Comics JJ Abrams to write Spider-Man?!

So, this was just announced. Kind of cool, but kind of "meh" Basically, he and his son will be writing a Spider-Man series which will be drawn by Sara Pichelli. I'll give it a shot, as I like Abrams just fine. I mean, Whedon did my favorite X-Men story of the last 20 years, so this could be great.

It's like when Kevin Smith wrote Spider-Man after he did Guardian Devil. I was PUMPED...then I read the third issue...and then 3 years passed before the fourth issue, and it got progressively worse. I don't think I even finished it.

It's like when Kevin Smith wrote Spider-Man after he did Guardian Devil. I was PUMPED...then I read the third issue...and then 3 years passed before the fourth issue, and it got progressively worse. I don't think I even finished it.

I'm a Felicia fan so I did finish it. And it wasn't quite as disappointing to me as most seem to think. Mostly cause I read it all in one sitting. I don't know how but I missed out on it when it was released so I didn't have to wait 3 years. And maybe cause it's a pre-OMD story...for some reason those always read better.

This is the absolute truth. It's not gimmicks that sell, it's quality. Marvel, at least for the time being, has embraced this lesson. We're on a good path people.

LMAO. Exactly. Idk if it's just me, but I'd rather the smaller, more niche stories a la FNSM or LIFE STORY. Ones that have a compelling idea to it. Maybe it's that they don't appeal to wide audiences that they're not done much? (Other than this year).

Dude...I thought TFA was real good, too. Love that flick. It's why I'm excited for this title. Tbh, I haven't even seen MUCH of his work. SUPER 8, STAR TREK, and LOST I all missed out on. I've just seen TFA and MI:3 I think. Which I enjoy.

I think the Big Two in general have a poor track record when it comes to hiring. Basically anyone from Hollywood can come in and get a job no questions asked, and work on whatever they want. Sam Hamm, Lindelof, Heinberg, even Kevin Smith (whose only good comics work was Green Arrow).

The Abrams' mini shouldn't be a big deal in theory, so long as it's not tied to anything else. That way if there's a delay it doesn't screw anything else up. But then I don't particularly care about Spider-Man, as I haven't read the book regularly since JMS was on it. I didn't care for Slott or Brand New Day, and the new writers haven't peaked my interest either.

It's a mini series so it's not tied to ASM.

And it really isn't a big deal but Marvel made it out to be one with an odd countdown. I mean who starts a countdown at 4? Thus there's been a backlash... one because the start at number 4 generated some fan assumptions and two, because Abram's son writing a mini really isn't that noteworthy. I mean, the upcoming book with Conway, Larsen and Bagley imo is way more worthy of that type of announcement.

Imo the current state of Spider-Man comics is in a really good place. And that's coming from someone who dropped the book with OMD. I did keep reading, just not buying. BND was an abject failure imo. But now we've got some good projects ongoing...ASM is solid, FNSM has been great, Life Story might be the series of the year. I'm not trying to change your opinion, that's just my view. And besides Spencer being a talented writer he doesn't mind sharing. Unlike the petulant man-child Slott who couldn't handle anyone else writing Spider-Man, with all these other opportunities for other writers to come in, thankfully Spencer isn't so stupid and we're getting some really awesome stuff.

I will probably end up getting the JJ Spidey#1, but I was looking at the variants...and they are awful. Like...really awful. I retract my previous statement. I see why they are reusing old McFarlane and Larsen panels and making them covers....they need to.

Also, reading what the rumors are about this comic, I may HAVE to get it. It supposedly revolves around

a world where Benjy Parker has grown up and taken over for Peter as Spider-man, meaning they will be doing a future set past the Spider-Girl series. If Mayday is in this, I'm going to scream and cry and smile. My face might explode.

So, we see Mary Jane die, and Peter is left to raise his son, Benjy alone, shirks his responsibilities, and leaved Benjy with Aunt May to basically look after a teenager. And there is no Mayday. Ever.

That's not to say it doesn't probably work as a cool Elseworlds-style take, but we JUST got that (and probably better) with Spider-Man: Life Story. I feel like we're going to be looking at a story where Peter dies and passes on the mantle of Spider-man...which just happened in Spider-Verse (the film), Ultimate Spider-Man about 8 years ago, and Spider-Man: Life Story about 3 weeks ago.

Just...was hoping for more. I'll give it another issue or 2, but this isn't inspiring my confidence too much.

I was already on the fence about getting this and you're not the first person I've heard that's had a blah reaction. So...

I think I'm not gonna pick this up. The premise doesn't intrigue me...but I'll keep tabs on what you guys think to see if things improve.
