Spider-Man 4 and Hobbit Talk

Entertainment Weekly talked to Spider-Man 3 director Sam Raimi, star Kirsten Dunst, and Sony's President of Production Matt Tolmach about a possible fourth installment and what would happen if Raimi took on The Hobbit.

On the eve of what is expected to be the biggest Spider-Man yet, Entertainment Weekly learns that director Sam Raimi is seriously considering directing The Hobbit—a choice that could potentially leave Spidey 4 without a director and, says Kirsten Dunst, a leading lady.

Raimi's name has been floated in connection with The Hobbit ever since a very public dustup between Peter Jackson and New Line chairman Bob Shaye left the Lord of the Rings prequel without a director. Raimi went on the record for the first time about his potential involvement in the project during an exclusive interview with EW's Steve Daly for the magazine's Summer Preview issue, on stands Friday: "Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don't know what's going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye's films. If Peter didn't want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it—and they were both ok with me picking up the reigns—that would be great. I love the book. It's maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others."

Dunst says she hadn't heard any rumors about Raimi and The Hobbit until EW raised the subject in an interview. She says she can't imagine returning for Part 4 without both her director and her costar: "It's disrespectful to the whole team, I think, to do that. And audiences aren't stupid. It'd be a big flop without me, Tobey, or Sam. That would really not be the smartest move. But they know that already. [Sony chief] Amy Pascal would never do that." Maguire has already expressed his ambivalence about returning for another sequel.

Sony's President of Production Matt Tolmach tells EW that the studio is cautiously optimistic about retaining the team that launched the Spidey franchise so spectacularly: "Listen, we're making Spider-Man 4. Our hope, dream and intention is to do it with Sam. But I don't have a crystal ball."

Spider-Man 3 hits theaters on May 4.

Wow, Dunst is so conceited.

"It'd be a big flop without me, Tobey, or Sam."

Yeah, riiiiight. I think ticket sales would go UP if Kirsten left. Good riddance.

Well if Raimi and the rest don't come back who do you think could replace them? Personally I don't think I want to see a spidey flick without Sam at the helm. Dunst and Tobey, on the other hand, could be replaced IMO.

LMAO! She actually said a Spider-Man film would be a flop without her...ROFL

I know, right?

And it's not like she said "me, Tobey, AND Sam."
No, she said "me, Tobey, OR Sam." implying that any one of the 3 would wreck the franchise.

I don't think Kirsten was being conceited too much. She was just saying that the movies are so great because of the three of them and she's right to think so. I really don't think the ticket sales would go up if she isn't in the next movie either. The ticket sales would probably stay the same because majority of the people come to see the movie for special effects, the director, or Tobey, but that's about it.

All the more reason to ditch them all... if anyone you have yto kkep Raimi

Ehh...I'd keep Tobey too. Changing the male lead mid-series? Not cool.

Changing the female lead when she's a self-proclaimed pothead who looks nothing like the character and is more dead weight than the Titantic? Good idea.

I can't believe she said that. If anything the Spider-man movies would be better without her.

She doesn't bring anything to the MJ character other than her huge moonface, snaggle teeth and annoying screaming.

This would be like Pierce Brosnon saying the Bond movies would flop without him.

Casino Royale made more money than the Brosnan movies for 2 reasons.

1) The film was well executed.

2) People love the character, it doesn't matter if it's a different actor.

A change of pace wouldn't be so bad...so I say bring on a new director, if we must have a Spider-Man 4

I'd have a HARD time getting over losing Tobey and Sam, but Kirsten needs to stop playing games. Bryce Dallas Howard's Gwen would be just as successful (if not moreso) as the leading lady.

Everytime I hear Dunst talk in a interview about spider-man,I hate her a little bit more.

A Spider-Man movie without Kirsten would be a flop?

WOW I hate her even more now. Now I really want another Spidey movie without her so she could shove her ego up her ass

I always thought Raimi would want to make Evil Dead 4 after the spidey movies.Or do we have to wait until Bruce Campbell is 75 years old.

In my opinion,Dunst we can get rid of. Kill off MJ or get someone else,or whatever. However,Raimi and Maguire are THE 2 people I want to keep. Raimi makes these movies great and for me anyway,Tobey IS Spider-man/Peter Parker.

If Spidey 3 does well at the box office....which I'm sure it will.....Sony is going to be hard pressed to stop at 3 films.

Spider-Man has become such a iconic figure that people will go see the film no matter who's playing the role. Like one person said earlier, if the story is good and the action sequences are well done, people are going to come out and see it in the theaters.

Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan have all moved on from the Bond films. Despite that, the latest movie is considered to be one of the best ever and Daniel Craig performance won rave reviews.

Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney left Batman. Yet, the latest movie was arguably the best of the series and Chrisitian Bale was easily the best actor to play Bruce Wayne. Everyone is psyched about the 2008 sequel.

Spider-Man 4 can do just fine without Maguire and Raimi if suitable replacements were found. Dunst comments were laughable considering she's the weakest link in the film and the fact that MJ doesn't even "HAVE" to be in the films.

I'm sure Dunst, Maguire, and even Raimi would like to go onto other things. I can certainly understand why. But, they also realize how big Spider-Man has become. It probably pains them a little to think that the series can go on without them and not miss a beat.

Well said. If we're lucky, Sony will be respectul and patient towards Raimi & Maguire (don't care about Dunst) - give them a little break to do something else. And then when everyone's ready, come back and do 4.

However, if they want to continue and movie forward with Spider-Man 4 without them, I hope they take their time and not rush to find replacements. It'd suck to have Spider-Man 4 suffer the same fate as X-Men 3.
