Box Office 2021

SATURDAY PM UPDATE: As we told you, once an event film like this catches fire and has momentum, there’s no stopping it, and tonight industry estimates are pegging Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home with a $72M-$74M Saturday, -40% from the 2nd best opening day ever of $121.5M, which will put the Tom Holland-Zendaya-Benedict Cumberbatch movie at $253M+. That’s not only the biggest box office opening Sony has ever seen in its history, but a record domestic debut for December, and the third best of all-time, taking out 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens which opened to $247.966M. As Nancy reported earlier today, this Spidey is heading to a $500M+ global opening, and that’s without China.

I was supposed to see Spider-Man yesterday in a packed theater but ended up going to the ER early Saturday morning for an infection. Had to cancel the tickets (thankfully got a refund). I’m getting better now but still got to wait a while before I’m ready to go back to the theater.

No.1 worldwide on the next list

Didn't GVK already do this back in March?
GVK definitely did well, especially worldwide and it was the first sign that heart of moviegoing was beat alive and strong, but it was also a dual streaming release and only did decent for a flick released under those circumstances. While NWH was a theatrical exclusive and the first true “event” movie we’ve gotten since 2019 that really drove audience attendance and broke records. Movies performing like NWH are really what really keep theaters alive and well. For the first time it really felt like a movie was performing around the peak of box office levels pre-pandemic. Notably it’s the first pandemic film to have a hundred million dollar opening weekend and join the billon dollar club. That’s a more than strong sign that moviegoing is long from dead.

There were lots of signs throughout the year that theatregoing was still extremely viable; F9, Queit Place II, Shang-Chi, Venom, No Time to Die, Ghostbusters Afterlife, hell even House of Gucci ended up doing pretty well. But yeah, Spider-Man is doing pre-pandemic levels box office.

House of Gucci and Ghostbusters didn’t do that well if you ask me. There are exceptions but I think only big IP names will make it past 300M worldwide going forward. People only care about blockbusters now and other movies will unfortunately underperform.
