Animal Farm

Will they make this classic in to a mo cap feature? :(
Doesn't it deserve to be live action?

Like Babe or something? And how does the major investment in a cgi feature being made by one of the most accomplished mo-cap actors represent some kind of lesser adaptation?

Making it mo-cap means that the humans will be mo-capped too, right?

Perhaps, perhaps not.

Even then, how is that some sort of lesser fate?

TNT did an adaptation a while back where they went the Babe route and just had their mouths CG. Though having the animals all be fully CG works better as it gives more emotion facially.

Netflix Acquires George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’; Andy Serkis Directs & Matt Reeves Produces

Days after acquiring his film Mowgli from Warner Bros, Netflix has doubled down with Andy Serkis by acquiring rights to the George Orwell novel Animal Farm. Serkis will direct a performance-capture film. 6th & Idaho’s Matt Reeves, Rafi Crohn and Adam Kassan will produce with The Imaginarium’s Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish.

The Netflix deal reunites Serkis with Reeves after they worked together on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Reeves made an overall Netflix deal in January.

“We are incredibly excited to have finally found the perfect creative home in Netflix, for this extraordinarily zeitgeist work by George Orwell,” Serkis said in a statement. “On top of that, to be re-united with my great friend Matt Reeves, with his acute sensitivity, storytelling intelligence and honesty, and command in this realm, is to have the very best scenario for our long held passion to bring this fable alive.”

Cavendish said the intention is to bring “Animal Farm to the screen in a thoroughly contemporary fashion, which will highlight the staggering relevance today of the satirical and dramatic power of Orwell’s re-imagined classic.”

Said Reeves: “Andy is such an incredible artist — he is truly a force of nature, and a beautiful soul. To be able to work with him again and with Jonathan and Netflix to see Orwell’s classic tale brought to life in a totally new and exciting way is an absolute dream.”

Netflix may as well be his new partner.

Doubt it will pan out but Bale must’ve enjoyed the mo-cap work with Serkis.

However, a new casting sheet has revealed the film is looking to assemble an all-star cast.

According to Richtman’s Patreon, Netflix is interested in having Bale play Napoleon, the pig who emerges as the leader of Animal Farm after the rebellion. At first, he is not particularly charismatic but rather a jovial and caring leader who later declines into a cruel and sadistic megalomaniacal sociopath.

Other than Bale, there is no word on who else may join the ensemble. The film still has quite a number of roles to cast, including Lucky, Mollie, Snowball, and Boxer.

Bale will probably do it. It's easy money and he could have fun with it. The live action TNT adaptation that @terry78 mentioned earlier in this thread had a pretty impressive cast for a TV film too (Patrick Stewart, Kelsey Grammer, Ian Holm, Pete Postlethwaite) so I'm curious to see who will be in this one besides Serkis.

Andy Serkis Is 'Reimagining' George Orwell's Animal Farm For 'A Post-Truth World' - /Film

the subscriber edition of Total Film's January 2023 issue, the director opened up about the ongoing production. Boasting that it has "an incredible cast that I can't announce yet," Serkis at least was able to tease how his "very contemporaneous version" will differ from previous attempts to bring this story to life:

"It's a reimagining of 'Animal Farm' for this generation, for a post-truth world. It has humor at the core of it, but the politics are sort of smuggled in underneath. It will appeal to a broad audience, and will resonate with all ages in different ways."

The "post-truth" comment sure rings true for current politics in the United States, though it's somewhat eyebrow-raising to note that this movie will somehow be less-than-upfront about its own commentary. We're ... curious to see how that could play out, to say the least. Serkis also notes that he's earned the goodwill of the Orwell estate, adding another fascinating layer to whatever he has up his sleeve with this movie.
