A bit disappointed it is turn-based unlike real-time with pause like the previous two in the series. Also, so far it looks like a reskinned Divinity: OS 2 but it's not surprising considering it's from the same developer and is using the same engine.

Huge fan of BG2, this looks and feels nothing like it. I wouldn't even recognize it as a D&D game if it didn't have the title BG3. Disappointment.

I think it looks fantastic. My only concern is the down/death system. It sounds brutal.

Looks like they've listened to the complaints about the past tense during dialogues.

Yeah, I am really upset about the decision to make it turn-based combat. They completely lost me with that decision. It should be real-time like the other BG games and Bioware/Black Isle D&D games.

16 classes and 6 races available in the Early Access:

The character creator looks neat, too!

Neat, will this be avaliable for Consoles too?
Would be sweet.

Larian said no for current-gen consoles, but I think they'll eventually port to next-gen in a few years.

Divinity Original Sin 2 came out one year on PS4/XB1 after PC release (two years for Switch).

The graphics and the style looks great, I just wish they would add a real time combat option rather than making the game strictly turn-based. Baldur's Gate and BioWare's Infinity Engine invented the Western real-time combat RPG. Going Japanese-style turn-based combat is blasphemy and I have no intention of playing it. I hate turn-based RPGs.

Welp, I did something against my principles: I bought the Early Access.

The hype for this game and my love of the franchise were too big to resist... Sure, I was disappointed with the turn-based combat but I passed the Denial stage and been on the Acceptance stage for some time now. I bought the game on GOG and they have a 30-day refund policy so if there's anything I can get my full money back.

Took a couple of hours to go through the available classes and races last night. Behold my beautiful ginger dwarf!

Hehe sexy.
Were not GB 1&2 turn base too, were they ? I played them back, my memory could be wrong.

They were real-time with pause (RTwP) similarly to Icewind Dale and Dragon Age Origins. Sure if you paused enough to micro-manage your party and study the battle field, you could say it's "turn-based".

Having to wait for the entire enemy group to go before anyone in your party could attack again was tedious in Divinity. There was no opportunity for strategy in the moment. Its better if a protagonist attacks, then an enemy, then a protagonist etc. It allows the player to actually respond to each attack action.

Somewhat ironic that BioWare has nothing to do with this game considering the utter ****show the company is these days. BioWare is a dead entity at this point.

I did the same today and played for couple of hours. To be fair, while it doesn't feel like BG1-2, it has it's own incredible charm. Fantastic art direction (something that wasn't in Divinity games, imo) and old school gameplay - I needed something like this after Cyberpunk debacle. It's a true RPG through and through. Even silent protagonist is old school AF.

Now it's probably my most anticipated release. I hope it doesn't stay too long in EA and released somewhere next year.

Patch 6 released yesterday with a new area and the Sorcerer class.

Visually, game keeps getting better since I've last played a couple of months ago (Patch 4 I believe). I'll probably wait for another update or two before jumping back into it again. Can't wait for the full release whenever that comes out.

From hot vampire to hot demon... :hmr:

The release got bumped up a month (away from Starfield) so this finally gets released next week. 20 years waiting...

Larian also improved the character creator. Dragonborn and half-orc looking sexy AF!

Okay, you and Chris Pine have convinced me to buy this against my better judgment and longstanding distaste for turn-based combat. If it fails to live up to my expectations, I am going to personally hold you responsible. :o

It reached a peak of 593k concurrent players on Steam today. Not bad for a niche, turn-based CRPG sequel in a 23-year-old dormant series. :o Seriously, congrats to Larian for their success!

I spent like two hours last night in the character creator. Larian really did a fantastic work with the dragonborn.

As for my playable character, it'll be a half-orc barbarian with the following look (minor tweaks TBD):

Hopefully you'll like the story, characters, role play, DnD mechanics and whatnot. Enjoy your epic adventure, buddy!

Yeah, the story, characters, DnD mechanics, etc. look very promising and convinced me to give this a try even if I wish they had kept the combat more like the originals.

The original two are all-time favourites of mine, so Larian has a bit of a high bar to reach for me.

I'm a little overwhelmed currently, but my experience so far can only be summed up with:

It is going to take a while for me to break free of 20 years of CRPG programming and fully engage my creativity, but they seriously brought the pen and paper DnD experience to the digital world. I am stunned.

Glad you've been enjoying the game! BG1/BG2 are also some of my faves but having played the early access since 2020, I had no doubt Larian would deliver again. You are right, it is basically a DnD simulator.

In a way, this is a spiritual successor to Dragon Age Origins and the latter is a spiritual successor to the first two BG games. So, it's a full circle? :D

What class and race did you go with?

This is totally my type of game. I need to sort out all my outside work work so I can focus on this and Starfield.

Yeah, I was very skeptical because Larian was not in any related to Bioware and I was worried about a mismatch like Bethesda taking over the Fallout rights and totally missing the spirit and soul of the series. There were also those horrible Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance hack and slash games that Hasbro made for the early 2000s consoles which tried to cash in on the series name. So I think it is fair to say there were a lot of reasons to be skeptical.

My character is very much the same core build as my classic BG character. I basically do an Aragorn-ripoff Ranger character. Half-Elven Noble, Ranger Knight, Hunter subclass, with Longsword duelling combat style and longbowe for ranged combat. I wish I had realized the Dark Urge was a custom origin and not a Companion origin like the others.
It would have been fun time to play as a Bhaalspawn again.

I get the impression that this game in more like the original BG games where you don't keep every possible companion in your camp. I mean there are companions who are much more combative with each other than say the Dragon Age games or other more recent RPGs. Other than missing their content, is there any harm in just dismissing characters you don't like?

I am hoping to do a Good guy playthrough and I feel like keeping Astarion, Lae'Zel, etc. in my party doesn't really fit with what I'm going for with my group.
