They should use the flashy costumes during missions, like when they are really going against the government like face to face. The costumes of Blink, Sage and Polaris in the comics look really good.

An important thing though is that they should be protective and functional otherwise there is no point in them wearing them in-universe.

Most if not all of them have made the suits they wear more protective than regular clothing by varying degrees. The optimal combat suit would be personalized, while still matching the rest of the team, as well as enhancing their combat potential wherever it can. For example Polaris's optimal combat suit should have metal gauntlets, boots, and upper chest armor to optimize her flight capabilities; as well as extra metal plates on it to be used as detachable projectiles, shields and transportation (useful for moving herself and others around).

They already have her throwing around knives with her powers and flying, I don't see how making a "Kevlar" weave suit with throwing knives all over it, and (fixed and detachable) "metal" plates on it to optimize her combat abilities that she would use on occasion would push them over budget.
