Funcom tops Oslo stock exchange, invests heavily in The Secret World

Surprise! The Secret World launches Issue #15

May 11, 2016 13 Comments

Eureka, I’ve got it! That’s what The Secret World fans are saying about Issue #15 now that the servers are back up. If this comes as a surprise, it’s because it is! While we knew that The Sleuth’s Gallery, which combines all the previous Sidestories packs into a single issue, would be available soon, Funcom never gave an actual date.

Issue #15 is not just a compilation of previous content, however; it also includes a new investigation mission that starts in Kaidan but sends you all across the world in search of answers. Devs are calling this the most in-depth investigation mission yet.
All players who previously bought any of the Sidestories packs now have the entirety of Issue #15 for free; they can also get the collectors edition for the difference in price. What does this collectors edition offer? How about the chance to go all Sherlock Holmes-y with an account-wide Sleuth’s Deerstalker hat, Sleuth’s Inverness cape (neck item), and the Sleuth’s Pipe emote. Get a gander at the rewards below:

The Secret World is losing its lead writer

June 3, 2016 39 Comments

The Secret World is losing its lead writer, Funcom’s Romain Amiel has told players on the official forums.
“We are sad to announce that Joshua Doetsch, also known as Scrivnomancer, Lead Writer for The Secret World, will be leaving Funcom this coming Friday. Josh has received a great life opportunity that he couldn’t refuse, and we are really excited for him and this new challenge he accepted. After working on Age of Conan for 4 years, Josh officially joined the TSW team in 2013 where he started working on Issue 7: A Dream to Kill, following in the footsteps of the game’s stellar writing team including Ragnar, Joel, Dag, Ben, Kasper to name but a few. Josh has helped us weave the rich universes you’ve experienced through the years. He’s done us proud, and we’re confident he’ll continue to pen extraordinary tales in his future endeavours.”
Amiel says the studio is seeking a new writer and has vowed that the staffing “will not affect current and future development – including the upcoming Museum of the Occult.”

The Secret World preps fourth birthday festivities with double AP and Guardians of Gaia event

June 29, 2016 25 Comments

Four years ago this month, Funcom released The Secret World into the wild. That calls for celebration! Indeed, Funcom is kicking off the festivities in-game today. Here’s what’s in store for fans of the world’s only horror MMORPG:

  • The Guardians of Gaia: Guardians spawning in major adventure zones will provide three tiers of rewards for participants in this multiplayer event. (This runs until July 13th.)
  • Double AP: Funcom says this bonus won’t work with AP Injectors but does work with Timed AP Boosters.
  • Cash shop goodies: The Bohemian Grab Bag and Party Sack return along with the Mythos Machine motorcycle.
  • Cross-promo: Players who log into Age of Conan starting on Thursday will pick up a new pet, also in AoC. So not really TSW-themed there; more like your kid brother getting himself a gift for your birthday. But hey, minipets.
Happy birthday, TSW!

Chaos Theory: Loot bags and golems galore for The Secret World’s fourth birthday

July 7, 2016 Comments

There may have been moments over the past 12 months when fans feared this time would never come, but it has: Happy fourth birthday, The Secret World!
It’s been quite a roller coaster year; there have been ups (the 2015 Samhain mission was phenomenal) and there have been downs (financial woes are the worst).

Through it all our favorite conspiracy game not only persevered but continued making progress.

I am glad to have been on this wild ride — ups, downs, and all — and I am looking forward to what Funcom brings us for TSW’s fifth year. Especially with better funding, things only look to get better.

But there’s plenty of time to focus more on the future later. Right now, I just want to spend a moment on the memories of this past year. Oh, and get in all the AP and goodies I can during the anniversary celebration, of course!

Last year’s guide covers many aspects of the festivities really well (including where to find all of the various anniversary lore collections), so we won’t dwell on that too much here.

But there are some new things you won’t want to miss out on! So stroll with me down memory lane, then join in this year’s birthday party before it ends on Wednesday, July 13th.

The Secret World’s seasons two and three are ‘completely written’

September 22, 2016 34 Comments

In a new interview, Funcom Game Director Romain Amiel said that while the devs are in the middle of development for Season 2 for The Secret World, it’s going to take some time to do things right with a smaller team.

