Comic Art you HATE - Part 1

Yeah, I steal ideas from other forums now. I searched for bad art but these words are too short, so.. if there's an existing thread on the same subject, delete this one. For a start, an obvious choice: a Liefeld

I have a bunch of awful Batman art--which I should be posting this week.. anyway, feel free to contribute and discuss (criticize, actually :woot:)

Frank Quitely is HORRIBLE. He totally ****ed up X-men. EVERYONE in it looked fat and doughy. I guess he figured since they were wearing leather, they didn't need muscles. Jean looked like Drew Barrymore (as she looks now), Wolverine looked greasy, evil, sleazy, and way too tanned, Cyclops looked like he had a potato head, etc etc.
(on that note, Igor Kordey sucked bad to on X-Men, "Cable", although Fantomex came out of him, who is awesome and was WAY underused until now).

Larry Stroman is HORRIBLE. He makes EVERYONE look like mutants (the BAD kind), disabled, or just warped. He ruined current issues of X-Factor, and he absolutely MASSACRED "The Times and Life of Lucas Bishop", which otherwise was really good. (They suck you in with GREAT Ariel Olivetti covers, and then...) His OLD X-Factor stuff wasn't that bad, kind of so-so, "stylistic", etc , but now, it's just like 2 second sketches, and a pile of BS.

One of my "faves":

I can't find any from the Bishop series, but kid Bishop looks like he has a little round bowling ball for a head with no eyes. Also, in X-Factor, I couldn't find many either, but like, he'll have some "fat" guys just so warped and distorted, they look like Barbapapas, or have kids look like 2-foot high beach balls. It's sickening. I can honestly say that most people here could probably draw many of his pages.

I HATED Steve Dillon on Wolverine:Origins (an AMAZING series that started kind of slow, but tied together very well, and was great overall, as a 50 Issue story). He may be fine for Punisher or whatever (or maybe not), but he makes EVERYONE look evil, sinister, scary, mad, in MOST drawings, ESPECIALLY when the situation doesn't call for it. He's also TOO simplistic. His drawings in Origins actually kind of creeped me out. And I'm not sure why all of his characters are always so tired (as denoted by the bags that he draws under everyone's eyes).

Sorry for the small pics, it's all I could find. If anyone has anymore examples, I'd love for everyone to get a chance to get a laugh or seven.

Badrock's leg pouches are numbered, so maybe there IS rhyme or reason to them.

"I always number pouches to keep track of them. Nothing annoys me more than ""artists"" who overuse pouches, I always tell them less is more"

- Rob Liefeld

Tim Sale doesn't deserve to be put in the same sentence as Liefeld.

I don't like poking fun at artists, but come on...

Has anyone read the Deadpool Corps. I've been reading it lately and I'm surprised there isn't a slew of new Liefeld hate. The guy will never change.

I don't get the cult of Quitely. He's improved on stuff like Batman & Robin, but his work on New X-Men was atrocious. Just really unattractive.

I like Kelley Jones SOMETIMES but good god, most of his Batman covers were utter crap. Just really lazy looking, like he took a first draft that was completely disproportioned and said "done." And that blame is on DC for apparently having zero quality control. There's no excuse for stuff like that; it's not a matter of taste (which I admit, Quitely is) - it's just objectively bad.

Like what the **** is this? Seriously.

Why is his head so small? What...what... GAHHH

Nothing about that torso makes sense.

Anatomy "jumping the shark" you might say...

Kelley Jones was/is famous for that. Someone please tell me what is holding Azrael's belt up?

I have never, ever thought of that as other than his chosen style, he is not making 'mistakes' there at all. There is a famous quote from Salvidor Dali, 'learn the rules before you break them', meaning, make sure you can draw real and still life very well before you go into trying surrealism, or any kind of experimental art. Same deal with Andy Warhol, a lot of folk probably think he was doing all those appropriated images cause he couldn't draw or paint, but the guy made sure he was a consumate artist in the field of real life before he went into pop art.
I bet you a million comics that Kelley Jones can draw life/still life drawings perfectly in proportion, he just likes to exagerate superhero body shapes to create a certain effect.
I guess he is playing with the concept that these figures are generally exagerated *anyway*, so why not push it a bit and see what you can come up with, and what you get are more surreal, striking images of superheroes.
I really like his covers, although that one you posted is not one of his best, it's not very interesting looking, just one figure, he usally has more than that going on, and that 'Batman' design is not the best either.
I also bought the mini series he did, 'Gotham after Midnight', and his interior artwork was very interesting indeed, it fit in with the whole gothic horror tone of the story perfectly.

I've always thought there was a chance Remy might be a crack head.

That's what happens to a lot of thiefs, you start off a real egg head, then you start chickening out, and next thing you know you're a crack head.(i have never tried it myself, never got around to that one, lol)

In actual fact, Gambit was originally not supposed to be that good looking of a guy when he was originally pitched, they wanted it to be more about his wit and charm that got the ladies interested, but, y'know, they changed it and made him a real good looking lotherio.
