Dune: Prophecy

HBO Teases 2024 Lineup with Kate Winslet, Jerrod Carmichael, and…Dragons - IndieWire

“Dune: The Prophecy” (Fall 2024)

Formerly under the working title “Dune: The Sisterhood,” Bloys announced the “Dune” spinoff series is expected to premiere on Max in the fall of 2024. It’s currently finishing shooting in Europe, and he “hopes” to have it ready to debut before the end of the year.

In February 2023, “Dune: The Prophecy” lost its director, Johan Renck, and one of its cast members, Shirley Henderson. Production began in November 2022, but was put on hold to find replacements.

“As ‘Dune: The Sisterhood’ has entered a pre-scheduled hiatus, there are some creative changes being made to the production in an effort to create the best series possible and stay true to the source material,” an HBO Max spokesperson said at the time. “Johan Renck has completed his work on the series and a new director will be brought on; through mutual agreement, Johan is moving on to pursue other projects. Additionally, Shirley Henderson will be exiting the series and will no longer be playing Tula Harkonnen.”

“The Prophecy” is a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel “Dune.” It’s set 10,000 years before the events depicted in the 2021 film and follows the Harkonnen Sisters, a clan that battles forces threatening the future of mankind, and the establishment of the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.

Holy s*** I had no idea they’d already filmed this. I was beginning to think it was one of those projects doomed to languish in development hell. What a pleasant surprise!
They did a Born Again with this where they changed the showrunner and pilot director, two main actors left due to scheduling conflict and they reshot the first episode and tried to restructure the show script-wise to make it feel more like the movies. They stopped filming for months and restarted shooting during the strike due to British Equity law. Let's hope this turns out at least decent.

Showrunner Alison Schapker brought a couple of her Westworld collaborators on board: writer/co-EP Jordan Goldberg and director Richard J. Lewis.

I wonder when we'll be hearing more about this. Surely WB will be capitalizing off of Dunes current popularity at the box office.......

We will see if this is true.

Yesterday it was Tabu, today Jihae. They stopped casting people with surnames. :o

I like the diverse cast.

The lack of Villeneuve and a Frank Herbert basis of the story shows. It’s more like a generic version of Dune.

That said, as a TV version, could be interesting for some backstory.

They could have at least kept Johan Renck who has an amazing resume in TV. But they scrapped his footage and went with the director of Underworld 5.

This is true, but I am also hoping that the creative team behind it are also landed a lot more creative freedom to play. It an awesome universe, so while I am not a fan of the Brian Herbert stuff, I am all for good creatives playing in this universe and possibly elevating that material

Looks good but funny that it's set 10,000 years before and yet the culture and tech still look kinda the same.

Just a reminder that they changed both the showrunner and the director after they started filming and went on a hiatus for months in order to make major changes, both in the script and in the show's tone, because partially Renck's vision (reportedly) felt too auteur like and they wanted something that resembles the films more.

Obviously potentially concerning right there, but to be fair I don't know what the other person had in mind. Maybe it was going to be super off the rails like the Jodorowsky movie was gonna be. So I am willing to give this a shot and see what reviews and such look like.

Weird how you can really tell that its a tv spin-off, just by the color grading/aspect ratio they presented. The color grading they chose isn't very flattering. The lighting looks dark similar to the Game of Thrones spin off show.
