The Secret World : Issue 10 Nightmare in the Dream Palace Preview

Posted Dec 05, 2014

The Secret World issue 10: Nightmare in the Dream Palace is live, and we recently had the chance to run around the other side of Tokyo in a look at the brand new content. When we last left issue 9, there had been a huge explosion that conveniently reduced the quarantine wall that had been blocking off one side of Tokyo from the other, to more of an inconvenience than an obstacle. Issue 9 worked to lay down the foundations of new systems and new strategies, specifically having to do with Aegis.
Read more of Christina Gonzalez's The Secret World: Issue 10 Nightmare in the Dream Palace Preview.
Issue 10 does also add in a few new cool systems and options--Aegis expands in a couple of new ways, for example-- but the main focus is on story.

Players will start to get some answers to what has been happening in the isolated city, new areas open up as The Secret World presents the colorful and varied characters it specializes in. Along the way, players will find new monsters, including some more derived from the local mythology, and new Filth types. Also on the table for the first time is a customizable UI, which should make many players happy.
TSW1.jpg

Funcom is looking to add depth in story content in this particular issue. If you followed issue 9 to completion, you’ll recognize several threads to follow here. Aside from the aforementioned bomb, there’s a strange killer wandering about town murdering people while wearing a rabbit mask. All while the Orochi tower stands bright in the distance. We won’t be heading there until issue 11, but the influence of Orochi has been obvious since the previous release and continues in issue 10 as well.
Aegis launched with issue 9 as a brand new layer to combat. It created a host of new strategies, since the type of Aegis each creature featured was linked with the best way to kill it. Monsters have a purple glow? Use psychic Aegis. Fighting droids? Switch over to cybernetic Aegis weapon controllers. Some creatures will switch types over the course of a battle, making active perception matter. All of this brought an injection of life into the game’s combat system. Players can complete a mission to go obtain their own Aegis Shield at the beginning of the new content. An Aegis shield wraps around your health bar in the color representing the type you’re using. In battle, it will block some of the damage of the same type (you can switch the type and color with ease as what you’re fighting. It also works in conjunction with other people, with some strategic coordination of Aegis weapons and creatures you’re fighting, other players can heal your shield. If you’re a support or tank-oriented player, this is especially relevant to you.
TSW2.jpg

In addition to the shield, the game adds drops like new gadgets that can affect Aegis as well as items to fill the new Aegis headgear slot in the character sheet. This beefing up of your characters is not a coincidence. Some of the battles awaiting you in Tokyo are quite tough, and those include the creatures in the new nightmare zone. Some of the more intriguing of the new enemies are located here. Pay close attention to the setting, especially the derelict cargo ship docked nearby and spilling out more of this infestation. Several new enemies and Filth are to be found here, and in a variety of color that’s unusual may bring more questions as well as point to a future path for the game. Seeing corrupted large versions of what were apes is but one part of the dread. And they hit really hard too (ouch). Other areas include the docks, an Orochi employee village, a school ground (where you may run into some Japanese mythology-inspired enemies in your search), and a mysterious clubhouse. A large temple on an impressive scale would be a pretty incredibly set piece in any MMO, but here is used to its maximum.
TSw3.jpg

Puzzle and mystery fans should be pleased at the clue and lore hunt for the masked assassin, which will take you through town and further lead to traces of the Fear Nothing Foundation. There are not only new areas to discover and play through, but some previously inaccessible places will let you enter now. The love hotel, The Dream Palace, will be the site of a final mission that promises to cap off the issue with nightmarish, illusory imagery and a distorted sense of place that takes you to the other side of the Tokyo journey so far, digging into just what the motives for setting the bomb that tore through much including the quarantine wall were. I got a brief look at the beginning of this mission, and it will definitely be a trippy one. It promises to give the flip side of events so far, all of it leading to the future in issue 11. This update should definitely pack on at least several solid hours of content for players to explore through.

The Secret World nerfs Tokyo mobs and buffs rewards

Players struggling to progress through The Secret World's Tokyo zone will now find it a more pleasurable experience, thanks to today's hotfix that makes mobs easier to kill while increasing rewards across the board.

Mobs in Kaidan will now have reduced damage and health, making them easier to kill. Better yet, TSW is increasing AEGIS XP from containers, lowering the cost for memory expansion modules, and giving AEGIS peripherals as part of the Issue 9 and 10 story missions (and will retroactively award these to players who have completed them).

