In the new world of Sword Art: Origin, it is said that there was never a demand for “humans” to be there in the first place. Not much is known about the story so far, but considering how it revolves around key characters being NPCs such a Premiere, it could give you a little hint at what’s to come.

The second clip is similar to the first but with a different narration and another look.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization will release in Japan on October 27, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The game is headed Westward in Fall 2016.

Rain will likely be in the game, too.

SAO-HR-Argo-Add_08-08-16.jpg

This week’s issue of Dengeki PlayStation has the latest information on Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, providing insight into the game’s new “Emotion Void” communication system.

In Hollow Realization, “emotions” play a key role in both character development and interaction. Specific emotions are displayed within a blue circle on the status screen, and its size will change through character interaction. A heroine’s emotions will also change if you’re on a date with them. Depending on Kirito’s actions, a unique emotion may appear.

During battle, these emotions (such as “passionate” or “mindful of allies”) will appear above the characters, and their actions will change based on their emotions. By sending a “Good!” when an emotion is displayed, they’ll take more progressive action.
Dengeki PlayStation also reveals that Argo will appear in the game. She’s voiced by Shiori Izawa and can fight alongside Kirito in battle as a party member.

Finally, the magazine has a brief Q&A with producer Yosuke Futami. In it, he says that while they have yet to decide in what form, they’ll be sure to have Rain from Sword Art Online: Lost Song appear. Also, PS Vita users can play multiplayer via infrastructure mode, and there is no PlayStation 4 and PS Vita cross-play.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on October 27 in Japan, and this fall in North America and Europe.

Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba. Called NerveGear, it was the first full-dive system and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn’t have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is “Ordinal Scale” (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They’re about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn’t all fun and games…
The cast for the film is as follows:

 • Yo****sugu Matsuoka as Kirito/Kazuto Kirigaya

In a world where an NPC's death is final...

Bandai Namco has shared new information and screenshots of Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization introducing recently confirmed character Kizmel, new story information, gameplay mechanics like Sword Skill Connect and Field Quests, a mysterious character named Richter, and information about the game’s 2016-due major update.

Get the details below.
■ Kizmel (voiced by Shizuka Ito)

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_001.jpg

A dark elf swordswoman who protects the woods. As a special quest NPC, she has another encounter with Kirito and Asuna. She wields a one-handed, curved sword and fights to protect her friends. Her proud and gallant posture remains in effect in “Sword Art: Origin.”
■ Story: A New Death Game
During his adventure, Kirito notices that an NPC he knows is no longer there. Kirito gets an uncomfortable feeling. After, when speaking with the information dealer Argo, Kirito learns of the truths hidden within this game. When an NPC dies, they aren’t resurrected, rather an entirely different character appears. All of the NPCs in “Sword Art: Origin” have their own unique settings and A.I. In other words, there are no replacements, as they are unique existences in this world.
“If NPCs die here, they don’t return to where they came from. This is a very death game itself.”
“NPCs… a very death game itself…”
Premiere is a strange girl Kirito met in the Town of Beginning. She’s also an NPC. Kirito, who gradually deepened his interactions with Premiere during his adventure, worries about and searches for Premiere.
“If she dies, the Premiere we know will never again be…”
If something happened to Premiere, Kirito would never again be able to encounter her. The unfortunate Premiere, however, is taken out to a field by a player who intends to harm her. Kirito makes haste in order to save her.
“Therefore… I have to protect you.”

■ Sword Skill Connect

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_002.jpg

Sword Skills can be linked together under specific conditions, shortening the skills’ commitment window. Since battles without breaks between attacks are possible, you should continue to link your Sword Skills via Sword Connect.

■ Field Quests

Event Fragments

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_003.jpg

When moving about the field, special quests called “Event Fragments” may be triggered. These quests are triggered under certain conditions, but when activated you’ll be able to check their locations on the map.

Episode Quests

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_004.jpg

By clearing Event Fragments on the map, you’ll unlock larger-scale “Episode Quests.” By clearing both Event Fragments and Episode Quests on the field, you’ll be able to obtain various rewards.

Evil Gods

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_005.jpg

When on the field, depending on the time and place, a formidable enemy known as an Evil God may appear. It would be almost impossible to defeat these monsters by playing normally. You might have to challenge it in cooperation with other players online.

■ Richter, The Mysterious Player

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_006.jpg

Richter is a mysterious player. He seems to be an acquaintance of Sinon, but Sinon’s facial expression isn’t reassuring. Additionally, he refers to Kirito as the Black Swordsman, but for him to know that name… what is his real purpose?

■ DLC: “Shrine Maiden of the Abyss”

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_007.jpg

The paid “Shrine Maiden of the Abyss” downloadable content will consist of three chapters that tell a new story.

