “people” did not demand this world.

Logged in. This is a somewhat familiar world. An origin world. This “world” is not the world we live in.
The year 2024—.

“Sword Art Online” (commonly called “SAO”), which is set on the floating castle “Aincrad,” turned into a death game where getting a game over means you die in real life. When the player known as Kirito cleared the game, the virtual reality world collapsed—.

This incident, known as the “SAO Incident,” caused a great ripple in society.

Some time passed—.
From the life-threatening virtual reality hardware “NerveGear” came the the guaranteed-safe “AmuSphere” virtual reality hardware, which ushered in the golden age of virtual reality.
Under the pretense of research and development for new possibilities in virtual reality, a new game was built on the old Sword Art Online server.

The name of this new game is “Sword Art Origin” (commonly called “SA: O”), and in this new virtual reality MMORPG reminiscent of past incidents, Kirito receives a message.
“I came back to Aincrad.”

A new adventure for Kirito and friends begins.
Characters

 • Kirito – A virtual reality MMO player, from Sword Art Online to ALfheim Online. He is known as the “Black Swordsman.” Although thin, he is a top class fighter in virtual reality MMOs. He is an SAO returnee.

 • Asuna – During the SAO era, she was sub-leader of the “Knights of the Blood,” one of the game’s best guilds. After meeting Kirito, they decided to live together. Thanks to her brilliant sword skills, she earned the nickname “The Flash.” She is kind to others, but powerful at her core.

 • ??? – A mysterious girl. With no expression, she gazes at Kirito from a distance, and leaves them a message.

Sword Art Online: Lost Song producer discusses western sales, teases Hollow Realization
Published 34 mins ago. 2 comments.

150,000 sales in the west, according to producer Yosuke Futami.

SAO-LS-West-Sales_01-15-16.jpg

Sword Art Online: Lost Song sold 100,000 copies in North America and 50,000 copies in Europe for a total of 150,000 copies in the west, according to producer Yosuke Futami.

“If you look at Twitter and Facebook, I think [Sword Art Online: Lost Song was received in the west] mostly favorably,” Futami told Dengeki Online. “But Re: Hollow Fragment seems to be more popular, probably because there are a lot of users overseas that like RPGs.

“However, Lost Song did 100,000 units in North America, and even in Europe it sold about 50,000 units, so I have no objections. The download version was pretty popular and sold well overseas. If we look at just the download version on its own, we put out about 30,000 units in North America

Compared to Japan, Sword Art Online: Lost Song‘s retail version last charted at 177,000 sales on PS Vita, 65,000 sales on PlayStation 3 , and 18,000 sales on PlayStation 4 (Sword Art Online: Game Director’s Edition).
Futami also spoke a bit about the upcoming Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization.

“Something particular to Hollow Realization is the ‘support cry system,’ though that’s a temporary name,” Futami said and laughed. “This is a system where, not only does the player praise other characters, but other characters praise the player. For example, when you attack an enemy with a cooperative attack, Asuna, Lisbeth, and Silica will attack, and they’ll trust Kirito (the player) to deliver the finishing blow. But once you deliver that attack, everyone will praise you like, ‘You’re amazing!'”

Hollow Realization will also have a character from the original novel never before seen in the Sword Art Online video games.

“We’re planning a character from the original novel who will appear for the first time. However, it’s not a character attached to the letters ‘a’ or ‘yu,’ so please understand.”

Late last year, when Futami debuted first gameplay of Hollow Realization during a Niconico live stream, he said the game was only 10 percent completed development. He clarified with Dengeki that he’s referring to the development process, and that graphics aren’t going to evolve dramatically. Their focus is on creating a great atmosphere, not amazing graphics. When he said 10 percent complete, he meant that “the appearance of the game and the system that gives it its atmosphere are developed.”

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in North America, Europe, and Japan in 2016.

New footage from Dengeki Online.

SAO-HR-Vid_04-07-16.jpg

Dengeki Online has gone up with a new pair of Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization gameplay videos showcasing the game’s “Large Sword” weapon and “Named Monsters.”

