A buddy and I were talking the other day about how the show would end and have come to the conclusion that only one of three options would work [*for us]:

Option 1: The group finally establishes a "forever" home where they can live without fear and have a system in place to grow as a society. As the show gets ready to come to a close, the last 10/15 min are a montage of some sort showing the group or better yet their home growing and expanding while the last 60 seconds are dedicated to a flashback before Season 1 Episode 1 showing the pinpoint second the virus was given life. If anyone has seen Contagion, that ending would be so mind blowing!!.. seeing an infected animal butchered by an unsanitary butcher later handled by a chef who interacts with so many people, by that time you already have hundreds infected before day 2 (that being the day Rick enters his coma) I just can't imagine how anyone could say the ending sucked. It gives us (the audience) closure on what started this new world while also letting us know that even tho the group never truly found a cure or an explanation of what started the virus, they finally are at peace. No more running, no more stealing-killing-fear, just a future.

Option 2: A cure is found for stopping the transformation from human to zombie! A scientist or government official discovers a cure in the blood of none other than patient zero - Rick Grimes!!! The show goes back to the first ever transformation: after being shot, he first passes it to a nurse drawing blood, or he coughs on a medic escorting him to the hospital, that nurse/medic later grows what he/she thinks is a fever, eventually dies, is reanimated and it begins!

Option 3: The last episode everyone is dead but (fill in your 2 characters - for me it would be Rick and Carl) and the entire episode is them being overtaken by zombies. They're running the entire episode, running out of ammo, are eventually cornered and out of hope. After years of running they finally give up and are ready to finally die. With one gun and one bullet left they are faced with a choice, neither wants to be eaten alive, Rick looks at Carl, both are crying, camera pans out to outside showing hundreds upon hundreds of zombies, shot is fired, cuts to black. Seems very dark I know, (not my favorite ending) but in a world where there is no cure and until the last human standing dies and reanimates, there is no final end. Some zombies may decay to death but another will take its place eventually. There really is no peace in this world but death.

So there you have it. Our top 3 endings. I know things are constantly changing in the show and by the time it ends the writers will come up with something so great I would have never thought of it but I thought a thread open to discussing what fans would love to see would be fun to read. So what do you guys think? What would you like to see?

Right off the top of my head I can see two endings.

The dark ending is much like yours: Everyone in the group dies. Whoever is left standing (Carl, Daryl, Maggie, Judith, someone we haven't met yet) either commits suicide or dies of old age or infection and becomes the last zombie ever. No other humans are left alive. Zombies have overtaken the last of civilization and once they rot off there are no more zombies because there are no more people.

The light ending: There is a cure found, or an immunity develops naturally and those who are naturally immune die and stay dead. Being bitten isn't a death sentence (at least not from zombisim) and eventually the immunity spreads and the last zombie is killed off either by one of the group (take your pick) or by a descendent of the group at some point in the future (maybe Judith lives and it's her child or someone else's).

And from that point on there are no more zombies left in the world. With either path there will be no more zombies.

Although it does bring up a question that might alter those endings. We've yet to see any animals become zombies. Is it possible for them to reanimate? What about other primates like gorllias or chimpanzees? If a bird or a dog or some other animal can renimate, it will require that entire susceptible species be killed off before the plague ends.

The 2 things that sick out for me are the Judith and animal angles. I've had that discussion before where we envisioned that Judith possesses the key to end this apocalypse because since the show has started she has been the only birth shown which is intriguing but hard to believe there isn't others. I like the idea of immunity developing but that seems soooo far away, how long would the show have to continue to set this up? As far as the animal theory, we can only assume the way animals can't pick up chicken pox and aids and such, this is a disease of the same "manner". I would love to see Judith play a key role tho!

Seems relevant.

Is it safe to say yet that Dark endings are becoming the norm? I think they would be going against the grind by giving us a happy ending full of answers, resolution and hope for the future.

It would be nice to see a positive ending after all the dark and hopelessness the series has endured.

I would. That makes no sense. Whatever the epidemic was, it had to have happened quickly and it had to have happened everywhere all at once. You don't get that from a single source anywhere. The world coming to an end because of one unsanitary butcher is ridiculous. And making Rick Patient Zero would equally be nonsense.

Have you not seen Contagion or Planet of the Apes? If for every one person infected they infect 5 others, by the end of day one your in the hundreds if not thousands... Just because you infect someone in Kansas doesn't mean they are never leaving Kansas. With the whole infected animal/butcher approach (like in Contagion), all it takes is that one butcher to come in contact with 3 people from different parts of the country who will then come in contact with people from other parts of the world on their way back home. Look, all I was insinuating was that if the show ended with a "birth of the virus" type ending, a lot more people would be pleased than upset with the ending IMO. As far as Rick being patient zero, yes that may be a bit far fetched but those are the type of twists shows love! Nonsense... well maybe (to some), but still plausible with the right script.

The group are safe, society has been re-established in some way/is being established and zombies are dying out or a cure has been created. Preferably all of those, but just one would suffice.

The group finds a storage facility containing thousands of nuclear weapons. Negan and his men catch up to them. A fierce clash ensues, resulting in the deaths of everyone except Rick, though he is mortally wounded. Zombies begin to pour into the facility and Rick, realizing their is no hope, activates the bombs and wipes out all life on the planet.

From there, we hear a voice over: "In one of the countless billions of galaxies in the universe, lies a medium-sized star, and one of its satellites, a green and insignificant planet, is now dead."

This show doesn't seem like it will ever come to an end. It's a show without a goal.

Well I'm sure it WILL end someday.

But there will also be a spin-off if I'm not wrong? So will both shows end at the same time, will they both end the same way or will one end happy and one sad.

I'm torn though. A happy ending doesn't really fit the tone of the show on the other hand, wouldn't they deserve a happy ending? I cause it will be a mix of both somehow. For example: Carl dies in the last episode but Rick has a cure and him and Judith survive.

I think a somewhat hopeful, but not "happily ever after" ending would work.

Like they find that some people have started developing an immunity to the infection.

Leave room for some future stuff.

The show should end after season six while it's still hot. I'm not sure it's a good idea to do a spinoff. The group deserves a cure and I'd feel cheated if they all just died. Maybe not so much if Rick sacrificed himself for Carl and Judith. End it on a bittersweet note. They find the cure but most of the cast go out in a blaze if glory.

Please GAWD, no zombie cure.

Rick's death.

Assuming he still uses his Colt Python revolver by the end of it. I imagine Carl having to put him down with it. Much like it has been used to finish off other mortally wounded characters like Dale and Andrea.

Apparently there is an outline for season 11 & 12 !

Which, all things considered, is pretty moronic. Don't plan seven seasons ahead, for **** sake, make this next one as meaningful as possible. The second half of last season was infuriatingly slow-paced and borderline uneventful.

Yeah I hope there is no cure

My ending is basically option 1. But a little darker Rick would become a zombie in the very last shot

I can enjoy slow paced drama , but that second half got to be a bit much for me as well. I don't think the target audience really could appreciate or understand what they would be going for anyway. This show doesn't need filler , twelve seasons , or a prequel. I guess they want to milk it for what it's worth. I hope it ends while the iron is still hot.

They've been through so much, I just can't imagine that would be a satisfying ending.

I enjoyed splitting up the cast for a minute or so, but as soon as we got to the episode that was only Beth and Daryl, I was over the whole thing. It would've been fun for an episode or two, but the whole second half? Nah.

It went on for too long and there was a lack of suspense. There were some good moments , but some of those episodes could have been combined.
