As of late, I’ve been intrigued by the Pre Crisis Justice Society of America, and have been enjoying reading some classic JSA appearances. I don’t think this team is discussed nearly as much as it should be. The Golden Age Justice Society featured Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Jay), Green Lantern (Alan), Black Canary and Hawkman on the team (among others), and this was long before the Justice League. This was the first superhero team that the Trinity was part of, but this team has been bogged down by messy continuity issues and retcons. But just look at how aesthetic these OGs look together:
I’ve been reading some Golden Age stories featuring The Flash and Green Lantern and am surprised by how grounded their powers and enemies are. These are almost pulpy stories where the most fantastical element is the hero’s powers and how they would utilize them in real world situations. Compared to their later iterations, Golden Age Jay and Alan have very grounded abilities.
I understand that The Batman is intended to remain in its own pocket, but the Golden Age/Earth 2 Justice Society could possibly be modernized to fit in with the tone established in The Batman. These initial JSA stories are fairly grounded (there are exceptions) and typically deal with human enemies and abilities.
I don’t think this would ever happen but I would absolutely love to see The Batman as the beginning of an Earth Two universe made up of entirely new versions of Superman and Wonder Woman, along with grounded takes on Alan Scott and Jay Garrick. I’m probably alone on this, but down the line in this Reeves Gotham universe, I’d love to see a super grounded take on Green Lantern with Alan Scott.
Just as a side note, Earth Two Dick Grayson is one of the most underrated DC characters. I loved the Earth Two influence on Robin in Batman: The Brave and The Bold.
I fully realize this is an unlikely pipe dream for it to be associated with The Batman, but I’d love to at least see a version of this team featured more prominently on film or animation. Post Crisis JSA just isn’t as cool to me without those heavy hitters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Robin.