“We are evaluating which things need to be done so we can create Season 2 in the best way possible,” Amiel said. “Season 2 is already completely written. The next as well. There are a lot of projects for the future of TSW. But we have this unique chance to be in between two seasons and we want to use it at the maximum to give ourselves a chance to have a good future for the game and to make the next seasons as great as Season 1.”

Amiel spent a portion of the interview looking at how the team structured past releases and what it learned from the successes and mistakes of those.

He also reiterated his dream of player housing, which is only a design at this point: “I’d love to implement a real housing system where players could really have their own space to personalize by changing the color of the walls, placing furniture, an entrance to the sewer to a secret lair, etc.”

Funcom’s Q3 2016 financials hint at large Secret World update in early 2017

November 2, 2016 31 Comments

Fans of The Secret World should be excited today, as Funcom’s third quarter financial report to investors reveals that “The Secret World team is mainly focused on a large update to the game to be released during the first half of 2017.”

The update is expected to be a “major upgrade to both retention and acquisition mechanics and content of the game to counter the declining revenues” with more info coming in the first quarter of the new year.

The announcement was part of the investor package posted today; the company says it raised almost a million dollars through its share offering in August, improving its total equity since Q2. “Revenues in 3Q16 amount to USD 1,728 thousand compared to USD 2,195 thousand in 3Q15, following a gradual and expected decrease in the sales from the current Live Games. […] The cash position improved from USD 5,100 thousand at the end of 2Q16 to USD 5,208 thousand at the end of 3Q16, mainly due to the net proceeds received from the subsequent offering. The Live Games – The Secret World, Anarchy Online and Age of Conan – were the major contributors to the revenues.”

Leaderboard: Will The Secret World's relaunch entice you to play?

March 6, 2017 48 comments

Last week, the MMO world was startled to learn that instead of getting an expansion, The Secret World is getting a complete relaunch as part of a big Funcom push of the game.

At this point, there's been plenty of time to speculate (and not a lot of info from the studio forthcoming, and yes, we've asked!).

From the investor call, we know that the game is due for a newbie experience overhaul, a combat overhaul, daily login rewards, and a new business model that makes story content freely accessible, which suggests a lean away from buy-to-play.

So do you think we are looking at a game-crushing NGE -- or a Final Fantasy XIV-style GOTY-quality do-over? And more importantly, do these sound like the kinds of adjustments that might entice you to return to The Secret World or play for the first time? Let's find out in this week's Leaderboard.

Don't miss this morning's explainer piece on The Secret World's reboot as Secret World Legends, now a "shared world action RPG."

You wanted answers, we've got answers! As soon as Funcom sent us the press release and the FAQ about the launch of Secret World Legends and its effect on The Secret World, we fired off some questions to get more details and some clarification.

Game Director Romain Amiel has now expounded on different aspects of both games for us, including the use of the Ability Wheel, changes to progression, Grandmaster status in both games, future development, and more. Here's what he had to say. (Bad news spoiler: Your hopes of having continued content in The Secret World or a new graphics engine have the same lifespan as an Orochi agent.)

The Secret World with MJ: Discussing the future

Well then. That answers that. If you haven't heard today's The Secret World news, you'll get an earful tonight. Massively OP's MJ is still reeling from the Secret World Legends announcement and all it means for her favorite game. No matter what, she'll always carry the torch for TSW! Thankfully, MJ still gets to log in and play, and that's exactly what she's going to do. What she'll do, however, is anyone's guess; she might take her frustrations out on every mob in sight and litter the ground with corpses, or she may just wander the world as dazed as a zombie. Tune in live at 8:00 p.m. to join the discussion in a rant-filled edition of OPTV in...

Secret World Legends dev stream showcases tutorial, character creation changes, and combat

April 7, 2017 25 comments

With Secret World Legends in closed beta, many fans are unable to get in and see what is going on with the changes. For those without access, devs hosted a livestream today to show off a few features, such as a revamped character customization, a peek at the new tutorial, and some combat. There was also mention of the possibility of cross-faction cabals, but it isn’tt for sure.

