G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - Why it might not suck

As a G.I. Joe fan I hope the movie turns out good and the super bowl did look kinda promising. I think it will turn out somewhat like Transformers; the general audience will like it but the "hardcore" joe fans probably won't.

Now I'm not taking a jab at hardcore Joe fans so please; don't get offended. I'm just saying that anyone I've ever talked to loved Transformers; whether they were hardcore fans that grew up with the show or not. After reading posts on this site though; I feel that I'm part of a very small group that thought Transformers was really good.

I saw evidence of my theory for G.I. Joe's possible success when I saw the trailer while watching the super bowl with some of my family. My uncle who isn't really familiar with G.I. Joe thought the trailer looked awesome and couldn't wait until it came out. My younger cousin felt the same way. Now my uncle grew up with the 12 in Joe's with the "kung-fu grip" not Snake-Eyes and Cobra. My cousin is in 3rd grade so he wasn't around when Joe was at it's most popular time.

Did someone just indicate that, regardless of quality, people would not want to see a GI JOE movie?

GI Joe was never as popular as Transformers. NEVER. In fact, i may be as bold to go on and say, that it was Transformers that put Hasbro on the map as a successful toy company and due to TF's selling success, it helped along Hasbro's other properties like 'My Little Pony, G.I Joe and Visonaries' to become more popular than they would have been.

But that was years ago.

What TF has over Joe is that since the 80's, it has continued in various other incarnation ie animated series, toys, comics etc.....Joe has not. I don't think you can compare the two.

G.I.Joe is not that recognizable, especially as a work of fiction, which the movie is suppose to be representing. Sure, general audiences will remember it as part of the eighties, but it's popularity was severely eclipsed by Transformers and Ninja Turtles. Whereas both those franchises have had successful shows carry their toylines and mythos consistently for 25 years, G.I.Joe has not. It has, in fact, limped along with the help of Transformers, since the two universes are interlinked. Despite the fact that the comics have a cult following, it's much further back in the public conscious than you're giving it credit for.

Did the hardcore Transformers fans hate the movie that much? I don't think they did.

Transformers was at least able to stay pretty consistently popular and in the public conscious since the Beast Wars revamp in the 1990's. And that lasted for several years. Then they picked up even more steam again with the movie.

I don't recall saying that GI JOE was as popular as Transformers.

"Limping along with TRANSFORMERS" in the public consciousness is irrelevant, because the fact is...GI JOE, for whatever reason, IS in the public consciousness. It's a war adventure film with elements of a disaster flick. It's likely going to be pretty big.

Actually, GI Joe in it's current form (early 80's) was extremely popular as much so as Transformers. TF had a leg up because they were also a Japanese property and associated along with all things Mecha at the time, hence how we got Jet Fire.

As a toy I'd say G.I.Joe is a noteable property, but not as a fiction, unlike Transformers. So I doubt without a good film to carry it, it will do very well. Transformers kind of has a pre-built in audience with it's already over the top special effects.

Fah! In your dreams. First of all Transformers was NOT associated with all things Mecha, in fact Transformers is completely NOT Mecha; Mecha has pilots, Transformers do not. Second of all, Transformers is a United States toyline, not a Japanese toyline. The precusors, Diaclone et.all, began in Japan, but it was comic scribes Bob Budinsky and Denny O'Neil who actually created what we now know as Transformers.

Thirdly Jetfire came from Macross, which was a TV show in it's own right.

G.I.Joe was never as big, and most certainly isn't as big now. G.I.Joe has a comic and a toyline, Transformers has a comic, cartoon, live action movie series and about three or four major toylines. Huge difference.

Back in the early 80's, when I grew up, Transformers and GI Joe were even in popularity both with the toons and toys. But Transformers definately displayed the staying power as giant robots proved to be more interesting than the macho military Joe's in the long run.

I was a G.I. Joe fan as a kid and I saw the Super Bowl add and have looked at some pics online. I don't like the uniforms. I understand that this is a movie and supposed to be more realistic than the cartoon but these things are goofy looking.

It is the same thing they did with X-Men though. Any unit that incorporates people from all walks of life needs uniforms for morale and - uniformity. The problem with the uniforms being used is that... usually body armor is INSIDE the fabric.

There are exceptions though:

To be honest though, I'd have preferred more camoflauge or at least some Army green and Navy blue. Something more standard:

Well the thing I liked about the Joe's was their individual look. There was no uniformity. You can tell they were all on the same team but each person had their skillset and appropriate equipment and outfit.

However this is a military unit and people in military units generally wear the same outfit

Really? You don't say. Well ****, someone should have told the creators of GI Joe. Surely they missed that memo. You and the people making this movie are definately missing the point of GI Joe. The Joe's shouldn't be some generic homogenized military unit like they're doing in this film. That wasn't what they were back in the toons, toys, and comics. I understand there are some rediculous characters you can't translate in live action. This doesn't have to be the Village People versus Cobra, but come on show a little just a little loyalty to the source material.

Which was the villiage people vs. Cobra.

It really was. I mean you had one dude who wore nothing but army pants and a denim jacket, with the sleeves ripped off, some dudes actually wore freakin' sports jerseys!!! The helicopter pilot dressed like a damn cowboy!!

Exactly. Not asking for that. No need for an American Indian wearing traditional headress or a sailor with a parrot on his shoulder or a medic with a bright red jumpsuit. Just show the fact that they were a unit of specialists and therefor are each equipped with there own gear. This movie is based on a kids cartoon and toys after all.

Well you have to remember real CT special forces either wear something that looks like police riot gear, or the skins from Counter strike (all based on the real thing). Or they wear street cloths. And even if they had "their own gear" they'd all either be dressed in black/dark navy for night or urban operations, brown for desert, green for forrest/jungle, white for winter. The only real difference would be the cammo pattern on the fatigues (US, former Soviet, and europe all use a different pattern). Which a camera wouldn't really pic up on, even on HD. NATO standards=all look the same.

Everything you just stated is 100% correct. But this movie is not based on a team of NATO, American, or European special forces, it's GI Joe.

Well technically speaking it would be NATO. Mostly.

After reading the script reviews of this movie, I'd say it sounds fairly bad. But, if its fun action, maybe I'll give it a chance.

The only comment of value I have to give is...Roach I like your avy, makes me wish I hadn't gotten rid of my Guild Of Calamitous Intent avy.

I think ,if the characters were dressed like the toys, it would make them a tad silly looking & hard to take serious.
