After that god-awful failed TV show I can understand why they don't want to go anywhere near the franchise.

Was it the characters fault that show sucked or was it the fault of the people who wrote a s**ty pilot?
I"m gonna go with the latter.
I'll never fathom why WB rejects the idea of a female-led action film, especially with Wonder Woman. It's got something for both genders.
A hot and beautiful actress in possibly revealing armor and/or tights that kicks ass AND a role model or 'icon/symbol' image for the female demographic.
Seriously, what could go wrong??????
If it were as simple as that, then superheroines like Wonder Woman would be the bestselling books. They aren't.
The problem is that women aren't as into superheroes, and men aren't as interested in a female main character as a male one. This is a major contributing factor to why most successful action movies have male protagonists.
Perhaps it's just me, but I'm dying to see a female superhero institute a Grade-A asswhopping. I, personally, find that to be a turn-on. Different strokes, I suppose.
As for the female audience not being into superheroes, there hasn't been a female-based superhero film released... ever. So that data is a bit flawed. I say it's better to know and fail, than not do anything at all and live in nothing but assumptions.
Well there were a couple. Catwoman, Elektra... I'm starting to notice a trend here.
Most female superheroes (and villains) were designed by men to be appealing to men. It's not surprising women aren't particularly interested in them. Wonder Woman was inspired by one guy's bondage fetish.
Why not? Marvel Studios knocked it out of the park with their very first movie.
And so DC with the Batman movies. And Marvel has had their fair share of crappy movies