While the basic controls for the large sword aren’t much different from the one-handed sword, players can more easily connect basic attacks with sword skills. Instead of Square (basic attack) to Triangle (Sword Skill), you can hit Square (basic attack) and then Square again (which instead of a basic attack, becomes a Sword Skill). Large sword Sword Skills include “Fight Blade,” “Lightning,” “Blast,” and “Cyclone.” You can freely utilize these skills by using the Triangle button and left analog stick.

As for Named Monsters, these are powerful monsters different from normal monsters encountered on the field and boss monsters encountered in specific areas. Featured in the video is the “Great Horn Buffalo,” which a Level 12 Kirito, Level 11 Asuna, Level 10 Leafa, and Level 10 Sinon take on.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita this fall in Japan, and in 2016 in North America and Europe.

Sword Art Online Producer On MMO Features, Dating Side Quests and VR . May 17, 2016 . 6:00pm

Siliconera recently had the opportunity to talk to Sword Art Online game series producer, Yosuke Futami on keeping the best parts of prior titles Hollow Fragment and Lost Song in Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization.

8 comments Read >

Siliconera recently had the opportunity to talk to Sword Art Online game series producer, Yosuke Futami on keeping the best parts of prior titles Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment and Sword Art Online: Lost Song, his plans for side content and his thoughts on a possible VR title in the Sword Art Online series.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization seems to blend the two previous games together, making a game that looks like a MMO but plays like an RPG. Why did you decide to go down this path?

So Hollow Fragment had elements of MMORPG and that was something people would really be able to enjoy the action of being right there in an MMORPG. And then for Lost Song, which as you said is action oriented and that’s going to really visualise how Kirito and the other characters, how they move, how they use their skills like in the animation. So this time, we’re looking for the same thing, we’re looking for a lot of action but those actions are based on what you see in an MMORPG. So with that in mind, I would like to bring those good elements from those two previous titles and merge them into this title.

Hollow Realization is the first Sword Art Online game to not be based on any prior story. Hollow Fragment is based off the Aincrad arc and Lost Song is based on the Fairy Dance arc. Was there anything you were able to do with Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization that couldn’t before?

One of the key concepts of this game is we’d like to make it so all the characters like Kirito and other characters, along with the player themselves, are able to experience the game from the very beginning. In Lost Song or Hollow Fragment, both start at different levels [in their world] which gives you the image of starting the game in the middle. So this time, because Sword Art: Origin which is built from scratch, players can experience the story right from the beginning.

Hollow Fragment had a lot of side quests and side content like the dating systems whereas Lost Song was lacking in that area. Will Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization see the return of this sort of content?

Of course! I cannot say anything specific about the dating system just yet but I’m trying to enhance that in this title too. Basically the concept is going to the be the same but we’ll be enhancing strength of some elements of the dating system so I think there’s going to be plenty for people to enjoy aside from the main story.

I remember some of our readers were glad that Lost Song moved to more simplistic action RPG style, that they found the MMO stylings, the skill bars and gauges of Hollow Fragment to be intimidating. Now these are back in Hollow Realization, what would you say to those who preferred a simpler game?

I cannot go into too much detail yet but there is a shortcut command when using skills so for those people who feel there is too much information on screen so this is will make it so you can keep your favourite skills tied to a button on the controller so by using them, they can then concentrate more on the action. Then for some people, they can keep all their skills in the centre of the screen so they can immediately switch and customise their skills while in battle.

Virtual reality is something of the hot topic in gaming right now and Sword Art Online seems like a natural fit for the series. I know there’s some projects going on with Sword Art Online right now but would you like to to make a game in VR and what sort of ideas would you go for?

So like you mentioned VR is a popular topic right now and we are thinking that this is something we definitely have to do something with for Sword Art Online. However, this will be quite challenging and we’d like to take things step by step. it may take us a couple of years in order to realise it but VR technology is going to be implemented in the future and they’ll be VR exclusive titles too so we are researching into those games and looking into their positive parts and then we’ll decide how to implement those technologies in order to make a Sword Art Online VR game so we’ll happily look forward to making a Sword Art Online VR game in the future.

