Ryan Coogler & MACRO Set Black Panthers Pic With Warner Bros; Daniel Kaluuya & Lakeith Stanfield In Talks

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and Charles D. King’s MACRO (Mudbound) are producing movie Jesus Was My Homeboy, about iconic Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton, for Warner Bros.

Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuyaa is in talks to star as activist Hampton with Atlanta and Sorry To Bother You star Lakeith Steanfield in talks to play William O’Neal, the man who betrayed Hampton to the FBI. Shaka King (Newlyweeds) will direct and produce from a script he wrote with Will Berson (Sea Oak). The film will follow the rise and untimely demise of Hampton as seen through O’Neal’s eyes. It will explore how the FBI infiltrated the Black Panthers, the psychology of their informant and the notorious assassination of the young political leader who died aged only 21.

I'm sure there will be some who are mad at Kaluuya playing Hampton.

Yeah I don't even know why bring that up.

This sounds good to me

Looking forward to this.

In the Black community, at least these days, there’s a more vocal group of people who are against non-American Black actors playing famous historical Black Americans. Like they feel they must be played only by Americans for various reasons.

A lot of people don't even know that Kaluuya isn't American. I'm sure it'll be fine.

It'll be more than fine.
Not that many people will care. I don't even know why it was brought up. It will be such a small minority. 99% of us don't care.

I only brought it up because there’s always some group of people just looking to be “offended” in some way with this.

Kaluuya even had to deal with it during his “Get Out” time.

Again, such a small miniscule amount of people that it doesn't matter or even needed to be mentioned. Who of note other than Samuel L Jackson said anything?

All the people complaining about people getting offended are just as annoying as the people who get offended.

This film sounds great, .5-1% of people will be mad that Kaluuya is British. It doesn't matter. Let's just talk about how the film sounds good or bad

I was just simply noting the possibility of some people complaining about it. Some of y’all took this further than expected. Hahaha.

I see this with white British actors playing american roles... but black people are far too hungry to support black movies to worry about where someone is from. We literally claim anything that resembles black as our own. That vocal group is probably Russian trolls.

If he can do an accent and play the role as suppose to, I see no issue at all

Looks like we may have a Best Picture Contender if the movie is even half as good as that trailer makes it look.

The trailer is so, so, good.

I hope this makes the extended elligibility period for this year's Oscars (end if February). Seriously. This wasn't on my radar at all but after the trailer this is a day one trip to the theater.

If Kaluuya brings this kind of energy for the entire film, and the movie's half as good as the trailer, give him all the awards. Way to command a two minute clip.

This looks fantastic. Lakeith Stanfield and Jesse Plemons keep killing it.

Wasn't aware of this film until now. Seems like a heavy hitter.

If Black British actors were doing a bad job at playing notable historical African Americans then there might be an issue but most of them are doing a solid job.

David Oyelowo was a good MLK in Selma
Chiwetel Ejiofor was good as Soloman Northup in 12 Years A slave
Cynthia Erivo was good as Harriet Tubman in Harriet
Babou Ceesay was good as Bill Riddick in The Best Of Enemies