Character customization has added new faces, new hairstyles, and even added facial tattoos as well as beefing up the starter clothing selection. The tutorial, which is actually interwoven with the beginning cutscenes that veteran players will be familiar with, puts players in a graveyard and tosses them into combat and option much sooner than The Secret World did.

Devs then demonstrated combat, showing some leeway in where they target reticle is as well as the overheating feature of elementalism. Game Director Romain Amiel emphasized that weapons have different levels of difficulty now (for example, the shotgun is more complicated than elementalism). See the combat for yourself and listen for other tidbits in the full video below.

Secret World Legends launches June 26; check out the new trailer

May 9, 2017 85 comments

When Funcom told everyone a few weeks ago that Secret World Legends was still on track for spring, MMO gamers were skeptical.

Technically, they were right to be: Funcom has this morning announced that the game will launch on June 26th, a few days after the summer solstice.

As we’ve previously reported, the game is a “shared-world role-playing game” reboot-like “reimagination” of MMORPG The Secret World, which will be maintenance moded in its wake. The new game, which has been in beta this spring, is still under NDA.
“Secret World Legends features a revamped combat system, newly designed progression system, updated visuals, and more. You can choose to explore and uncover the story by yourself, or you can team up with other players. In the game’s central hub, Agartha, you can meet and socialize with hundreds of other players, while player population in the adventure areas beyond will be tightly controlled to make sure that the experience is as immersive as possible and that the focus remains on you and your journey.”
Stay tuned for more, as we’ll be chatting with the studio this afternoon, and check out the new trailer and images down below.

Secret World Legends AMA says NDA drop, game owner bonuses, and roadmap coming soon

June 6, 2017 39 comments

Have some questions about Funcom’s Secret Worlds Legends reboot? You and a million other players, so stand in line, pal. Actually, the studio did field an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit today to deliver some answers to pressing queries.

Topics discussed included transferring cosmetics, changes to the AEGIS system, tweaks to the story, inventory changes, combat animations, the removal of crafting, gear progression, cross-faction cabals, gold spammers, and upcoming events, such as a 2017 edition of the Whispering Tide.

The NDA for the beta should be dropping soon, and Funcom specified that while mission maps will hold no more than 10 players at a time, the social hubs are being tuned to handle up to 500 at a go.

August 14, 2017 118 comments

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you, though I did a double-take too: Deadline is reporting that The Secret World aka Secret World Legends is getting a TV adaptation produced by Johnny Depp and his company Infinitum Nihil.
“It will center on a team of undercover agents and the shadowy war between secret societies: the Illuminati, Dragon and the Templar. Central to the plot is their battle against the supernatural in an adventure that spans across our world, and incorporates the realms of ancient myths and legends, as well as today’s conspiracy theories and headline news.”

Tokyo is now open in Secret World Legends

August 16, 201742 comments

Secret World Legends continues to refill the content pool to bring it back up to the level of its predecessor. Today, the conspiracy reboot opened back up the doors to Kaidan, a section of Tokyo that was ground zero to a black Filth bomb that began the main storyline of the game.

Not all of Kaidan is ready to experience, it should be noted. While there are plenty of reworked missions available to players who have been chafing at the end of Transylvania since launch, the team still has two more batches of Tokyo content to add before bringing the game back up to The Secret World’s levels.
Update 2.1 also added weapon skins for the cosmetic dressing room, elite difficulty levels for scenarios, adjusted XP rewards in dungeons, and reworked spirit blade mechanics.Read more

Secret World Legends adjusts controversial raid reward lockout

september 8,2017 7 comments

While new — or at least, warmed up and re-served — content is all well and good for Secret World Legends, the player community took particular umbrage with Funcom’s handling of the NYC raid in this week’s patch.

The controversy revolved around a new week-long lockout timer on rewards, which many felt was unnecessary and counter-productive. “The players’ concerns are that this makes it difficult to play together with friends, their cabal members, or even just to help out random strangers who are asking to form groups in general chat,” blog Self-Distract Sequence noted.Read more