Have you ever tried a VR game where you can a swing a sword or something similar?

No I haven’t. I would like to though!

I’ve had to chance to try a VR game where I could swing a sword using a VR system but at that time it was not really synchronised so I could feel some awkwardness with it right now. I didn’t feel totally synchronised in the VR world yet however of course, year after year, I’m sure this awkwardness will be removed so I’m ready to wait for the technology to improve and so I can take that technology and bring it into a Sword Art Online game.

Then maybe it’ll be possible to realise a VR dating system! [laughs]

Bandai Namco has released new details and screenshots of Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, confirming that Agil and Klein, both former “Sword Art Online” players, will return and join Kirito for his new adventure.

In the “Town of Beginning” where the game begins, players can customize their avatar and prepare themselves for battle. Players can also meet and hire NPCs (with more than 300 available in the game), create special bonds, and offer them equipment. The closer they are to the player, the stronger they will become. Both Agil and Klein fall in this category of NPCs.

Bandai Namco also detailed some of the game’s online elements. Players will be able to enter raids and fight bosses with both NPCs and other players. The company promises a “wider world” in Hollow Realization, inhabited by monsters not yet seen in the series, including “Shadow Demons” and “Skeletons.”

At AX 2016, Aniplex of America held an election/popularity poll for Sword Art Online (SAO). Votes could only be submitted at the Aniplex of America Booth # 3201 at AX 2016.

Those who attended the convention could choose from 11 different characters. Each character came with their own slogan and a reason for why the voter should vote for them in the upcoming election. A picture of the candidates can be seen below.

The voting took place during all days of the convention from July 1-4. Every day there would be an update on who was currently in the lead and how many votes each candidate had.

Now that the final results have been tallied, here are the three runner ups in the election.

4th Place: Yuuki
In fourth place with 647 votes is the leader of the Sleeping Knights, the master swordsman, Yuuki (aka Zekken). The only person who could match Kirito in a duel in ALO was able to capture enough hearts with her tragic story to secure fourth place.
She was able to help Asuna mend relations with her mother and touched the lives of many who met her. It is fitting that she be in the Top 4 of this poll.

3rd Place: Kirito
The hero who saved 6,147 people trapped in Aincrad and the main protagonist ofSword Art Online landed in third place with 1332 votes. He saved thousands of people by defeating Kayaba Akihiko, vanquished the creepy fairy king Oberon, sliced through the bullets of Death Gun and is the holder of the legendary sword Excalibur.
Known as the Black Swordsman, he is able to accomplish feats in the virtual world that many people can only dream of doing. He slices through bullets and magic with relative ease. It’s not surprising to see this guy place in the top 3.
Now the first runner up and Vice President in Sword Art Online is…

2nd Place (Vice President): Asuna
That’s right, the Vice Commander of the Knights of the Blood Oath and female main protagonist of Sword Art Online was able to gather 1397 votes and become the Vice President in this election. She is known as Asuna the Flash for her incredible speed and skill with a rapier.
Asuna gained immediate popularity for being strong female lead and one who was not characterized as a damsel in distress. She ended up saving Kirito multiple times throughout the Aincrad arc and proved that Kirito was not as invincible as he seemed to be.
Throughout the entire election, Asuna had been trailing Kirito by a couple of votes but ended up gaining the lead in the end.
Due to her character, fighting ability, and leadership skills demonstrated during her time as Vice Commander of the Knights of the Blood Oath, Asuna is right where she belongs as Vice President.
Now that you have seen the top 3 runner ups, it is time to reveal the winner of the SAO Election at AX 2016. The votes were tallied, the fans have spoken, and now the overall most popular character and President of Sword Art Online is…

