Season 1 / Episode 8: What If… Ultron Won?

So now we have established Ultron Prime and his motivations, we have also established the stakes for the Watcher and the multiverse and the fact that he’s going to recruit a team to deal with the multiversal threat.

The first 2 members of the Guardians of the Multiverse are the Watcher and Doctor Strange Supreme. Now who’s next? We have seen in the trailer footage Thor interacting with DSS, they talk about zombies and Thor is seen fighting Ultron Sentries in Vegas and joining the Guardians of the Multiverse on a battle in Tokyo/Japan by the looks of it.

We’ve also seen T’Challa Star Lord, post apocalyptic Black Widow, armoured Gamora, Captain Carter, King Killmonger and Party Thor all teaming up In Tokyo/Japan.

We shall see how they manage to cram all of the remaining pieces of the puzzle like the assembling of the team and the battle versus Ultron Prime in the last episode without making it feel rushed. Hopefully the run time is more in line with how a fleshed out and rewarding finale should be.

That shot of Ultron/Galactus really threw me off for a moment.
Pretty clever of the Watcher to find refuge in Strange Supreme's destroyed universe.

And how about president Rogers?

It's good to know that, no matter what the tragedy, Hawkeye reacts to it the same way:

Turning his hair into a mohawk.

On a more critical perspective: Why couldn't the zombies episode had more of a tone like this?

I gotta give a shoutout to Captain Marvel who came in, gave a decent fight against the all powerful Ultron Prime until he decided to blow up the planet they where in taking her out in the process.

Also Ultron with only the Mind Stone took out Thanos with an almost fully assembled gauntlet like it was nothing. That was a bit jaring but i guess it kind of explains how he was able to take out all the avengers earlier on. Of course they gotta bend certain elements in order to fit a specific storyline and in this case it was Ultron’s Prime origin, his power level and the threat he poses to the multiverse.

Another thing, Ultron Prime’s voice was kind of bland and forgettable. When they’re going for this big of a scope I hoped they had someone else with a more imposing voice at least.

One of the top episodes of the season for me. I think next week will also be a great one. It had me hooked for the full 30 minutes. It was probably the shortest episode so far too.

Im rarely on the edge of my seat but this episode had me on the edge of my seat! I wasn't expecting to bring Ultron into the multiverse! Dang.

Really enjoyed this episode, one of the best ones, felt like the Black Widow/Hawkeye movie we should have got all along a few years back and moved the story along nicely with some nice surprises. Been a bit of a rollercoaster this series but hopefully set up for a good ending.

Easily best episode of this show so far. Yeah, some noticeable not the voice know stuff going on and such, but outside of that, this episode I think used the What If concept best. So many epic moments, also.

My ranking of the best battles in the season:

1. Ultron Prime vs The Watcher
2. Party Thor vs Captain Marvel
3. Loki vs Hank Pym
4. Evil Doctor Strange vs Doctor Strange
5. The Collector vs T’Challa Star Lord

I have to agree that this one was the best episode yet, even though it's only the first half of the story that we saw.

It was cool seeing Ultron being such a powerhouse of a threat, especially since I felt that he was a bit neutered in AOU. The only downside of it was that Spader didn't come back to voice him. I did like Ross Marquand's take on Ultron but it still sounded off.

It was also great to see Uatu finally take initiative and do something. The fight across the multiverse between him and Ultron was badass.

Also as funny as the last episode was, nothing in Party Thor made me laugh as hard as Ultron slicing Thanos down the middle with his energy beam as soon as he emerged from the portal. I know this show isn't meant to really follow the same rules as the mainline films, but two things there: Thanos had five Infinity Stones in the gauntlet and he did absolutely nothing to defend himself? Also, that just makes Vision in Infinity War look that much weaker if that was an option the whole time. Also funny to see Tony die yet again here. He's really the Kenny McCormick of this show.

I also loved Hawkeye in this episode. It's like he was fully allowed to be the smartass that he is since the other Avengers besides Natasha were dead. :o

Really excited for the finale next weekend, and I'm hoping President Rogers pops up again as more than a cameo.

I had that exact reaction about Vision. I already thought his treatment in IW was lackluster, but this made him seem even weaker

This episode was frightening. Ultron was frightening. I wish they got James Spader back to voice him though.

Did anyone else get Galactus vibes from that part in Uatu and Ultron's fight when Ultron bit into the multiverse?

Can't wait to see how they resolve this.

Guardians of the Multiverse assemble!

I think Doctor Strange Supreme will be the one mandated by the Watcher to assemble a team of “heroes” from around the Multiverse. I don’t think the other “heroes” will interact directly with the Watcher since I feel like he’s such a otherworldly concept only perceived by those with a massive amount of power and/or knowledge.

The Watcher actually managed to put a really good fight against Ultron Prime himself. Doctor Strange Supreme is of a lower level but still a massive force to be reckoned with. Party Thor will probably give a similar account of himself as CM did and then the other “heroes” are basically super soldiers, vibranium enhanced, with alien tech and high intellect, powerful weaponry, high level of fighting skill and asp just street level.

Should be interesting to see how everyone will play a part in taking down Ultron Prime, his gigantic spaceship and that army.

Vision in Infinity War was barely functioning after being stabbed by Corvus Glaive. And the Mind Stone was almost disconnected from him when he faced Thanos.
As for this episode, I bet Thanos didn't expect such ruthlessness and that's why he was caught off guard. Ultron punked him the same way Michael Corleone did with all the mob bosses at the end of the Godfather.

This episode is easily the strongest and finally Uatu finally gets involved at last. Can’t wait to see the follow up with the guardians of the Multiverse assemble.

One thing I took away from this episode... I need Jeffrey Wright to play a live action Watcher in MOM.

I’m wondering if they will actually bring The Watcher to live action and have Write reprise the role? I hope so, it will definitely make this animated show mean something.

Very good episode.

While Strange Supreme is still the best one, this is a second.

The most interesting stuff for me was the Jeffrey Wright stuff.

Heck, Jeffrey Wright could read the phonebook and make it sound interesting.

I would really love to see him in live action as the Watcher.

I really liked the idea of the Watcher having the tables turned on him .
He can no longer just observe and judge the actions of these characters.

He's now a participant, albeit a forced participant, who can't distant himself from these worlds he's been observing.

He's now the hunted .

It reminds me of classic films such as Rear Window, The Conversation, and Blow Up, which the voyer has the tables turned on them , and they become prey in a sense.

Hopefully part 2 will be as good as part 1.

Jeffrey Wright losing his sh** was amazing and the Charles Xavier and Galactus nods were wild.

I noticed the Galactus Easter Egg, but there was one for Professor X too?! Sweet!

Granted, it's in Russian, but it totally looks like it says Charles Xavier.

I did take that into account too, that Ultron was way more ruthless than Vision. But Vision can also recognize threats and dispose of them with hostility, like he did with so many Ultron drones in AOU, although I barely count them since even the non-superpowered ones like Hawkeye didn't even break much of a sweat fighting them.
