Box Office 2023

If the top three worldwide remains the same when all is said and done it will be the first time since 2001 none of three is a sequel. :)
Nice for a change. Outside of CBMs, looks like some of the big sequels like MI, Fast and Indy also didn’t do too well. I certainly had no idea any of those 3 would be so big.

Wooh. After that disastrous 78.1% second weekend drop, that 33% for the Marvels looks good, so the Thanksgiving probably benefited it a lot.

Lol, The Marvels marginally made it to the top 10.

It doesn't look encouraging when only 7 films have crossed the $200 million mark in North America. Pre-pandemic, boX office numbers were just getting bigger and bigger.

I'm curious who will be the few films that will gross over $200 million neXt year in North America. I can only think of Deadpool, Inside Out 2 and maybe Wicked right now.

I mean, those inflated box office results were getting ridiculous, it was never going to last, IMO, even without the COVID crash. Next year, I'd say Dune, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Joker also have strong shots. Other ones I could see breaking big are Mickey 17, Furiosa, The Fall Guy, Garfield. Hopefully some surprises like Oppenheimer.

I take this is a 4-Day estimate, including Christmas Day? Interesting to see how it all pans out and where the full week ends up. I love seeing The Color Purple open big, decent start for Anyone But You, and am surprised that Iron Claw isn't tracking higher. Too sad for the holidays, maybe?

BoX office definitely got hit by the pandemic. Aside from few boX office juggernauts from time to time, I think more and more people are just waiting for a lot of these films to come out on NetfliX, Prime or Disney+.

Its crazy how Ant-Man 3 ends up in a lot of "boX office flops of 2023" end of year lists, yet its one of the only 7 films in North America to hit the $200 million mark. Worldwide, remove the Chinese films, its the 10th highest grossing film of the year.

The line up for 2024 looks dry, that I'm at the "i believe it when i see it" to those films you've mentioned.

@ aren't you doing a box office thread for 2024? As expected last year, the box office look quite dry in 2024, especially in the month of May, which is usually one of the biggest months of the year when it comes to moviegoing. Weird how, only Planet of the Apes only earned over $50 million in North America in its opening weekend and the rest are below $40 million. I shouldn't be surprised by looking at the line up but it still feels a bit surreal. Next year's numbers should be better with Captain America and Mission Impossible.

I skipped doing one for 2024 mainly because it started to get a bit tiresome to be honest after doing it for several years. And 2024 not looking all that exciting just added to the feeling that it would be a good time to stop.

Well I miss seeing you doing your box office updates, and the threads you've made were the perfect place to discuss the box office numbers, as they can easily get lost in other threads.

Just seeingmy posts last year in this thread, like I definitely knew we were heading for a quiet 2024 and a concerning year at the box office.