1st Place (President): Sinon
She’s cool, calm and collected and now she is the President of Sword Art Online. Sinon is the was able to garner an astounding 1431 votes to secure the Presidential nomination.
Throughout the entire election, Sinon stayed on top with a handy lead over all her competitors.
The wielder of the PGM Ultima Ratio Hecate II and female main protagonist of the Phantom Bullet arc, Sinon gained immense popularity due to her tragic backstory, character development, character design, and strength of character shown throughout the entire series. In a recent poll in Japan to determine who would grace abec’s art book cover, Sinon was able to place 3rd out of all the characters in Sword Art Online, just losing out to Yuuki (2nd) and Asuna (1st).
This time around Sinon bested those two and was able to come out with the nomination. Throughout the Phantom Bullet arc, Sinon kept fighting her fear, the trauma that had been gnawing at her since she was a young child.
Thanks to her determination, and with a little push from Kirito, Sinon was able to overcome her trauma, proving that with strength of will and determination, you can overcome any obstacle within your life.
Sinon proved that anything can happen so long as you don’t give up. No matter what holds you down, if you keep trying, you’ll be able to break the chains that bind you.
Thanks to her strength of character, great character development, and overall great personality, I am proud to call Sinon the winner and President of Sword Art Online, she certainly deserves to win.
How does Sinon feel about winning the election?

A response full of confidence from the new President, and I can’t blame her.

Get the information below.
■ Story

SAOHR_JP_07-22-16_001.jpg

2026. A new virtual reality MMORPG called “Sword Art: Origin” is suddenly announced. Kirito, who participated in the closed beta test, meets a mysterious girl there. An NPC girl without a name or settings.

She was an NPC with a strange quest that awarded only a single Cor.

The girl, given the name “Premiere,” will deepen her interactions with the Kirito and friends over the course of their adventure. “Humans” and “AI.” Beings with such different logic cannot coexist. When the girl’s true purpose is revealed, people will fight for “it.” Will the NPC girl’s meeting with the “Black Swordsman” destroy the world, or save it?
The curtain of a new death game rises…

■ Characters

Genesis (voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu)

“The Black Swordsman”

“The Mysterious NPC”

An NPC without a name or settings. Kirito and friends named her “Premiere.

” Until now, she has been shrouded in mystery, but now we will see her interact with Kirito and friends. It seems she has an unexpectedly sweet side, as well.

■ New System: “Skill Allied”

“Skill Allied” is a new system that combo connects the party’s Sword Skills. By using this system, you can trigger special party links that deal higher than normal damage.

—Skill Allied is activated. Blue arrows indicate the order of the link. Here it will go from Sinon to Strea.

New information and screenshots.

—From Strea, it goes to Asuna. Asuna connects with her Sword Skill. Finally, it jumps to Kirito.

—By skillfully connecting Sword Skills, Skill Allied continues and the damage you deal will continue to increase.

■ The Town of Beginnings

SAOHR_JP_07-22-16_007.jpg

In the Town of Beginnings, you can purchase items, connect with your friends, and interact with over 300 NPCs.

There are all sorts of things you can do—you can give the items you buy at shops to your friends and NPCs as presents, or just relax at the cafe. Use The Town of Beginnings to take a break from your adventure. Or to prepare your equipment. All 300 NPCs can also be recruited to join your party.

■ NPCs and Messaging
SAOHR_JP_07-22-16_008.jpg

You can enjoy a variety of interactions with the 300-plus NPCs in the game.

Additionally, you can receive messages from the NPCs you achieve a high level of friendship with.

You can further increase that bond by replying.
■ Raid Bosses

SAOHR_JP_07-22-16_009.jpg

During Raid Boss battles, four parties of 16 people participate.

Fight alongside other parties to take down the powerful boss. During Raid Bosses, Skill Allied can be used by only four members of your 16-person party, but you can increase the damage it deals by continuously attacking with the four parties that participate.

■ PS4 and PS Vita Cross-Save
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization supports cross-save between PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

You can upload save data to PlayStation Network and share it between both versions.
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on October 27 in Japan, and this fall in North America and Europe.