■ Free Major Update: “Fighters of the Blue Sky”

SAOHR-Details_10-11-16_008.jpg

A free major update tentatively titled “Fighters of the Blue Sky” will be released by the end of 2016 that adds 20 hours of gameplay. Here is everything that’s included:

 • Additional characters Seven and Rain from Sword Art Online: Lost Song
 • Story and map additions
 • New feature: PvP
 • Applied user feedback
 • Additional story volume (play time is approximately 20 hours)
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on October 27 in Japan, and November 8 in North America and Europe. In North America, the PS Vita release will be digital-only.

Interviews, PS Vita, PlayStation 4
Interview: Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization producer Yosuke Futami at NYCC 2016
Published 2 hours ago. 22 comments.
Expect at least 30 to 40 hours of gameplay, pre-update.

NYCC16-Interview-SAO_Top.jpg

At Comic-Con in New York this past weekend, I had the opportunity to sit down with Yosuke Futami, the producer of the upcoming Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization. During our discussion, we talked a bit about the game’s concept, its length, and more.

Get the full interview below.
Is Laughing Coffin involved?
Futami: “That’s a secret!”
Why did you decide to return to an Aincrad-like setting with Ainground instead of jump to the expected Gun Gale Online?
Futami: “Of course, I myself have considered making a Gun Gale Online game. But at the same time, you’ve always had to start at not-level 1 in all of the previous games—you know how Kirito would be level 100 at the start of the previous games, because he’s already that level? I wanted to create a Sword Art Online game where players can start from level 1. That’s the gameplay experience I would like to provide players. So that’s one of the reasons we came up with this idea of Ainground, this Aincrad-like “Sword Art: Origin.” Now, the player can experience how Kirito adventures through the world of Sword Art: Origin from the base level.”
How long can we expect the game to be?
Futami: “If you just play through the main game, it’s about 30 to 40 hours. Of course, including replayability elements like leveling up to the maximum level, doing all the quests and such, then it’s going to be about 70 to 100 hours of gameplay.”
You have all these characters you can recruit for your party. Why did you decide that only Kirito is playable?
Futami: “So in this game the player can only control Kirito, and the others are your party members. One of the main elements of your party members this time is that you can give them orders or commands to tell them what you want them to do in battle. It takes time to put together your best party members—there’s over 300 to recruit—and if you could control the other party members, I don’t think you’d have the time to find your best to develop and organize. That’s why I made only Kirito playable.
“We wanted to create a game where Kirito starts from level 1. Also, if we were to look at Lost Song, which let players use other characters like Asuna—one of the themes of the story is ‘Kirito and the others.’ So they have conversations together with other characters and the story progresses. So the story is not only mainly about Kirito. But in Hollow Realization, it’s Kirito’s story. It’s focused mainly on him. When he meets and interacts with Premiere, that’s when the story moves on. Another reason is that if players tried to max out Kirito’s level and all of his skills, it would take about 50 to 60 hours of playtime. If you tried to do that for a bunch of other playable characters, it would take a really long time.”
Can you talk a bit about the post-launch update you announced at Tokyo Game Show 2016?
Futami: “Well, the update will also include PvP. As for the story, it isn’t quite fixed yet, but we’re considering how Seven and Rain will join Kirito’s party, and they’ll go to the arena to fight against other characters. That’s what we’re trying to build the story around. The play time of the update is estimated to be about 15 to 20 hours. And if you’re including replayability elements, it will be about 50 hours. I say that because we also announced that paid downloadable content is in the works. We’re trying to have the same amount of volume that’s in the update for each of the paid downloadable contents. So if people play the update, experience the Rain and Seven story and its volume, then they’ll have an idea of what to expect in terms of volume for each of the downloadable contents. (Sal: It’s kind of like a free preview.) Indeed, it’s exactly that.”
We’ve only see the PlayStation 4 version of the game so far. How is the PS Vita version coming along?
Futami: “For the PS Vita version, of course there is a difference in the hardware, so things such as graphics and frame rate are a little bit downgraded from PlayStation 4. Any other thing, such as the MMORPG-like gameplay experience you can find in the PlayStation 4 version can also be experienced in the PS Vita version.”
Is there cross-save or cross-play?
Futami: “We don’t have cross-platform gameplay this time, but we will support cross-save. So of course users who like to take their game on the go can bring their saves to PS Vita and back.”
Do you see PS Vita as a relevant platform for Sword Art Online going forward? I know it’s still a popular platform in Japan, but how long do you see that momentum lasting?
Futami: “That’s a difficult question! Of course, if there are a lot of users asking for it, we would like to have a PS Vita version. As you said, it’s still a popular platform in Japan and there are a lot of Sword Art Online fans across the world who want to play the games on PS Vita. I’m still considering PS Vita this year and next year, but after that, maybe we need to shift our focus to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. Maybe I’ll need to focus mainly on those three platforms to create Sword Art Online games. Of course, this is still all just consideration.”
You recently announced Accel World vs. Sword Art Online. Can you share any information about that?
Futami: “Nothing! (Laughs.) There is a lot that I want to say that I can’t say yet. But as for the gameplay experience, the things that players may not be able to do in Hollow Realization may be doable in Accel World vs. Sword Art Online. Also, regarding the story, it’s going to be mainly a story progressed in Sword Art Online, but there will of course be Accel World characters involved. And of course, this game will be easily accessible to all Sword Art Online fans because both titles are written by Reki Kawahara, and there is also a link between their stories. So I think fans of Kawahara’s work will be able to fully enjoy this story.”
PlayStation VR is about to release. What are your thoughts on that?
Futami: “Personally, I think the release of PlayStation VR is really great for the games industry. It brings a virtual reality experience to all the players, and that’s a new experience. As for Sword Art Online, because all of the characters in the game are attack their opponents using swords, that is one of the difficult things to express in virtual reality. So maybe we’ll need a little more time to get used to it in the virtual reality world. But I think the future of virtual reality is really bright and hope that I too can do something involving virtual reality at some point.”

