Derrickson to step down; who should direct?

I honestly don’t expect them to go after another horror director after this.

Aster and Garland will never direct for the DC/Marvel/Star Wars universes.

They both have too strong of a voice and their own way of production. Not trying to say they're too talented, even though both have made one or two of my favorite movies of the past decade... Ari is too in his own space to forfeit to a higher production company and Alex wouldn't let them take Annihilation from him to **** with the ending, therefor succumbing to the terrible early year film release (he knew his film will grow at home/streaming).

Flanagan could maybe do something someday, but not now. He's happy with his King adaptions, (planing to do a couple more) as well as stick to more honest-true horror and not horror construed through a "Marvel character" and such.

Eggars and Aster would make great films...but I don't see them doing the Marvel thing.

Mike Flanagan is a much more likely option...if they want to go safe but have a good Horror director.

I think Andy Muschietti is a possibility...it's not like him doing Flash disqualifies him from doing a Disney film.

But...I'm still going with Panos Cosmatos. The MCU likes to find indie talent who made a few bold films that the public never saw...and his aesthetic would fit a Dr Strange film. Again...that is IF Marvel is serious about making a dark fantasy/horror film...which...I have my doubts.

OR...what would be a BRILLIANT move...Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as co-directors. Those guys are INCREDIBLE and that would send my interest in this film skyrocketing. Ah, crap...now whoever they get will disappoint me if it isn't them.

A few more names that could work: Gareth Edwards, J.A. Bayona, Bong Joon-ho (though probably too busy at the moment), Jordan Peele.

Bayona might still be busy with Lord Of The Rings by the time they have to start filming.

Doctor Strange was just a middle of the road MCU film so Derrickson leaving isn't the worst thing. It's not like losing Waititi, Gunn, the Russo's, Coogler, or Whedon . It's more like losing John Watts....It's like whatever.

My thing is, what is the tone of this supposed to be? It's probably gonna be very trippy so it needs that vibe.

The thing that bugs me is that ...WHY NOW? why not months ago?

If that's the case why wait til you're a few months out to find a new director? Something fell apart recently. Maybe they should delay the movie

They really can't because supposedly it ties together a lot of **** for phase 4 and explains some stuff.

They've probably been talking to directors for awhile.

Either that or Feige has suddenly lost his mind. They seem to have known the plot of this movie for some time...what with WandaVision connecting to it etc.

Sigh why did this one have to be the one to get behind the scenes issues this was my most anticipated phase 4 film.

Kinda disappointed that they're replacing the director so far into pre-production. That means much of the script is set and most of the sets and pre-viz are likely done, which probably won't leave much room for whoever takes over to put too much of their spin on the film. Just hope they get someone serviceable at this point who understands the source material and knows how to evolve the characters from their last film outings.

I'm legit worried we are getting another thor the dark world and it really hurts that it's the one movie I was most excited for.

Really need a solid director choice to feel better about this.

They‘d rather try to get an experienced director to land it somehow safe (and formulated like a guy said in another thread) than take a risk with an director with arty ambitions.
I‘m afraid they will make the Ron-Howard-approach - not that Ron Howard will direct it, but an experienced non-horror director like Ron Howard will take over like they did with Solo (which I liked, but could‘ve been much better, if they kept the original director)

If Jon Favreau wouldn‘t be so busy with the 2nd season of the Mandalorian, he would be my first guess (not saying that he‘s the right choice)

Strange being generic was not Derrickson's fault. Marvel Studios brought in comedy writers to lighten up his script and make it more mainstream and less weird

This is why I'm now a tad worried. I have a huge feeling Disney didn't want to go the dark horror route Derrickson wanted. They sure as hell better not take two steps back and make Strange like he was in the first film. He needs to be written like he was in the last two Avengers films. Straight across the board, no smart *** attitude similar to Stark.

It might just be because he wanted to focus on Strange but they want SW in this film too.

Who knows.

Well I have to say that was unexpected. Still, pretty obvious what happened. Scott wanted full horror. Big Kev said no, something more cute. Off they went on their seperate ways.

you know who I think would be fun? Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite). He knows how to work with great actors, how to develop characters and do cool shadowy murkiness and vagueness. He would be so much fun

Just saw the news that he had stepped down due to “creative differences”.

First thing I wondered was if this had to do with the movie potentially having to set up a lot inside the MCU and the director not having much to work with in terms of his own vision to a story he would want to tell. Don’t know really.

I liked Doctor Strange but I also think they can find someone able of delivering something equally good or even better.

I reckon part of its down to him wanting more time, given his tweet about release dates
