Trivia

  • First appearance of Bruce Weitz in the DCAU; he later went on to voice gangster Bruno Mannheim on Superman: The Animated Series.
  • Along with Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya, Lock-Up was one of a few original characters created for the DCAU who were incorporated into the mainstream comics continuity. In fact, Lock-Up's incorporation actually preceded that of Harley, the most prominent example of such characters.
  • When Bolton goes berserk during the hearing scene, there is a humorous moment when Bruce Wayne, still in his guise of the indolent playboy, rather than the world's finest unarmed combatant, subdues Bolton by "accidentally" tripping him.
  • This is one of two episodes of Batman: The Animated Series that begins with Batman and Robin escorting the apprehended Scarecrow back to Arkham Asylum. The other one is "Harley's Holiday".
  • The Joker can be heard laughing as Bolton was being led to his cell.
  • When Lock-Up is first seen kidnapping Summer Gleason, his mask completely covers his mouth. However, for the rest of the episode, his mouth is visible.
  • After putting Mayor Hill in his cell, Lock-Up rattles the bars with his nightstick, but the sound effect is missing.

Trivia

  • This episode shares its title with an episode of the 1960s Batman live-action series, also featuring Mr. Freeze.
  • "Oceania" is also the name of the fictional country in George Orwell's novel 1984, and Walker addresses his followers via a giant television screen, in the same manner as that novel's "Big Brother".
  • There are several obvious parallels between Grant Walker and Walt Disney:
    • Walker refers to his theme park designers and builders as his "Visioneers", a reference to Disney's "Imagineers".
    • Disney's brand of entertainment is often criticized as being too fictionalized, and for trying to impose a sort of "make-believe" atmosphere on the rest of the world, while ignoring or cutting out the bad parts of reality. Likewise, Walker dreams of creating a fascist state free of "bad" things while killing the rest of the world.
    • Lastly, there is an urban legend that Disney wanted to be cryonically frozen before his death, in order to continue his work.
  • Outside of Karl Rossum's office, the dynamic duo are assailed by a robotic Bat-Mite. In the DC Comics, Bat-Mite was Batman's biggest fan from another dimension. Near his toy chest are toy versions of Earth-One DC comic book characters Krypto the Superdog, Streaky the Supercat, and Mister Mxyzptlk.
  • Grant Walker does not appear again in the animated series. He does appear in several issues of the comic book Batman: Gotham Adventures, as the "second Mr. Freeze". In those comics, Walker escapes the ice after several years of imprisonment, an experience which drives him insane, and goes on a rampage, including kidnapping a team of Wayne Enterprises scientists commissioned to find a cure for Freeze's condition. In deleted material meant for issues of Batman: Gotham Adventures, Walker is killed by a robotic doppleganger of Mr. Freeze made by Nora Fries's new husband to frame Victor Fries.
  • Walker was voiced by Daniel O'Herlihy, a character actor whose roles included "The Old Man" in the first two Robocop films, the CEO of the corporation that creates Robocop.
  • The name "Rossum" is a reference to the titular character in the 1921 play Rossum's Universal Robots by Karel Čapek, who coined the term "robot" in this play.
  • The reason for such a long gap between episodes featuring Mr. Freeze is that the creators were so proud of "Heart of Ice" that they wanted to leave it as a stand-alone episode.
  • After Walker undergoes the cryogenic treatment, his skin turns pale blue, just like Mr. Freeze. However, when Freeze revolts against Walker and uses his freeze gun to encase Walker in ice, Walker's face reverts to its pre-cryogenic flesh color for a moment.
  • Mr. Freeze makes his first appearance since his introduction in "Heart of Ice". Also, it is revealed in this episode that Nora Fries survived the accident that created him.
  • Karl Rossum reappears from "Heart of Steel" and "His Silicon Soul".

I totally forgot Dan O'Herlihy (aka The Old man from Robocop and Conal Cochran from Halloween III) voiced Grant Walker...that explains a lot.

Second time if you count the shirt rip in "Sideshow", when Bruce was incognito on the train holding Croc at the beginning of the ep.

I totally forgot Dan O'Herlihy (aka The Old man from Robocop and Conal Cochran from Halloween III) voiced Grant Walker...that explains a lot.
Yep perfect casting.

fun fact Walker addresses one of his employees as Mr Johnson (who was a character in the 3 RoboCop films)

Trivia
  • Despite Bruce Wayne's hatred for guns, he is shown in the skeet-shooting scene to be quite proficient with them.
  • Bruce Timm considers this to be the worst episode of the DC Animated Universe.
  • Fox's line, "That's where you belong, old man, at my feet!" is similar to what is later said by Darkseid in the Justice League episode "Twilight", "This is where you belong, Superman, under my heel!"

Love this moment. It was a jaw dropping moment for me when I saw it for the first time as a kid. The moment where Batman was standing in front of Fox after he knocked him off that snowbike was cool as well. I always found the comment Robin made to Batman, when he let him take the controls of the batwing as he took on the Terrible Trio, hilarious. "Sure leave me to steer with a broken arm." Excellent ep. overall.

The animation may have been wonky (very wonky)... but the visuals and the intent were definitely solid.
