Who should play Shang-Chi and the other characters?

I wouldn't mind either Ludi or Shum Jr. I'm just stuck on Gao. LOL! He reminds me of Evans and Hemsworth, in that, he has the potential to appeal strongly to men and women alike.
He reminds me of Hemsworth too, but more in that "unknown" sense. The fact that he's a model helps too :cwink:

I’ve not seen Gao in anything, but his look is perfect, I think: elegant, good looking, very much like how I picture Shang-Chi.

Watch him in Legend of the Ancient Sword. It's more of an eccentric action/martial arts movie, (I think it's based on a game) which won't be to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it. And more importantly, he gave off some serious Shang-Chi vibes to me.

I just want some Eternals and Shang-Chi casting. I don't wanna wait until D23, lol

That's in August right? I don't think we'll have to wait that long, at least not for Eternals casting. I think we'll get some announcements come May or June. And then I'm expecting a huge SDCC panel from Marvel where we get loads of new info and some surprise appearances. I'm anxious to know more as well but it'll be worth the wait, I'm sure.

Yeah - late August. I'm sure some will be released by the trades.
I'm not so sure they'll do SDCC if they're doing D23

Oh, I think they will. I remember last year when Feige explained why they weren't doing SDCC, adding that they'd wait to do a panel in 2019. I'm sure there is some stuff they could save for D23, as there is a lot to look forward to.

Who, Lin or Shum? They’re both very good looking. Lin’s got some great instagram game

it's very complicated issue. the best would be chinese who can speak english.
If they make movie just for "American diversity", it really doesn't matter whoever they cast, chinese, korean, japanese, etc. americans will support and make it big for (fake)diversity.
and America clearly is not ready for complicated asian issue. so I don't see them doing it right.
afterall it's marvel, no matter what it won't flop.

(+casting Taiwanese is not great idea too considering their tension but If we don't care china audience. why not)

Yes, it does matter given that there are many Asians and Asian Americans who take issue with casting Korean or Japanese actors to play Chinese characters and vice versa. The casting for Mulan was a huge deal and Disney knew it had to cast Chinese actors, not only because they want the movie to succeed in China but they knew there would be backlash if they got it wrong. Obviously, Shang-Chi isn't on the same level but I would still hope that Marvel would care enough to cast a Chinese actor for the lead role.

Gao is both Chinese and Taiwanese, by the way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel reaches out to Jackie Chan, Jet Li or Chow Yun Fat for a role in Shang Chi

I would hope they get one of these. Well, more so the first two. Chow Yun Fat isn't quite on the same level.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if one or two of them wasn't in this movie.

I've seen more people now suggesting that the guy who plays Bruce Lee in the new Tarantino movie (Mike Moh) should play Shang-Chi. Problem is, he's Korean. Tarantino could get away with that kind of questionable casting but Marvel probably shouldn't try it.

Crap, I just came here to suggest Mike Moh as Shang-Chi. Nevermind then

Yeah, you don't want to get a Korean as Shang Chi. And not Mike Moh anyway. Wasn't he Triton in the Inhumans too?

Moh surname is actually chinesse descendant(like 900 years ago) and extremely rare surname in korea. but yeah.. even tho he loves bruce lee and played him, he's korean american and has Taekwondo background, not chinesse one. but If marvel don't care, he would be best choice. not the steven yeon or henry goudling.

Agree with casting an actor of Chinese descent to avoid controversy if possible.
Recently seen 'Birth of a Dragon' and while movie is quite underwhelming with weak choreography, the lead guy, Philip Ng, I thought he was not bad albeit too cocky as Bruce. He's been around in HK films and on the older side. His skills are decent. Personally, I prob prefer a lesser known with similar skills if not better. There's plenty out there I think that is if they look overseas as opposed to the LA based guys.

Anyway here's some of his work..

I wouldn't mind seeing Ng in this in some capacity, but probably not as Shang-Chi. He's already 41. Birth of a Dragon was not the best, but I did like his performance.

I liked parts of this fight - even though it's pretty inaccurate

Yeah, I like Ng and wouldn't mind seeing him in this movie but he is probably a bit too old to play Shang.

I expect the rumor about Steven Yeun to remain a rumor, as he would be a big miscast, imo.

Yeah I don't know how their casting process works but I do hope they send an agent out to HK or Shanghai for open auditions cuz I really want an unknown, to the western audience at least, with some MA background.
I'm not too enamored by the American actors so far, no disrespect. The plus of an international actor is he'll likely have a natural Chinese accent in speech as opposed to an American born faking one.

Like what I want with Storm, cast a complete unknown for this.
Fill the supporting cast spots with big names if you must. But give the lead to someone new.

Make it a Worldwide open casting event.
That in itself will raise awareness and generate interest in the movie.

Well he doesn't have to be a complete unknown. What if he's a big star in Asian cinema but not known to the West?

And if Bruce Lee were alive and in his early 30s today, wouldn't he be the most ideal choice for Shang Chi just like Samuel L Jackson is used for Nick Fury? But Lee wouldn't be unknown.

You know what might be fun? Bringing back doctor wu from iron man 3’s China only scene. Just to drive home it’s all connected

Also, take this with a grain of salt...

Bruce would be perfect, but unfortunately we don't have reality warping powers... Yet.

I wouldn't mind someone who is known in asian Cinema and not the West, but i would still prefer someone that needs a breakout role. Not a mega star.

I like Yeun, but please no. I can't really picture him in any role in this, let alone as Shang-Chi.

It's from "We got this Covered" they don't know anything, haha.

I have to say though, if they moved the story to Korea that’s kind of an interesting idea. I mean...

1. It’s a market marvel is investing heavily in (they’ve added a few characters from Korea lately)
2. They’ve filmed in sout Korea before (age of ultron, black panther)
3. It’s got amazing talent and new scenery we haven’t seen a million times before
4. If they filmed in China, Japanese people wouldn’t like it and if they filmed outside of China Chinese markets might not like it but Korea seems to be ok with everyone

That won't go down well. Being Chinese is integral to Shang Chi. Forget what the Japanese want. Do they like Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan films?

Maybe make Black Panther Kenyan or Ugandan too. :o

I don't know anything about Shang-Chi other than that he's a martial artist, but would there be a role that Iko Uwais would fit into? Love that dude. He's Indonesian and not Chinese, so he wouldn't be a fit for Shang-Chi himself, but he's an amazing martial artist and a good actor.
