BREAKING NEWS: Russia invades Georgia

To Lizard, lol I think, I am ;)
Everyone will protect the own country

To Obake Tora
lmao! Good question! ;)
I love various cultures. I like the comic art and I want to be the artist.
Of course, we need the staff! Lol

And serious now.
Petersburg really beautiful city. I want to visit that city, too (in September, maybe)
But weather there sucks sometimes. It frequently changes and has a cold wind. (A little similar to Amsterdam). I can tell to you more in private, if you want.
Also if you have any questions about the literature, I’ll be glad to tell to you, too

P.S. I do not care of actions of Washington, by the way

So it looks like south ossetia is now going to be part of russia. This reminds me a crapload of the chek move in the 60s.

That is not all that Russia wants, Russia has made it very clear they want the Georgian President to step down.....and IMO, if they allow what is soverign Georgia land to simply go to Russia, what will keep them from doing this in Estonia, Lativia, Ukraine, etc.?

*sighs* This is far from over...

?????????It's reminding me of what they did to the cheks back in the late 60's.

GORI, Georgia - A cease-fire between Georgia and Russia teetered on the verge of collapse Thursday as Russia's foreign minister declared the world "can forget about any talk about Georgia's territorial integrity" and new explosions were heard near the strategic Georgian town of Gori despite Moscow's pledges to withdraw.

The declaration from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came simultaneously with the announcement that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was meeting in the Kremlin with the leaders of Georgia's two separatist provinces.

Russia's slow withdrawal from Georgia and the comments from Moscow present a challenge to the EU-sponsored cease-fire agreement designed to end seven days of fighting. The EU accord had envisioned Russian and Georgian forces returning to their original positions.

But even when the fighting ends, Georgia has lost its regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, in Russia's view.

"One can forget about any talk about Georgia's territorial integrity because, I believe, it is impossible to persuade South Ossetia and Abkhazia to agree with the logic that they can be forced back into the Georgian state," Lavrov told reporters.

In 1968, in response to a brief period of liberalization, five Eastern Bloc countries invaded Czechoslovakia. Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev viewed this intervention as vital to the preservation of the Soviet, socialist system and vowed to intervene in any state that sought to replace Marxism-Leninism with capitalism.[4] In 1969, Czechoslovakia was turned into a federation of the Czech Socialist Republic and Slovak Socialist Republic. Under the federation, social and economic inequities between the Czech and Slovak halves of the state were largely eliminated. A number of ministries, such as Education, were formally transferred to the two republics. However, the centralized political control by the Communist Party severely limited the effects of federalization.

Yes, Secretary Rice sees that comparison as well.....

In her press conference yesterday she specifically said......"This is NOT 1968......"

Well many, many historians and geographers have held to the thinking that WWIII would begin in the Balkans.......this is pretty damn close.

I must have missed that part. Bad speed reading.

The news has used that sound bite quite a bit today.......

I'm watching a news conference right now with Defense Secretary Gates.....

It does look like that that area will be going to Russia, which I think sets a BAD precedence.....BUT they know much more about the situation than I ever will so I will concede to their decisions....and not debate that issue.

We are looking at it as far as military as a humanitarian effort only. Which means of course helping them rebuild the infrastructure, ports, etc....

The fact that Russia went after the ports cries BS for me........hitting infrastructure, major cities, seaports.....thorughout history has shown you are taking over a country, or trying to cripple it beyond existence....*shakes head*

Rice is in France, on her way to Georgia.....so we should be getting more specifics after that....

What all of this looks like to me is....with many of the former Soviet Bloc countries moving towards a more western style of government, economy etc in joining or seeking to join the EU, NATO, etc is scaring the hell out of Russia, and they are taking back their traditional sphere of influence.

Is this taking us back into another Cold War? Time will tell.......

I never watch news conferences, but I probably read that and missed it for some reason.

While this sucks, the georgians can rebuild and south osstia seems like it's been a canker sore for them anyway. The problem will be if russia did this because of georgia's moves to become part of NATO or because of the reason's they listed.

This isn't the start of WWW3, russia doesn't have the resources to sustain long term combat, they know this and they're not stupid. This was most likely a statement to show they still "count".

I'm a news hog, I read 3 to 4 newspapers a day, Times, World Report, National Geographic.....and I'm watching news pretty much all day right now. Of course they will chill once school starts again....but the TV goes on and I go from station to station....as well as listening to NPR in the car.....I'm OCD I'm sure....

I agree on all of that......I want to trust Russia, and say that all of this was because of the peacekeepers being killed.....but damn.......over doing it alittle...

As far as WW3, I totally agree......another Cold War? possible.

And if the US and European countries, especially Poland etc....think that losing that sovereign land is best for Georgia....then cool....I'll bow to their judgment.

Yep, the Russians don't seem to be going home at this point. Looks like an occupation to me.

What I'm seeing is the russians refuse to speak to the georgian president at all. Also they will leave when an official agreement is reached. Clever, huh? As part of the current ceasefire the russians can't leave until the president steps down.

The thing is, they are supposed to be pulled back INTO the regions that are wanting out of Georgia. THAT is not happening.

Exactely, I think they worded the cease fire in a way that they're not going anywhere until a permenant agreement is reached with the gov. in georgia (the president of which they will not speak to) and a team of international peacekeepers is selected. I think they're going to jailhouse lawyer the president out of office.

Yep, he did.......and that is why we have tied hands here.....

No one is saying it, but the reason we are being such yellow bellies with this thing is because we have "no room" to talk.....
