You know, I think two of the main hurdles that people have had working on mo-cap animation which contribute to the "uncanny valley" syndrome have always been the plasticity of the skin and the eyes.
The thing that would always take me out of a movie would be that I could never really believe that the character was real. This was mainly due to the way everything was lit. Despite how well everything was animated, everything always looked so fake and plastic.
Secondly, one of the features that some animators could never really seem to get down were the eyes. They always look so lifeless in movies. And, again, it takes me out. I don't know why that is. Maybe its the way they're lit, the way the move or something else, but it's just so distracting.
That image, however, takes care of those two problems. The lighting in that shot looks warm and "natural", which gives the everything a more natural and realistic feel. This in turn gives the character a much more realistic and natural skin tone.
And the eyes. My god, those eyes. Whenever I look at those eyes, I don't feel like I'm staring at a dead, lifeless character. I feel like I'm gazing into the eyes of a living, breathing being. It's amazing!
Maybe I'm speaking too soon, but I believe WETA, Spielberg and Jackson have finally overcome "the uncanny valley".