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on October 27 in Japan, and November 8 in North America and Europe. In North America, the PS Vita release will be digital-only.

IMPRESSIONS: Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization

This is shaping up to be a great game.

At NYCC 2016 I had the opportunity to play the latest video game entry in the Sword Art Online series, Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization. The PS4 version of the demo was playable at the Bandai Namco Entertainment booth at the convention.
The demo takes place early on in the game against a boss called Weiss the Kobold Lord. In this demo you control Kirito and have a party that consists of Asuna, Leafa, and Strea. Before stepping into the boss area, the other parties give you information that they gathered on the boss. For example, for the Kobold Lord they tell you of how it has a wide AoE (Area of Effect) attack that takes out a large chunk of your HP.
Before you start the fight, the game advises you on how to tackle the boss. It tells you to first take out the boss’ legs so that it kneels down. Once this is done, the large red gem on its chest can be easily attacked. This is where most of the damage is done to the boss. If you took too long to take out the leg of the boss, the other one would regenerate so you had to be quick with your attacks.

The game plays very similarly to Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment and has elements of the previous game Sword Art Online: Lost Song. What I noticed while playing was that there was no more auto attack. You had to input your attacks manually each time you wished to damage the enemy by pressing the square button. While there is no more auto attack, the ability to jump was added. You could jump and attack to damage a hard to reach target, including that large red gem on the boss’ chest. You still have the ability to dodge an enemy attack. This action has been moved to the R1 button.
The HUD looks very similar to Hollow Fragment’s with the HP bar and SP bar placed at the bottom of the screen. At the center bottom of the HUD, the main skill palette can be reached. Here, all your skills and items are placed so if you want to use them, you control the cursor with the directional button and then select the skill or item you want to use by pressing the Circle button. This main palette is very similar to a skill palette as seen in many MMORPGs.

I found the main palette to be very useful while playing the demo. All of my skills were right in front of me and it was easy for me to select the right skill for certain situations. If there was a certain skill you liked to use a lot, then you could set it to the Triangle button. For this demo, the skill set to the button was the Sword Skill, called Horizontal.
Like previous games, skills cost SP to use. For the skills used in the demo, most of them cost around 50 SP. Similar to Hollow Fragment, SP can be regenerated over time as you stand still or if you attack the enemy with normal attacks.
As you fight the boss, your party members will ask you to do certain actions such as heal or perform a Sword Skill. If you perform a skill at that time, then you will chain a skill with your party member. For this demo, it was usually Asuna who asked me to perform a skill with her, but that may have been just a coincidence.

The boss fights are performed in a raid style format. You work with multiple NPC parties to take down the boss. These party members will usually do their own thing during the encounter. You also have the ability to tell your party members what to do during the course of the battle, both your own party and the NPC parties. When you hold down the L1 button a sub palette shows up in the upper left corner of the screen. Here you can tell your party members what to do. You can tell them to do many actions such as target a particular body part or dodge an attack. This can be very useful if you want to keep your party members alive during a boss fight.
When fighting an enemy, you can lock on to a target by clicking the R3 stick. You can also lock onto the boss’ body parts such as its legs or its tail. This can really help when you want to focus on a particular target.

