Days of Future Past The Ranking the X-Men movies thread

The best bit of the entire series is the first twenty minutes of X1, from Rogue discovering her powers, to Jean in the senate, to Logan cage fighting. And then his meeting with Rogue.

That whole sequence feels so real world, and the characters feel like genuine people. It resembles Unbreakable more than it does any other superhero movie.

In addition, it's only in X1 that Wolverine really does come across as a dangerous, violent badass. From X2 on, he just gets cuddlier and more charming.

1. X2: X-Men United

Hate to be nitpicky, but the subtitle 'X-Men United' was only used for advertising and marketing purposes. Bryan Singer didn't choose it, and he hates that title. The true name of the film is simply 'X2'.

1. Days Of Future Past
2. X2
3. First Class
4. X1
5. The Wolverine
6. X3
7. Wolverine: Origins

I find it hard to rate the films in order, so I'll put it like this;

The X-Men trilogy is X-Men, X2 and Days of Future Past, with First Class as a prelude. These are the essential parts of the series.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Last Stand are second-rate, disposable entries, more popcorn blockbusters than anything else.

The Wolverine is very, very boring indeed.

This isn't hard.

1 - DOFP (because it's everything I've wanted in an X-men movie and more)
2 - X2 (it's been 11 years and it still holds up fantastically)
3 - First Class (pretty basic film, but McAvoy/Fassbender brought some real life to the series)
4 - X1 (hasn't aged too well, but still good for it's time)
5 - The Wolverine (pretty decent action flick)
6 - X3 (no what are you doing? please stop!)
7 - Origins (nooooooooooooo!)

1. First Class -- I just think the Charles and Erik stuff has never been stronger, and Vaughn has the most fun "comic book" tone in the whole series, which mixed well with the '60s go-go vibe of the whole thing. It is so entertaining that I can overlook the weak mutant line-up, and a poor showing for January Jones as trivial.

2. Days of Future Past
3. X2
4. X-Men
5. The Wolverine

....and the less said about The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the better.

Xavier house trained him. It is funny, because it is true.

1) X-M: DoFP (head and shoulders above all X-movies)
2) X2
3) X-M
4) TW
5) X-M:FC
6) X-M:TLS
7) X-MO:W

Days of Future Past is my #1 now followed by X2 and First Class.

X-Men: Days of Future Past - 5/5
X-Men: First Class - 4.5/5
The Wolverine - 4/5
X2: X-Men United - 4/5
X-Men/X-Men: The Last Stand - 3/5
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - 1/5

I don't get the hate for X3. It's obviously not great but I thought it was entertaining (if forgettable) the movie has a couple of nice scenes and the moment when Magento rejects Mystique is one of the most powerful moments in any X-Men movie. I'd keep the movie in my collection for that scene alone. Obviously the worst of the 'true' X-Men movies (wolverine don't count for me) but the outright hate is confusing.

I give it props for actually having a good visual style and action scenes, but the script does SO much wrong. Killing Cyclops like they did, curing Rogue, etc. I understand the hate those plot elements get. But, I do enjoy the action scenes and such a lot, so I get some enjoyment out of the movie if I turn my brain off. I do feel that X3 is a little too hated, but X1 is overrated and is just such a bland movie.

Agreed, X3 has great action and visuals but makes very poor decidions story wise, although I didn't mind Rogue getting cured because anyone in that position with her powers could/should be allowed to decide to take such a cure without backlash. X1 is VERY overrated and bland however it did restart the superhero craze and showed the potential for the genre.

I just got back from DOFP and I'm scoring it one notch under X2 and a tad bit above First Class.

Agree and agree. I put X1 and X3 on the same level as the action in X1 (imho) is rubbish and X3 has great action but fails to do the Phoenix Saga Justice.

Actually the Magneto/Mystique scene is again another failing. Characters just behave terribly out of character with either their previous film development or source material. For example, Wolverine not caring what happens to Rogue is as inconsistent with his previous films as Jean suddenly being in love with Logan.

In the case of Mystique, I could see the comic book Magneto shunning her. But the way they were developed almost a couple in X2 (and pre-DOFP, they had a pretty strong bond in XFC that fed into this narrative), the thought that he would turn his back on her in five seconds just feels like awful, lazy, and unimaginative writing.

I could see Magneto even euthanizing her, putting her out of her "misery," but only after some soul searching. Maybe use her as a martyr for his cause. But treating her as just another thug lost in the line of battle felt weak. The Magneto of DOFP, who does not have nearly the rapport with Mystique that he does in X2, showed more sympathy and compassion for Mystique, and he was trying to kill her!

It just another example of Ratner and company dropping the ball. And it is a shame, because they could have done something creative with that narrative thread.

...I'll say X3 has a better budget than any X-Men movie until DOFP came out. So, Ratner could have a lot more power showcase and spectacle than Singer could in the first two. But in terms of cinematography, X3 looks kind of bland and even high-budget TV-like (think 24). And that is a case with all his movies. I think with less money to show off, Singer could create far more cinematic sequences like the Nightcrawler White House scene, the Wolverine in the mansion scene, or even the entire first 15 minutes of the first movie, which makes up for how clunky the second act is.

Actually the Magneto/Mystique scene is again another failing.

You think that's out of character. Nope, I don't think that is out of character at all and Magneto shows the same character trait in DoFP. I'm not an X-Men guy I'm going by his actions in the movies.
Magento has shown a complete and utter disdain for humanity so why would that suddenly change when a colleague becomes human? Answer; it wouldn't.

I thought X3 had far more visual flair than X1 did. The Alcatraz sequence is very nice from a visual standpoint, for example. Granted, the movie has some VERY head scratching WTF moments. X1 was fairly bland from the camera work all the way down to the music. It just doesn't offer a whole lot. Like I said, I LIKED X1, but even when it first came out, I felt it was a fairly generic action movie.

1. X:FC
By a distance if I'm honest. The character journey of Charles, Eric and Raven, the interactions of Charles and Eric. The conflict of Beast which result in an even worse mutation.
The father/son relationship between Shaw and Eric climaxing with tears streaming down Eric's face as he proclaims that all he is is because of Shaw.
Period set design, cinematography. FC is my favorite X movie by miles.

2. DoFP
Great movie. Didn't move me as much as FC but Raven, Eric and Charles continue their character journey to the back drop of a time travel tale. The movie shines whenever they are on screen.

3. X2
Great movie, great storyline but I'm only really engaged when Charles, Mystique or Magneto are on screen (who continue to be my favorite characters in FC). Was my favorite till the FC series which (for me) blew the OT out of the water.

4. X1
Toyed with placing X3 above this movie as the action in X3 is way better but you have to give X1 props for setting up the sandbox and introducing us to the conflict of Charles and Eric.

5. X3
Much maligned but as I think X1 is overrated I think this movie is underrated. Still clearly the worst of the 'true' X movies.

6. The Wolverine.
Terrible climax that strips away the good will it builds with act 1 and 2 (something MoS suffers with to a lessor extent)

7. X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Rubbish movie with almost no redeeming qualities. Saw this movie once in theatres and have no wish to see it again. The worst of X movies by a country mile.

As am I. See the rest of my post. Magneto in X2 treats Mystique as a lover, and he would at least consider her being forced to take a "cure" as a vile crime against her. At the very least, he would see it as empirical evidence for his "media" campaign against the cure.

Again, in DOFP, a Magneto without decades of history with Mystique, shows more remorse about having to kill her than one who spent many years with her.

1) DOFP (as someone stated all u can want in an X-men movie)
2) FC (most underrated CMB so far the most emotionally gripping for me, the musical score is sooo underrated).

5) X-M
