Dwayne Johnson to go on a Rampage

Wow... not good numbers. I was hoping for something like $350 million WW.
They aren't bad numbers either. I think they could have reached 350 had Infinity War not moved itself up to this Friday and given it more breathing room and it still might eventually hit 350 before the run ends.

The box Office has been updated with China's numbers. I think it's crossed $300m now. Anything else now is a bonus with IW out this weekend.

Just came back from this, and as someone who actually played the arcade game when I was a kid, I was mildly disappointed that the animals didn't revert to human form at any point. That might've been added an interesting angle.

Pretty entertaining movie overall, and although most of the human characters were cliche, they were the fun sort of cliche so it wasn't that bad. And the way Malin Akerman and her brother got offed was pretty damn entertaining, I mean wow, what a way to go for Malin Akerman (which had my audience rolling), and the brother's was a good chuckle too, especially with Jeffrey Dean Morgan's line afterwards.

My only complaint, which is sort of a nitpick, was that the animals weren't large enough. George was sort of puny compared to Ralph, who in turn was noticeably smaller than Lizzie. Also, while the destruction porn was awesome, I was a bit disappointed that we didn't see more of all 3 of them side-swiping into buildings and intentionally causing them to crumble, to sort of echo the gameplay mechanics that the game had. And I don't get why both Ralph and Lizzie were [blackout]killed off either, it could've been better if they were kept alive for a potential sequel[/blackout]. But it was a decent flick and I wouldn't mind a sequel if they do end up making one.

I saw Rampage last weekend but totally forgot to post my thoughts on it. It's surprising since I absolutely loved this. Rampage is an awesome monster movie. All I wanted to see was colossal monsters wrecking s**t up on the big screen and this one delivered in spades.

The Rock was his usual charismatic self here but JDM as Agent Russell was the MVP as far as the cast is concerned. He was frikkin hilarious.

The action here is superb but I do think that the actual monster fights in Godzilla (2014) & K:SI were much better than this one. I thought the fight scenes in those (Godzilla vs MUTOs & Kong vs SkullCrawlers) were more epic and visceral. Those felt more more personal and intense. The fight between Kong and the Ramarak is one of the most brutal and intense fights I have ever seen in big budget blockbusters. I still really liked the non-stop destruction porn even tho I didn't think the George vs Ralph or George vs Lizzie fights lived up-to those high standards set by the MonsterVerse.

I was actually surprised with how much it moved me. The bond between Davis and George was particularly well executed. I immediately bought into their friendship. [BLACKOUT]I was absolutely gutted when it was shown that George has died. I couldn't believe it actually happened and I shed tears for a few moments. It was such a sad feeling. So I was really very happy when he was shown to be alive. That was a huge relief.[/BLACKOUT] The movie did an excellent job to make me care about George and I wasn't expecting that.

This movie is very, very stupid. I also think it may have been written by Lotso Cliches. I am not asking for fine art with a movie like this, but did the script have to be so copy/paste?

Even tho I absolutely loved the movie, I'll hafta agree with this. Pretty much every line in the movie was either cliche jokes or exposition or military jargon.

I felt the exact same way. :ilv:

Domestically I think it’s done. Probably won’t cross $100 million but luckily international is helping boost the box office. Will be interesting if it gets a sequel as it didn’t exactly light up the box office.

Rampage was slowed down by Infinity War.
We will just have to wait and see what happens.

It depends on how much it cost to make.

The reported prod. budget for Rampage is 120m.

How much do you think it needs to make for a sequel to be green lit?

The fact that it won’t pass 100M domestically probably kills chances of a sequel.

Rampage is likely making close to 95m at the end of it's domestic BO run. It'll miss 100m but the legs on the movie is actually pretty good for a monster/kaiju movie (almost same as Kong: Skull Island).

But the fact that Rampage is making nearly 160m in China solidifies the chances of a sequel. It had excellent rating and WoM in CBO. Which means the sequel if it ever comes to pass, is primed for a bigger final cume. Rampage is going to finish it's world-wide BO run with 420m+. Which makes the movie is a big success for WB. The movie will gross more than enough to warrant a sequel. But the prospects of the same depends entirely upon WB/Brad Peyton/The Rock. If they want to make a sequel, it'll happen. If they're not interested, it won't happen.

Great post, thanks for the insight.

Rented this finally and wasn't as bad as I was expecting but kind of boring. The creature designs were interesting but just like in Godzilla, it was hard for me to root for the main monster as a hero when it caused so much collateral damage and killed a lot of innocent people.

I see that it made about $425M worldwide against a production budget of $140M so I assume it made a decent profit that a sequel wouldn't be completely out of the picture.

The last film that got a sequel where it “disappointed” domestically but made lots overseas was Pacific Rim. And look how bad the sequel did.

I think the context with regards to domestic BO is vastly different for both. Pacific Rim as a concept is an easier sell in a post Transformers world and the 1st PR movie had a lot of hype and goodwill going for it before release. While this one didn't have that type of fanfare and there was still a lot of stigma attached to Rampage due to it being a video game adaptation.

PR opened with 37.3m and finished with 101.8m. While Rampage opened with 35.7m and will possibly end up with 100m (it's still running in 2nd run/drive-in theaters in NA). Their multipliers are close (Rampage 2.8 & PR 2.73) but PR opened in July which means it enjoyed the summer weekdays which means it had much higher potential for legs at the BO. Rampage didn't have the benefit of summer weekdays as it opened in April when the spring break was already over. Plus PR did have competition in 2013 but Rampage was fighting against an all timer behemoth in A:IW.

Also, Rampage didn't exactly 'disappoint' at the DBO like PR. PR barely made back 50% of it's production budget in DBO gross while Rampage recovered 83% of it's reported (120m from the trades) production budget. So Rampage is in a much better situation than PR in terms of commercial potential for a sequel.

But it did disappoint domestically when you think of what San Andreas did with the same star/director. I'm sure WB were hoping for numbers closer to that or Kong when they greenlit it. Why wouldn't they?