[Thanks to Tyler for the tip!]

The Secret World's Bylos on 2015, Tokyo, and more

The Secret World game director Joel Bylos has penned an end-of-the-year/beginning-of-the-year producer's letter. The first half of his post serves as a tidy summary of TSW's content releases in 2014, while the second half focuses on how Funcom will complete the Tokyo storyline, improve the new player experience, and release new multiplayer content over the course of 2015.

"There is a significant backlog of planned Tokyo content that we need to evaluate," Bylos explains. "We have material for a few more side stories as well as a new scenario map, auxiliary weapon, and lair content."

The Secret World : Upcoming Content & Bylos Moving to "New Initiative"

Posted Mar 09, 2015

Funcom's Joel Bylos has penned what may be one of his last Game Director's Letters for The Secret World. In it, he mentions that he will be moving on to a "new initiative" within Funcom. Bylos does not offer any further details but does mention that it will require his full focus and, as a result, he will be (and has been) handing off many of his TSW duties to others on the team.
Prior to that, Bylos lets players in on what the TSW group has been working on and what can be expected to work its way into game in the near future.
First off, the Enhanced Player Experience is working its way on to the Testlive server so players can check out the changes made to Elite Abilities. According to Bylos, those changes include more effects and a sincere effort to make them more powerful. In addition, Elite Abilities that have seemingly been underused, will be given a new location on the player hotbar in an effort to bring them into wider usage.
Lastly, Bylos writes about Issue 11, the Orochi Tower and how this content will bring the Tokyo storyline to its conclusion. Players will learn much more about the Orochi Corporation and will run into some old friends as well as meet up with faction contacts.
As of this writing, the Enhanced Player Experience will be released to live servers first with Issue 11 to follow.

The Secret World : Enhanced Player Experience Goes Live

Posted Mar 11, 2015

Funcom has announced that The Secret World has been updated to bring the Enhanced Player Experience online. Players can expect faster monster kill times, two starter weapons to allow more flexibility on starting a new character, improved rewards, over five hundred abilities overhauled and more.
Additionally, the update opens Tokyo for free to those players completing the Transylvania storyline via a new subway before entering Venice. Training has also been reduced to one session. Players will still need to own Issue 9 to progress the Tokyo story.
Lastly, Funcom has address quality of life:

  • Anima Leap allows fast travel between anima wells
  • maps now feature new markers for Missions, Vendors, Dungeon Entrances, NPCs, Anima Wells and Transition Points
  • monster power ranks are now displayed over its health bar
  • an "effusion score" to assess overall gear strength has been added

The Secret World : Monthly Newsletter Reviews March, Touts Issue 11

Posted Apr 15, 2015

The latest monthly newsletter has been published on The Secret World site.
Letter writing duties have fallen to Senior Community Manager Laurie “sezmra” Payne since Joel Bylos has moved on to some other unnamed project within Funcom. This month, Payne reviews March including Golden Week, the #IAMTSW contest and the newly implemented Enhanced Player Experience.

Wrapping up the letter, Payne talks a bit about the forthcoming Issue 11. The Orochi Towers will be the centerpiece of Issue 11, along with some new randomized encounters to "keep things fresh" for players. Missions will feature only a single day's cooldown and players will work their way through the towers while simultaneously discovering more about the Orochi Group.

The Secret World : What is #IAMTSW?

Posted Apr 24, 2015

The Secret World Community Team recently started a new initiative called "#IAMTSW" that gives players a chance to participate in any one of several week's competitions. We had the opportunity to chat with Senior Community Manager Laurie Payne about #IAMTSW. See what she had to say and check out some of the amazing creations by the TSW community.
Read more of Bill Murphy's The Secret World: What is #IAMTSW?
MMORPG: What prompted the IAMTSW contest?
Laurie Payne: As a community management team, we're always brainstorming up new ideas for events and contests. It's part of the magnificent challenge of working with communities. Keeping your community engaged with new things and new ideas is super important - it is great to have a really active community.

