Cable Cord Cutters Thread: Sling, Hulu, YouTube TV, Netflix, and more!

Now I feel like a sucker for getting a Roku TV.
You're not a sucker. I feel like everyone starts out their streaming life with Roku or Amazon, as those are the simplest, affordable options. But there comes a time when one becomes serious about their streaming. And when that time comes, Nvidia and Apple TV await, to take you to the next level. :funny:

Having access to HBO Max and Peacock will be interesting.

HBO Max has been a godsend to me during this lockdown. Mainly for the classics. They've got quite a library. Peacock has potential, but its library is relatively anemic at the moment.

Oh Dear Lord....I long for the days of simplicity.

I have a headache tonight.

Do I get HBO Max because I'm overpaying Spectrum to get Showtime and HBO?

All I do is watch stuff I want to watch. I feel so -2 standard deviations below the mean.

If HBO Max costs less than your Showtime/HBO combo, I'd consider it a wise switch (if you have a device that supports the app!), but then, I just generally don't find Showtime to be worth the money anymore. I used a gift card on it for a couple months in May-June, mainly so my dad could use it to finish Homeland, and I basically didn't end up watching anything on there at all. Used to LOVE Showtime, too - Weeds, Dexter, United States of Tara, House of Lies, Penny Dreadful, Shameless, Homeland, The Affair...that was my channel for a good while. Now the only thing they've got that even interests me is that Penny Dreadful spin-off, but that alone's not worth the price, imo.

Plus all those shows are now on other streaming services now.

So I've decided against Channels DVR. I'm just going to deal with the first world problem of popping into two apps for my channels until I get the AirTV dun dun duuun for my new apartment.

Well I did the math which is what is driving me mad by the way, but it is cheaper if I just purchase an outdoor Antenna and AirTV than get a service with locals for a monthly fee. $66 a year for Locast vs a one time charge of a $150 to install an outdoor Antenna and an AirTV box.

Well, I just hope that reception through the AirTV works better for you than it did for me.

Just finished Homeland. What a sad ending. Yeah ST used to be a lot better. I used to like Ray Donovan, but it's kind of gone downhill IMO. I still watch Bill Maher on HBO. Liked Westworld, His Dark Materials, and thought the Perry Mason (while not what I expected), was okay. I'm sure there's some other stuff that I don't remember post GoT.

What IS HBO Max anyway? LOL. I see it on the screen saver sometimes, but don't really know what it provides. How lame is that?

I love watching "someone" chase her tail trying to figure this out.

It's a streaming service like Netflix that let's you stream Warner Media and HBO shows and movies. Think of it as Warner Bros. answer to Disney+.

So you get all HBO plus other stuff? If you have spectrum what do you miss if you have Max?

Pretty much. I think any new stuff on HBO is supposed to be added to it the next day like on Hulu. I don't know about your other question as I never had Spectrum.

I don't know about Spectrum, but if you have access to HBO Go through them (as most people do through their cable providers), then you may already have access to HBO Max. I'd check on that first. Just download the app and see if you can log into Max with your HBO Go credentials.

HBO Max has all the HBO movies/shows, plus original shows that won't be on regular HBO including imports from DCU like Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn (both great, imo). Other HBO Max originals right now include Love Life with Anna Kendrick, the comedy Search Party with Alia Shawkat, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, an Elmo "Late Nite" show and new Looney Tunes cartoons for the kids, and upcoming shows include: a big-budget Green Lantern series, a Dune series from the same team that's making the movie, a sci-fi show from Ridley Scott called Raised by Wolves, a crime drama called Tokyo Vice, a post-apocalyptic show called Station Eleven, a DC superhero/sci-fi anthology show called Strange Adventures (as in Adam Strange), a Justice League Dark show from JJ Abrams, and a Gotham Central-esque series that's a spin-off of The Batman from Matt Reeves and Terrence Winter. There are several others too that I can't be bothered with, lol. Here's a list. Of course the dreaded Snyder Cut is in there too next year.

But the main appeal of HBO Max for me right now is their library. TCM and Criterion have a whole section of classics there that is just glorious. And of course there's a DC hub for various DC movies and TV shows. Cartoon Network/Adult Swim have their own section of shows, as does Studio Ghibli and Crunchroll for anime movies and shows, and of course they have a lot of popular old (mostly Warner Bros, BBC and Turner) TV shows that you can't get on regular HBO, like Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Big Bang Theory, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Pride & Prejudice (BBC mini-series), Emma (BBC mini-series), The OC, The Flintstones, South Park, The Office (UK), The Thick of It, Whitechapel, The Closer, Major Crimes, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Looney Tunes, Popeye, Johnny Quest, The Jetsons and a bunch of other Hanna-Barbera cartoons, and some of the newer CW shows that don't fall under their Netflix deal (so like Batwoman, Nancy Drew, Katy Keene, etc).

You guys would be disappointed in me. Comcast offered to lower my bill so I stayed with them. :ninja:

JK, kvz. I've been there. I cut the cord 2 years later than I'd originally planned to thanks to those price cuts.

Greetings from Moscow.
What are they offering!

Same as my current plan (internet, phone, and the 2nd to the highest plan - the one with all the channels I want plus HBO) but it’s just almost just $200 with the tax and fees already included. My dad is adamant that I keep my landline. He refuses to contact me elsewhere and he thinks it’s safer to always have a landline. I was paying about $230 before. Based on my calculations, it would’ve been almost the same ($180-190ish) if I got the internet, phone, plus YouTube TV and HBO Max anyway. And I was feeling too lazy to research some more. I know, I know, I’m terrible... :p I hated myself for it. :p Maybe in two years I’ll be more prepared...

You'll be back. :argh:

But for the time being have you tried AT&T TV Now.

I have no clue how the interface is, but their channel lineup for $55 isn't bad and is comparable to basic cable.
