Christian Bale is Gorr the God Butcher!

For those that are interested in the character of Gorr and aren't familiarized with him or the comics he was featured in, here's an easy way to learn more about the character, his relation to Thor and likely what we could expect from him in TLT. Now knowing Bale is portraying the character i guess it's easier to picture what he could do with a meaty and menacing role like this.

There are a few comics in which Gorr is featured. Comics by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic.
- Thor: God of Thunder
- King Thor

Gorr (God Butcher) (Earth-616)

Hopefully Waititi does a lot better job with Gorr than Taylor did with Malekith and gives Bale a meaty and menacing role to chew on.

I, frankly, would assume the role is going to be straight up comedic and more or less a parody of the comics. Though I would love it if the rest of the film is a wacky comedy and Gorr is still a straight up horrific monster played totally straight, not sure if that's Taika's sensibility at all though.

That first assumption is ridiculous and the proof is in the pudding.
Was Hela's role in Ragnarok "straight up comedic and more or less a parody of the comics"? The straight answer is... No! Hela was all business, ruthless, menacing, powerful, badass, sexy and cool. Hela's humor was almost non-existent apart from some snarky remarks.

Go figure. That bold description is basically Ragnarok in a nutshell. Also most great sequels where kind of a revamp of the original and i can see that happening with TLT.

You know what? You're correct. Hela actually somewhat slipped my mind.

If anything i'm even more pumped to see what they do with Bale's Gorr after what they delivered with Blanchett's Hela. Her design was spot on and persona was basically a carbon copy from the comics. Oh and i think i speak for the world when i say we need more of her in the MCU. I mean come on...

Yes, they surpassed my expectations with Hela and the character was very well designed. I’m very optimistic about the design for Gorr after that.

Hela had plenty of wit but I wouldn’t say she was comedic, and managed to be very intimidating. Hopefully Gorr is played straighter than the rest.

Bale has talked about wanting to do a comedy for a while.

I could see Bale wanting to play Gorr since he is a character with some depth. He is not a cookie cutter villain.

I'm kind of curious to find out on what sold Christian on this role. I mean for him to sign onto another comic book role after Batman is pretty big imho.
It can only be a good sign that someone of his calibre saw the role and decided it was good enough to put his name to.

Definitely the possibility of working with Taika.

Also I don’t think is that hard to be sold on Gorr either, just looking at those comics he’s featured in would be enough to get someone interested. Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic created something very special. The art on those pages is so striking.

The fact that this movie seems to be borrowing so heavily from Aaron's work does make me wonder: should he get a cameo like Ed Brubaker did in TWS and Jim Starlin did in Endgame?

Yeah, Hela was an even nastier villain than Thanos - she was terrific, slinky and smooth and scary, but you could kind of see where she was coming from. Having her as a one shot villain is a terrible waste, but Taika did such a great job with her that it was worth it.

As for Bale, he's one of the greatest actors of his generation. He could really do something with Gorr - interestingly Bale doesn't do comedy really, so it will be interesting to see how they play the character. We hope it won't be another Malekith, but instead maybe a bit of Patrick Bateman.

I just looked up how Gorr looks like in comics out of curiosity (I know... sorry, not a comics fan here), and it seems Bale will have to have heavy makeup to make him unrecognizable to be comic accurate. I thought it could be difficult for him to act and a waste of casting a big name without his face showing? At least for Thanos there are still traces of Brolin and you can see how he emotes. Or are they going to tweak a bit how Gorr will look in the move but risks the wrath of comic fans? It would be interesting to see how it turns out in any case....

It's virtually guaranteed that Gorr will be mo-capped, just like Thanos was.

If he’s up for it then Gorr can be as good as Hela. It will be great to get 2 top Thor villains in a row after the disappointment of Malekith.

With 3 great villains out of 4 (Loki, Hela and Gorr), Thor would honestly have a better record than either Iron Man or Cap's movies when it comes to villains, since none of Tony's bads were really amazing, and Zemo was the only one of Cap's villains that I really enjoyed.

Just a shame that Malekith let the side down as I was looking forward to seeing him and the dark elves. It could have been a full house but if Bale-Gorr reaches his potential we’ll still have 3 of the top villains in the MCU. Maybe Beta Ray Bill can contribute too when he finally gets a shot.
