Star Trek Sequel on the Fast Track

Source: Variety
March 31, 2009

As Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to its May 8 release, Star Trek, and has hired Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to write the screenplay.

Variety says J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the new film, is on board to produce the follow-up alongside his Bad Robot partner Bryan Burk. No decision has been made yet on whether Abrams will direct the sequel.

Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof also are receiving producing credit on the sequel.

The story is still in the embryonic stage, but the trio are aiming to deliver their script to the Melrose studio by Christmas for what would likely be a summer 2011 release.

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month," Kurtzman said. "With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

Though Orci and Kurtzman have worked together as a writing team for more than 12 years, the duo has worked with Lindelof on only one screenplay - DreamWorks' Cowboys & Aliens, which they are currently writing together.

If ST is as good as it looks, I'm all for a sequel.

My question is just what the Hell do you call the sequel?

Star Trek 2.2
? Star Trek: To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before? Star Trek: The Sequel?

Given the history of these boards, I'd say it might be a little early for this thread. Then again, it's only six weeks o the release of the movie, and we DO have some official news.

I'm excited for the upcoming film. I'll see that, then decide to get excited about the sequel.

Damn it, Sam Fisher got dibs on making the sequel thread. :csad:

Star Trekkin' Across the Universe

The Dark Fleet

See Spock Run

ST2: Judgment Space

Star Trek: The Search for Bailout Money

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kong (come on, you know you'd pay to see that!)

You forgot Star Trek 2: Electric Boogaloo

I think Wilhelm should have come back just to start this thread.

Damon Lindelof is writing too?:up:

I'm not all that jazzed for this new thing, much less a sequel.

We all know it's bound to happen. Whether JJ re-invents a character from Trek lore or he imagines someone new, the success of his Star Trek re-boot will spawn a sequel.

Would you like Abrams to re-boot a villain from TOS (there are many to choose from)?

Should the Star Trek Abramsverse have only villains that we have never seen before?

What about incorporating villains from other Trek shows?

Lets talk about it here!!

Haha. I just wonder if when Pine and Quinto and the rest of the crew are ready to move on if they'll try to re imagine Picard and his crew.

Interesting thought. I guess I could see that happening 10 - 15 years down the line.

If JJ Abrams were to go the route of re-booting a villain from TOS, I'm fine with Khan in the sequel (if done as brilliantly as the first movie was done).

"Khan and Kirk exist, and while their history may not be exactly as people are familiar with, I would argue that a person's character is what it is," states Abrams, explaining that new-Khan could hate Kirk as much as old-Khan despite dissimilar back stories. "Certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there ... even if he doesn't have the same issues."

The way I see it, Abrams won't be re-booting 'Wrath of Khan' but rather 'Space Speed'...and that would be one hell of a sequel!! Granted, Space Speed lacked action, but it doesn't have to be that way in the Abramsverse. Although its a very character driven story, there is definitely room for interpretation. The SS Botony Bay can be more than just a sleeper ship.

Like the rest of the cast, it will be a fresh new take on Khan and the Eugenics Wars. My picks (based on looks and acting chops) so far are:

Khan Noonien Singh

Marla McGivers (the future Mrs. Khan)

This cast would also include Yeoman Rand, Nurse Chapel and several of Khan's henchmen/women but I haven't cast them yet.

I'm really in favor of Star Trek 2 doing something original instead of remaking things that already worked. Do something with the Gorns, for instance. No need to rehash things.

That said, if you were to reintroduce Khan, I'd definitely not do a remake of Space Seed or Wrath of Khan. Simple basic concept, the Botany Bay is discovered by the USS Reliant which fails to stop his takeover of the ship. At that point Khan has his own starship and no revenge baggage so he's a free operator to do what he wants.

I'd quite like the second film to take it's own route, with an original story, with maybe a cliffhanger leading into the third film involving Khan, or just a cameo at the very end setting up the third. I'm interested in seeing what Abrams can dream up for the Star Trek universe in his new-ish time-line that's original.

Though, Nestor Carbonell is Khan  Nice choice.

The Gorn would be very interesting to explore. Unlike Khan, the Gorn character never left the small screen. They are mentioned in the other series, seen in 'Enterprise', and Picard even talks about them briefly in 'Insurrection', but a feature film that would have them as the main villains would be really cool.

Here is the Gorn in 2267...

The Abramsverse can re-imagine a Gorn WAY better than this!!!

Characthers I would like to see in a sequel:

Things I would like to see in a Trek sequel:

*Gorns: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Gorn
*Harry Mudd: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Harry_Mudd
*Andorians: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Andorian
*Tholians: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Tholian
*Section 31: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Section_31
*Garth of Izar ("Whom Gods Destroy"): http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Garth_of_Izar

Eps or storylines from The Original Series I would like to see revisited/redo or reworked for a sequel:

*Charlie X: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Charlie_X
*Where No Man Has Gone Before: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Where_No_Man_Has_Gone_Before_(episode)
*The Squire of Gothos: ("Trelane" the bad guy in the ep always reminded me of Q): http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Squire_of_Gothos
*The Changeling (but might be too much like "The Motion Picture): http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Changeling
*The Doomsday Machine: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Doomsday_Machine

As much as I love Khan ("Space Speed" and "Wrath of Khan") I don't see any real reason to redo it for a sequel. Give some other concepts from the series, or maybe some new ideas to be in the sequel :)

I loooooooove the Gorn!! be good to see a Gorn, even if it's a cameo in the next flick I'll be happy :)

I was gonna say Klingons but the Gorn were in what, 2 episodes? It might be more exciting to see J.J. deal with them. I know for the third I want Khan AND the Klingons though. Also, I'm not sure I want anymore than 3 films. Let's not beat these characters into the ground like before.

Good resemblance for Rand. Da Bruce would be great as Koloth, Kang, or Kodos, or as a Q ;-> John Goodman would be fine as a dopey Mudd; if you want one with more of an edge, Bruce Willis or a made-up Tom Cruise (who did a great skank cameo recently).

Jude Law and Jim Carrey as Andor(r?)ians.

Ralph Fiennes as a Ferengi.

Ben Stiller as a weird, mutant giant Ferengi the other Ferengi make fun of for being so tall.

Mike Tyson as a Gorn.

I sincerely hope so - it can't be that hard to come up with a Gorn design that looks bad@$$ and yet still clearly evokes the original - kind of the way the new "Land Of The Lost" reworked the Sleestaks:
OLD
sleestaks.jpg

NEW
LandOfLost-Sleestak.jpg

Of course, the old Gorn look would give the new Trek designers something better to work with; nicer as the new Sleestaks look, they still don't appear as formidable as even the OLD Gorn does, IMO.

^^^ Wow lol
yea if JJ is directing, ill be watching

The Gorns could be re-imagined in a similar fashion to how Lizardman looks from the Soul Calibur video game series...