As you fight the boss, members from the NPC parties can be taken out. During this time, a skull will appear where they were killed. If you run to this spot and hold the Circle button, you can revive that party member. This is pretty important to do, as it is a bit difficult to kill the boss without the other parties.
One of the more interesting additions to the game is a time limit for boss fights. When I fought the boss the first time I did not realize there was a time limit and time ran out on me. The second time around I was able to beat the boss with around 4 minutes left. The boss fight had a time limit of 10 minutes. I don’t know if this time limit was imposed only for the demo or if it will be featured in the full game. I found it interesting and more challenging to fight a boss with a time limit, as it was a nice change of pace from previous games.

The demo was very fun and it was a challenge to keep my party members alive during the boss fight. Luckily, there’s no game over when your party members die this time like in Hollow Fragment. The gameplay felt much smoother and less clunky than previous games and it looks nicer than previous entries. The only problems I saw during the demo were the camera angles and the targeting system. The camera would sometimes move to a weird angle when attacking the boss. I would be unable to see my character and it would make it tough. Also, the targeting system felt weird. I couldn’t select where I would want my cursor to lock onto. I could only do that if I specifically attacked that part. Once I did that, I could lock onto that part. Other than those two problems, the game played great and I’m definitely looking forward to the full version once it releases.
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization is the latest entry in the Sword Art Online video game series. It is developed by Aquria and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is set to release in Japan on October 27, 2016 and in North America and Europe on November 8, 2016 for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Contrary to her lovely appearance, Yuuki is a remarkable Sword Skill user, and a go-getter swordswoman known by the nickname “Absolute Sword.

” Just like Kirito and the others, she participated in the beta test for “Sword Art: Origin.” She wields a one-handed sword in Sword Art: Origin and fights alongside them. It appears that there may also be a Pillow Talk scene with her.

Mysterious NPC (voiced by Yuiko Tatsumi)

A mysterious NPC who looks exactly like Premiere. She has a cruel expression, but could her true intentions be?

■ An NPC’s Death Game

Sword Art: Origin is a death game for NPCs. Within the town are both logged in Sword Art: Origin players and NPCs created by the Sword Art: Origin system. Each character has their own personality and traits.

1. Other Players

These are the other players logged in to Sword Art: Origin. Asuna, Leafa, and others are among them.

If they die out in the field, they’ll be able to resurrect with “return by death.” These players are indicated by a green cursor over their head.

2. Other Players (AI)

AI characters created by the Sword Art: Origin system that can be recruited as party members.

Each and every one of them is unique, and if they die they do not return. These players are indicated by a yellow cursor over their head.

3. Nameless NPCs

NPCs without names assigned to roles created by game system. They cannot be recruited as party members. When AI players who possess roles such as shop assistant die, they’re replaced by a nameless NPC.

Interview: Yosuke Futami on Sword Art Online Hollow Realization

Are you all ready to jump into Ainground?

I got a chance to speak with Yosuke Futami the producer for the new Sword Art Online Hollow Realization for the PlayStation 4. He sheds some insight on some of the mechanics and we discuss the popularity of the series in the West.
OR: I’m just curious to know what factors go into determining whether you are going to release a physical edition of a game vs a downloadable title. And can we expect to see any more physical releases in the future?
YF: Sword Art Online game, novels and anime and very popular in North America. So we released a physical version for Sword Art Online Lost Song. The physical versions were very popular in North America which will determine whether or not we will release a physical release. From now own, we are trying to release them at the same time as the Japanese version.
OR: What made you decide to bring the story back to Aincrad?
YF: The world is not Aincrad but “Ainground”. Aincrad is separated into 100 separated floors. In Ainground all those floors are put together in one map like a puzzle.
OR: Previous games had elements of dating sims, can we expect to see an expansion of that system in Hollow Realization?
YF: OF COURSE! The date system has returned in this title. The “Emotion Void” system is implemented to express the way NPC characters feel. Players can really get close to the NPC characters.

OR: How much of an impact will that have on the actual gameplay. For example, let’s say the characters get really close like almost lovers. Would that enhance their abilities in battle with you?

YF: There are so many things that will happen if you two get close! For example, you can give them presents like weapon and equipment. As you get friendly with them their stats will be raised.

OR: Recently it was announced that Sword Art and Accel World will have a crossover together. Has there been any talk or discussion on bringing that over to the West?

YF: I hope western players will get to enjoy this game. We cannot talk about too many details. But I hope you look forward to hearing more details soon!

OR: To wrap things up, do you have and special messages that you would like to say to fans that are looking forward to Sword Art Hollow Realization or just Sword Art Online in general?

YF: Hollow Realization is very fantastic. Those who have played previous Sword Art Online games and newcomers can enjoy it. Sword Art Online is a big franchise. I would like for players to enjoy not only the game but also the novels, movies and anime!

Sword Art Online Hollow Realization is now available for the PlayStation 4.
