Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Genuinely - I really, really liked it. Maybe I loved it.

Is it perfect? No.
Is it 'safe'? Sure, but was I upset at that? Not at all.
Is there 'too much action'? I never felt that way, at all.
Am I glad this film exists? F**k yes.

I think this is the best performance of Harrison as Indy. There's a lot of meat on the bone for him to play to. There's a melancholy to his character - with glimmers of him enjoying reliving the past to a degree.

He captures his younger self in the opening half-hour, and he plays an older Indy with vulnerability, nuance, and he's giving it his all. I'd even call a couple scenes with him as 'emotional'. Harrison is the soul of this film.

Will those who didn't care for Kingdom dig this film and feel it's a superior film to leave on?

100%.

The film is a blast. Is it as great as Raiders or Crusade? Not a chance. But who the **** cares?

And tonally - it works so well.

The finale is insane, but it's great.
Couldn't have said it better, myself.

Just came back from this, and would say probably 6/10 for me.

Have to say upfront that although I grew up on the original Indiana Jones movies and liked them, I wouldn't say I was a huge fan of them - just that they were fun enjoyable adventure movies, which I have some childhood nostalgic memories of.

The opening set in the 40s at some point during WW2 was a really good action setpiece, but TBH while it was going on, I couldn't help but think it felt like an action setpiece for a different character - by that I mean it felt like something more out of Mission Impossible than Indiana Jones.

The movie overall was pretty good and well-made - but the main reason I'm subtracting points was because of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character. She consistently came across as unlikeable, annoying, and obnoxious, even almost insufferable - and I hesitate to say this because I know it can be a contentious point, but her character honestly came across as some type of woke feminist agenda with a lot of her dialogue and a lot of the things she did (including some of her action scenes). If Mangold had turned her character around to be more likeable and not so obviously "feminist" I would've rated this 8/10.

I'd still put this over KOTCS (5/10 for me), but nowhere as good as anything from the original trilogy.

Just getting from the theater and I loved this movie! It boggles my mind all the negative reviews that came out after the premiere in Cannes

I thought Dial of Destiny felt like back to the basics classic Indy from the first three movies. I big step up from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The action pieces were done very well. The opening 15-20 minutes that took place during WWII kinda felt like watching an opening to a James Bond movie. The de-aging effects were done for the most part but I felt that the dark lightning during those scenes were purposefully put in place to try to make the de-aging less obvious. A couple of moments during that scene that it was kinda difficult to tell what was happening because of the low lighting. Once it jumps to present day though, everything looks good

I thought Phoebe Waller Bridge was an excellent addition and her character kinda grows on you as the movie progresses

Mads Mikkelsen played a sharp villain that had a clear goal and was a constant foul for Indy & Helena. His goons felt like a threat and characters that you just love to hate

For this being the last Indy, I thought it was a pretty fitting sendoff for both the character and for Harrison Ford. He will forever be Indiana Jones!

Seeing Sallah and Marion put a huge smile on my face. It was nice to see them reunite in this movie.

I like Phoebe Waller-Bridge in this. Her character is extremely self-assertive, even more so than Marion, to a point that offends *ahem* a certain type of a man. Is she sometimes disrespectful to Indy? Yes. Is the film disrespectful to him? I don't think so. It's ultimately his film and it's his journey. Helena is at her peak (just like Indiana was in the original trilogy) and that's her main function in the film. I understand why some viewers would like to see a man in his 70s always outperforming and outwitting her, but I don't agree with it.

I did not care for this movie, but Helena was not one of its problems, imo. Her attitude toward Indy made perfect sense to me.

The culture warriors want the movie's reception to be all about her, but I very much doubt a vast majority of the audience see her as anything more than continuing the throughline of women in these movies begun by Karen Allen.

It's not failing at the box office because Phoebe Waller Bridge makes a few poor wisecracks.

the scene where Helena is pleading with Indy to go with her back to 1969, and he's adamant about staying in the past during the battle of Syracuse made me tear up a lot. You can see the desperation from Helena, even as she talks to Archimedes and the genuine emotion Ford brought to that scene felt so raw and real. Easily one of my favorite moments of the entire franchise, and on par with some of the tender moments between indy and his father in the last crusade.

