MARVEL WHAT-IF: REIMAGINING SEQUELS & FILMS THAT NEVER WERE

Pitt as Cap falls into the boring, leading men roles he always struggled with. I'd much rather have him as Thor, where he looks the part and can be funny.
Does he really? I think he was really good in Allied. Just that kind of roles would have made him a contender for Captain America.
If he plays Thor instead, it would work well too. It could be a lighter version of his Akilles, also a godly warrior. How about that?

Going back to BobJM's version, it would mean a switch of actors and Brendan Fraser becomes Cap instead.
I could imagine it working out fine.

Dolph Lundgren would be my 90s Thor if it was based on looks.

True, Pitt has traditionally been much better at playing more colourful characters rather than everyman types or straight-laced heroes. I'll admit he has gotten better at those in recent years. Perhaps because his acting has improved when it comes to more understated characters or perhaps simply because getting older has given him more gravitas. But I can see how young Pitt as Cap could be a something that sounds good on paper but might have been slightly disappointing.

I’m struggling with who would have been a good Cap in the 90s. Damon would have been too young, he’s more a 2002 Cap. Viggo maybe, but he’s better with characters with a dark streak.

Controversial choice: Denzel Washington.

Denzel doesn't really work as a flag wearing poster boy for the US Army of the 40's. That would ignore some pretty significant realities of that time period. Possibly offensively so. Cap is one of those characters whose ethnicity is clearly tied to their backstory. I have a hard time thinking of a good 90's pick for the part.

A black Captain America in the late 90s would be Will Smith, I’d think.

Maybe everyone’s having a tough time casting Cap because I already nailed it with Brad Pitt :argh:

Maybe it’s Ed Burns though

That’s why I said controversial!

He’s the only 90s star I can think of with the right mix of charisma and physicality, along with being able to play the straight man.

Not really a fan. Although I'd actually like to see him briefly show up in a flashback as the MCU Uncle Ben. He's from Queens, kind of looks like he could be related to Tom Holland and it would be a fun cameo for those of us who remember him from when he was rather famous.

Fair enough. It's just that changing a character's race seems to be viewed as controversial even when it doesn't make any real difference so I wasn't sure if that's what you meant.

He could be MCU Uncle Ben. I usually fan cast that with Greg Kinnear, but Burns works

:argh:
You did :)

But we must have his skills for playing a straight man, in Allied, and go back in time with that skill.

Eddie Dean wanted to have Pitt as Thor instead.
Would you be willing to swap two actors in your vision, and have Fraser as Cap?

Oh... I like it. Sorvino as Kingpin would be so great. Trying to think of a good Foggy. Kevin Pollack maybe.

Yeah, I was having trouble with picking a Foggy Nelson.

The names that came across my mind were Michael Chikilis , or even Jim Belushi if we're talking the early 90s.

I went with Pollack because of Casino. I’d say John C. Reilly but he was still doing really small supporting roles then.