My colleague, Gray "Tomium" Hogan drafted up this intense outline for a contest; we wanted to captivate both our current community and those that might not be too familiar with The Secret World. We went back and forth on the idea honing it into something that was modern and took advantage of the way players communicate with each other, such as social media channels. It grew into what is now known as the #IAMTSW Competition.
iamtsw_edelweiss_t.jpg

Each week, we have a new contest category that players can enter. They simply need to submit their entries into each category’s forum to participate! For example, the most recent category that is live is the Hand-Crafted Round. Here, players can submit entries ranging from fan paintings to miniatures of their characters! Any TSW player can enter by visiting our #IAMTSW forum to read up on the rules and how to get started here.
MMORPG: How has the response been so far?
Laurie Payne: The response has been just amazing. Within the first day of launching the competition, our players helped jumpstart #IAMTSW with their own excitement. We saw the #IAMTSW hashtag starting to trend as more and more of our players jumped on board supporting us. We saw fan art pop up with drawings of beloved characters showing off the #IAMTSW tag. I feel that our players truly appreciate Funcom acknowledging their creativity and their importance as players, as our community.
The entries we've had so far have been stellar. It always floors me when our players show off their passion for the game, whether it be taking a cool screenshot or writing a fun story about their character.
3p3ZcVY_t.jpg

Check out our first two winners here:
Audio Round
Screenshot Round
Our cosplay round is currently closed and we're in the process of picking a winner this week. You can find the entries for that round here. It's so exciting!!
MMORPG: TSW has always been seen by the MMO community as "one of those games that's great, but not many play". Do you think this community contest might convince some folks to give TSW another shot?
Laurie Payne: Certainly! TSW has a very dedicated and tight knit community, so giving them an opportunity to express their dedication is very important to us. Getting The Secret World more exposure is also part of our jobs in the community team, and if the #IAMTSW convinces just one more person out there to try TSW, to experience the improvements we're always making to the game, that's a win. We love our game, we know others will too.
DSCN5579_t.jpg

MMORPG: What sorts of prizes can players earn by partaking in the contest?
Laurie Payne: So, a contest wouldn't be complete without some swag, right? The #IAMTSW competition is all about creativity and we've gotten creative with how we're awarding prizes. For each round, Funcom will pick one winner for the official prize pack:

  • a modern drinking glass emblazoned with The Secret World logo
  • a set of faction dog-tag necklaces
  • 1200 Bonus Points for use in the in-game store
  • a Deep Mystery box game item which contains random goodies for your character
  • a custom forum title in our official forums
  • a in-game t-shirt emblazoned with the winner's character name and the round that they've won
Additionally, everyone that participates will receive a unique in-game t-shirt to add to their collection!
That's not all though! While Funcom will only pick one winner for each round, we have some awesome groups and cabals (guilds) that will be picking winners for each round to receive their own prize packs. Allowing groups/cabals the ability to pick their own winners spreads prizes out even further, and gives players more chances at winning cool stuff.
GeqLPTf_t.jpg

These prize packs could include in-game items, help with raids, real-world hand-crafted art, and other great prizes. This is just another example of how kickass our community is -- they are supporting the #IAMTSW with their own time and effort. That is not lost on us here at Funcom.
MMORPG: What's the overall goal for this contest? IF there had to be one?
Laurie Payne: I wouldn't say that the #IAMTSW competition has only one goal. We went into this with several goals in mind. #IAMTSW is made up of layers. We're showcasing our community as they showcase their creativity and skill. This shows off to the rest of the MMO world more about The Secret World, the intriguing bits of the game that have captured so many already. #IAMTSW also does a great job of giving back to the community not just with prizes, but admiration. I also like to personally think that it's given another chance for our players get to know each other better, too.
tsw_c1s_t.jpg

In the end, we wanted to do something that we'd not done before: something big, something brilliant. I think we really have accomplished what we desired; give our players every opportunity to show us why they can say "I am TSW". After all, they -are- The Secret World.

The Secret World vows to put more mobility in combat

January 15, 2016 18 Comments

An unpopular change to one of The Secret World’s ranged abilities in the last patch might end up benefiting the game’s population as a whole.
Lead Designer Romain Amiel wrote a post yesterday acknowledging that the new required cast time (or “snare”) for anima shot and other builders hasn’t gone over so well, despite it being a move to give ranged attacks a small drawback in comparison to melee. Ultimately, he said that the discussion got the team to meet together and agree that movement should be freed up as much as possible instead of hindered.
“In the very near future, we will be removing the casting snare effect from every builder!” Amiel announced. “Additionally, all melee dashes and charges will have their cooldown reduced, to allow melee characters to get in the action faster, both in PvE and PvP.”Read More

Tomorrow’s The Secret World patch adds new PvP scenario, new group finder

January 27, 2016 23 Comments

Ready to quite literally fight to be king of the mountain? The Secret World‘s Shambala scenario tasks players with doing precisely that with a new style of PvP match. After extensive testing, said scenario is ready for prime time and will be deployed with a patch tomorrow. It’s important to note that this is completely free, so as long as you own the game, you can jump right in and start enjoying what the new PvP style has to offer.

