The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

He doesn't need to be black to do that, infact, skin color for anyone fighting injustices has nothing to do with it.

1938, when superman was created, just how and why he was created and what was the world like at the time will intrigue and shock some people...

Two immigrant kids, of jewish faith, in America, witness a father shot and killed... look at Kal El's features, the imagery of faith in the lore...

that Is as needed and relevant as wakanda is to BP.

I didnt say he had to be black either, but if we're talking about a black Superman im using that context to explain What I think would work well

so a black superman would be great to focus on racial oppression, got it.

Where are you reading that? Thats not at All what I said.

I said a black Superman would be interesting to explore racial injustice.

My reasoning being a Black Superman seeing and experiencing racism would be looked at by African American groups as a savior. But Superman is supposed to stand for more than just one group, so that divide between What certain people would expect Superman to be and What he actually should be would create a nice internal conflict.

Fight for those who love me and alienate the others, or fight for people who love and hate me but risk pushing away both sides.

He can obviously still have internal conflict if he is white or any other race but since we're talking about a Superman film Thats going to have a black lead it would add an extra layer of nuance to him as a character. Especially if we keep Martha and Jonathan white and he is still raised in Kansas around people who may not accept him the same way if he was white.

I said a year or so back, that the reason I loved Dean Cain's casting so much is because he looked all American, of this era, he acted like a farm boy, however, he didn't look like his parents at all and he had something about him that subtly stands out.. his asian heritage. It's subtle but it's there... he legit looks like an adopted child for that family and raised as one of them, however it wasn't the basis of the show.

We then see him stand up for people, issues and communities and you see a superman for the people.

Writing is key, not changing the colour of the actors skin.

Sure, make Clark Kent black, hispanic, asian, jewish, but don't make it the focus.

Jim Caviezel-Superman
Karen Gillan- Lois
Topher Grace- Jimmy
Jon Voight-Perry
Jane Seymour- Martha
Laurence Fishburne-Brainiac
Emily Browning-Super girl
Dirk Benedict-Lex

I'd be fine with that type of casting without race being the focus, though alot of fanboys would still complain ,since it's clear that alot of fans don't want Clark to be any other race but White regardless of how its done , what contexts it's done, or what the story is.

When it comes down to it, that's what alot of this debate is about. The "it's too PC and woke" stuff is code for basically saying " I don't want non whites in the role".

So even if the they cast a Black or Latin actor as Clark without his race being the central focus of that version , you'd still have alot of fans who would have been outraged by the idea of a Black, Latin ,Asian etc Superman, just like you had fans upset about a Black Perry in MOS, a Black Jimmy Olsen in Supergirl, and a Latina Supergirl and Batgirl.

There are fans who just can't deal with that type of change, even if the race of the character isn't an issue in the film or show.

I'd be for them just casting a Black Clark, a Latina Lois, an Asian Jimmy, and a White Lex for example ,without their race being an issue in the story, but alot of fans would still be outraged at the fact that you would make any those characters non white.

Alot of fans just can't deal with it or accept those kinds of castings.

yup, luckily they aren't the majority of fans...

Honestly, I think keeping Henry Cavill while having another director could work because Henry Cavill was, in my opinion, never responsible of anything bad. On the contrary, I felt it was a very good casting and that he could / would go so far with it.
I think of it like the James Bond franchise. An actor is doing the role for some time, whoever the directors are, then they change. It works fine for me and bring a slight stability that I feel we need in order to adapt and care for a character.

That being said, I can't understand why DC is not promoting and developping an animated film based on TimBurton's cancelled film ! The actors are still alive and could give their voice.
Actually, I'm even more inclined to watch those DTV films if they were not adaptatons from things I already read and know.
I'm thinking about Georges Miller JL, Darren Aronofsky's Batman, etc, etc... they are all still alive and I have some ideas on how to make it adapted.

Flashpoint has the potential to do just this.
Which I think it will.... but reveal a new actor..... that's why Cavill has been non existent - imagine a scene where superman shows up but it's not Cavill superman... it could be MBJ superman, could be anyone they kept under wraps.

If it's the MBJ Superman, that's not Kal-El though, it's someone else, right? I can't remember the name now.

Needless to say, I can't imagine they've cast a Supergirl not to make further use of her, and I can't imagine there's not going to be a third Bruce Wayne on the scene when this all wraps. We know (or can resonably conclude) that Affleck is out, and if WB are looking ahead to future JL installments, which they should be (at some point) they're going to need a Batman that is young(ish) and capable; Keaton probably isn't, at least not long term. I'm not seeing them connect with Patterson though, that'll be it's own thing.

What does ... concern(?) me is where the Flashpoint film will leave the other heroes like Shazam, Aquaman, Wonder Woman etc, and whether their (current) stories will exist unchanged, or whether they'll go forward a different route with them. As they each stand, especially as stand-alone features, they can all exist with the same setup as pre and post Flashpoint. It's only really the JL elements that'll be changed.

I'm aware this is taking away from the Superman topic, sorry about that, but it's kinda all connected...

I hear you.

From what I can make out, the DCEU is moving forward with Keaton as the mentor for a Batgirl maybe even a batman beyond type scenario.

We will have Keaton Bruce, Super girl, Batgirl, Flash, Shazam, AM, WW and a green lantern tv show.

Flashpoint will retcon a lot - the universe/timelines can merge as one and create a new time line where Batfleck never existed, or a pocket universe is made esp for Batfleck to live as bruce with his dad.

Which alters superman's history and it could be there was always a super girl never a superman.

I can see the DCEU lasting another 5 years and then I can see 'The Batman' spawning off movies - what would superman look like in that world and basically they will try it again.

Superman- James Wolk
Lois Lane- Allison Williams
Lex Luther- Peter Sarsgaard
Perry White- Andy García
Jimmy Olsen- Karan Brar
Cat Grant- Emilie de Ravin
Ron Troupe- Lakeith Stanfield
Steve Lombard- Sean William Scott
John Corben/ Metallo- Ben Foster
Bruno Mannheim- Demián Bichir
Maggie Sawyer- Amy Ryan
Dan Turpin- Michael Chiklis
Brainiac- Adam Driver

He's a pretty, pretty boy. :atp:

James Wolk needs to be in more things. He’s a seriously underrated actor

I think I would prefer a female playing Brainiac. Amanda Collin plays a character similar to Brainiac in Raised by Wolves. She’d be great in the role.