Not an Indiana Jones fan by any stretch but I am a Mangold fan and will probably catch this over the next week. What I seem to be gathering from you Indy fans is that technically, Mangold directs a solid movie but the vibe and spirit of the movie is really off which is where the divisiveness is coming from, do I have that correct?

I wouldn't say its off, I mean, the movie starts off feeling like a spielberg Indy movie. Then it transitions into something different and really emotional/melancholic but it fits at that stage in indys life while also maintaining that Indy feeling. It still feels like Indy, but at the end stages of his life which I totally vibed with. It was the right choice, imo. I think your mileage may vary on the pacing, but I had no issues with it. I actually appreciated the slow moments.

I haven't see the movie yet, but I read spoilers about this scene.

When I read how this scene was solved, it seemed pretty terrible. I really hope it feel better on screen.

Just saw this tonight and WOW was I impressed by how boring it was. I mean jeez.

Full disclosure-- I've never been an Indy fan. Always found them all, including Raiders, dull as hell. The only exception being most of Crusade, thanks to the Ford/Connery chemistry. So factor that into your thoughts on my opinion as you wish. But this one was on a whole other level of dull, sorely lacking narrative drive and the Spielberg pizazz.

Crusade
Raiders, I guess.
Kingdom
Temple (not sure if I've even seen this one all the way through? Think I've always missed a bit toward the bottom of the second act/top of the third).
Dial.

Kind of surprised at some of the reviews on this thread. Some of the usual suspects gave the opinion and rating I expected. However, a few I was expecting to be really harsh on this ended up really liking it or even loving it. Now, I’m not even sure what to think. :funny:

I guess, at the very least, when I get around to watching it, I’ll have a really fun time and get a very solid Harrison Ford performance.

Dear God this movie sucked. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

The only thing of note is that there are two MCU actors almost playing the same characters here.
Actually make that 3. I completely forgot that Mads Mikkelson was in Doctor Strange where he also plays a villain obsessed with time. Then you have Toby Jones as a nerdy scientist in WW2 and Thomas Kretschmann as a Nazi. You could also add Boyd Holbrook as the same henchman from Logan.

Just saw this for the second time and loved it even more than i did the first. I don’t think it’s perfect but it’s a damn fun indy movie that captures the vibe that was really missing from KOTCS. I loved indy’s arc, i loved the villains, i loved the return of old faces and i loved that they really went for it with the final act. It was nuts in the best way. This works perfectly as an epilogue to the original trilogy for me. That casino stand off scene followed by the tuk tuk chase was pure classic indy - the energy was perfect!

Yes.

It is a solidly directed action film by Mangold, but the Indy vibes are way off.

The most it feels like an Indiana Jones move is the first 20-minutes of the film, after that it feels like a generic action adventure with Helena Shaw, where Indy is shown occasionally tagging along. This happens around 40 mins in, after they meet in Tangier and goes on pretty much until the end.

The Spielberg touch is also missing and it really shows this franchise can only be handled by him. It just lacks the energy and pacing he brought. It's dull and it drags quite a lot, particularly in the middle.

I am honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed this. Hearing all the mixed reviews and middling reactions on here my expectations were pretty low going in, but I ended up having a blast with this for the most part.

This was definitely one of Ford's best performances in the franchise and man even at 80 years old I still bought him as a badass even though its pretty obvious he can't do as much in these movies as he used to.

Nothing will ever touch the OG trilogy, but I definitely enjoyed it more than KOTC and I actually like that movie but to me it felt like Ford had more energy/charisma in this movie for some reason.

I also thought Mangold did a really good job with the direction in this during the action sequences despite some of the ropey/shoddy CGI and Greenscreen and Mads/Holbrook were fun villains.

I didn't even hate PWB character which I know the internet has been telling me I'm supposed to for months now but I've seen far more annoying and unlikable characters in movies lately.

I'd take Helena over Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom or that insufferable, obnoxious second Ezra Miller/Barry Allen from The Flash any day of the week but maybe that's just me.

Either way I really enjoyed and was satisfied with the ending.

Glad you enjoyed it and great to hear about Ford going out well - that's what I care about most with this.