Do you prefer to work with your fellow players rather than against them? That’s fine too because this patch is also adding in the group finder functionality. Now you can just queue and go into one of the game’s dungeons without so much as a by-your-leave. Any way you slice it, it’ll be easier tomorrow to sit down and get in some play time with your fellow players.

The Secret World’s new membership rewards launch tomorrow

February 8, 2016 47 Comments

Game Director Romain “Tilty” Amiel has just informed MassivelyOP that The Secret World’s new membership reward system will be launching tomorrow, February 9th. That means that subscribed players will receive their reward goodies depending on which tier of membership they’ve paid for, from 30 days all the way to Grand Master. Those who are still debating on whether or not they want to purchase the GM pack (and get all the goodies up to the one year tier delivered immediately) have only until tomorrow to decide before the pack disappears forever.

Amiel also announced that the Valentine’s Day item store update will also launch at the same time, so if you are in the mood for love — or you just want that dance that you missed last year — you’ll have that chance.

Chaos Theory: In The Secret World, membership has its benefits

February 12, 2016 33 Comments

By now, you’ve probably heard me mention a time or three that The Secret World overhauled its membership benefits and loyalty rewards. As a TSW fan, I was very excited to see these changes heading our way; I am totally in favor of getting more bang for your buck, and the new system is meant to deliver just that.

As a Grandmaster myself, I couldn’t wait to log in and get my hands on all my cool new goodies. Bring on the bling! It all sounded pretty dang cool on paper, and anything that brings in more players and makes current ones happier is a total win/win. But we all know things don’t always go as planned. Now that the new system has launched, how did it play out in practice? Here’s a look at the good, the bad, and the golden.

The Secret World : Well Known NPCs To Get Storylines In Issue 14

Posted Mar 12, 2016

During a recent Funcom livestream game director Romain "Tilty" Amiel revealed that The Secret World Issue #14 will take place in Egypt and that well known characters in the game will receive some expanded storylines.
Players will learn more of their past rather than move along the main story arc.
Several other features will be added to the game alongside the new storylines. You can check out the Twitch stream video here to learn more.

Chaos Theory: Tomb-raiding The Secret World’s Issue #14 with Funcom

March 31, 2016 39 Comments

Remember that Indiana Jones-inspired outfit from The Secret World’s Issue #6? Today is a great day to dust it off and slip it on because Issue #14’s release returns us to the tomb-raiding life, complete with temples and doom!

Called Call of the Nameless, this newest adventure not only returns to Egypt but returns to the epic self-contained story line style found in Issues #5 through 7. There is little argument that those issues are some of the best storytelling in TSW and encapsulate the heart of the game, and it is precisely this that Game Director Romain Amiel wanted to return to.

So how does Call of the Nameless measure up to to the likes of The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn? Is it dark? Oh, yes — it is quite literally dark. Does it have story? Yes — it even has a literal story. Although I haven’t experienced the full thing (that’s saved for my OPTV stream series starting tonight at 9:00 p.m. EDT!), I did get a decent taste of the story, the atmosphere, and the mechanics during yesterday’s tour with Amiel and Community Manager Andy Benditt. And yes, I am hungry for more. Read on for my impressions of Issue #14 before it launches today, sans significant spoilers.

The Stream Team: Following the Issue #14 trail in The Secret World

April 14, 2016 1 Comment

Last time in The Secret World, MassivelyOP’s MJ investigated the Aten cultists and their drilling to try to discover the cause of the earthquakes in Agartha.

However, the cultists weren’t the culprits, so now the wizened statues are sending her to talk to the human-hating Jinn. Yah – that’s going to go over well. Join us live at 9:00 p.m. as MJ continues the Issue #14 adventures by appealing to the elementals. Warning: Total and complete spoilers ahead!
