Wonder Woman 1984 General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

It wouldn't even bother me if the Amazon spin-off doesn't happen. The whole spin-off that leads into WW3 was stuff that Geoff Johns & Patty came up with. Scrap it all and come up with something new for WW3. Geoff Johns is a great comic book writer, but he has been a cancer to DC films.

Should Warner Bros. decide to move forward with the Wonder Woman spinoff, it will be interesting to see how it shapes up.

Jenkins not directing the Amazon spinoff will give someone else the opportunity to join the DC Extended Universe and take a turn expanding the Wonder Woman franchise. It will even be fascinating to see if the spinoff is made for a theatrical release or if WB attempts to convince Jenkins to put the spinoff on HBO Max.

The studio still has to greenlight Wonder Woman's Amazon spinoff before we'll know for sure, but it would be quite surprising at this stage if WB and DC suddenly decide they want less content revolved around their most universally beloved DCEU character

I would rather let Allan Heinberg take charge of story writing for Amazon spinoff and WW3.

I dont even know why Geoff has much to do with WW, the most he's done with the character is when hew as in charge of JL and he didnt do much then apart from Darkseid War.

Heinberg, Gail Simone, Perez all should be consulted more than Johns.

Goeff Johns cannot write Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman. His better writing was for Green Lantern and Aquaman comics, even then, those were long time ago.

Now, he's involved in several CW shows, and I think he's writing is decent for Stargirl but he's all wrong for Wonder Woman, keep him away.

WW84's vfx effects were not great and the stunt choreography was bad too, they need to get new people for next movie, and I fear Patty would be busy with her Star Wars movie for next two years.

At least this gives them some time to get the story right, I hope WB learn something from feedback of fans/ general audience.

Earliest we'd get WW3 would be 2024? Gal is currently pregnant, Patty is directing Star Wars, takes at least 6-8 months to film the movie and do VFX

Not surprised this movie failed at the box office. It was really bad.

But it didnt fail though. It performed well for being released in the middle of the pandemic when there was noone getting vaccines.

i didn't think this movie was awful but i feel like i could've been better. i wasn't as invested in the villain as i thought i should be, no matter how charismatic i found the actor. i would've liked to see more of Barbara's transition into Cheetah, not just physically, but in personality. we only got a taste, i feel like.

Wow, man time flies. This thing is already back on HBO Max as of today.I feel like it was just yesterday it was Christmas and I was watching this....to crushing disappointment.

But I do kinda wanna rewatch it again and see if my opinion softens of it.

I watched it 5 times when it came out lol and ill likely watch it again even though I wasnt head over heels in love with it like I thought I'd be.

there are parts of the film that i really liked. there are parts i did not.
what i'm curious of is how that the ending of it was so optimistic, but when we see Diana again in JL or BvsS or whatever, she's basically a recluse again.
are we going to find out why she shut herself back off again? did i miss that part?

Well, she did appear as WW in BvS, when the Doomsday was running loose (after watching the news on TV).

But, yeah, we have to assume that she did become recluse again, after the events of WW84, maybe she learned to stay inconspicuous as the experience was not very positive ?

WW being a more public figure — and even learning to fly — would be entirely legitimate progressions of the character if WW84 had taken place in a contemporary (post JL) world. But seemingly, Jenkins thought the year 1984 was intrinsically vital to the narrative. Therefore, it was no great loss if this period setting was at odds with (the essentially defunct) DCEU continuity.

However… beyond the nostalgia and a few fashion sight gags, I never felt that the 80s milieu was particularly relevant...

The reason Patty gave for setting the movie in 1984 was it was a period of indulgence, when there was emphasis on consumerism, greediness.
Welcome to the future. Life is good, but it can be better. And why shouldn’t it be? Everything we’ve ever dreamed about is right at our fingertips. — Maxwell Lord
The opening of the movie shows how people in '84 were happy with that whole philosophy, that was prevalent then.

Well… I lived through the 80s. And I don't remember being that happy, greedy or indulgent. :cwink:

In any case... I think you could transpose the Dreamstone/wishes conceit to a “crisis of meaning” time period (say, the Trump years) and claim a similar thematic relevance. I.e., the plot (such as it is) would still work. And — bonus — the continuity discrepancies would vanish.

Patty was also trying to channel Lynda Carter and Donner Superman movies, which was additional reason why the movie was set in 1984.

One thing that bothered me was how did Steve Trevor managed to fly modern fighter jet, it would have been better if there was some outdoor exhibition showcasing various World War 1 and World War 2 planes, where some of those were in working condition, to be flown in some Air show next day. (Like how people hold Vintage Car rallies)

Now, I can believe Steve Trevor flying a WW2 plane as some of those single engine WW2 planes were not that much different than WW1 planes (only difference was of metallic body, higher hp engine, more fuel, more flying range and better guns)

Bring Allan Heinberg back for Wonder Woman 3.

Allan Heinberg, who was the writer of the first Wonder Woman movie (his script was used mostly unaltered after Patty Jenkins joined the project.)

Well, some reports say Jenkins and Johns did substantial rewrites on Wonder Woman. But by WGA rules, the effort wasn’t substantial enough to earn either one an official writer’s credit. Bottom line: the collaborative nature of the process and the legalistic nature of assigning on-screen credit makes it difficult, from the outside, to determine who should get the praise (or blame) as the main story “author.” Hypothetically, Heinberg’s script might have been crap; and hypothetically, J&J might have polished it into gold. However, without access to the various drafts, it’s difficult to know who did what. Given how WW84 turned out :ebr:..., it’s tempting to retroactively diminish J&J’s work on WW and elevate Heinberg. But this would be speculation. It’s entirely possible that J&J were the saviors of the first movie and (for whatever reasons) stumbled with the second.
