Resident Evil Reboot

While I absolutely loved the first two games when I was a kid I don't really have any particular reverence for anything else let alone the characters as long as they are superficially present. I think I read the director based Leon in this film off of Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China. That is one of my favorite characters of all time of all time so if it's done well then I'm here for it. The "leading man" who tries his best but keeps failing.

I just want some atmosphere and monster fun.

I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. I mean, these directors seem like fanboys for the source material. Huge fans. But a fan doesn’t mean they have a sense of a compelling story outside a video game though. These films aren’t bad because they don’t respect the source material. They’re bad cause they’re not executed by a strong storyteller.

Thing is, a movie is not a work of one person. Even if the director is a sincere fan who believes in the validity of the source material. . . what about the screenwriter? The actors? And perhaps most importantly, the producer? It takes a team to make a good movie, but one person in the wrong role can definitely make a bad movie. Especially if that role is producer, who ultimately has veto on matters like budget and casting.

Basically, its not a simple matter of one person's opinion, its a generalized cultural headwind.

Watched Resident Evil last night and it was ok, could have been way better. Step up from the Paul Anderson films but the bar was already set pretty low

The film itself was a rushed mess and it was a huge mistake to integrate both RE1 & RE2 into a single movie. The best scenes for me were the ones that took place in the mansion, had a creepy 80s horror movie vibe. I thought that out of the 4 main protagonists, Claire was the best character. Leon was a total joke, nothing like his character from the games. They turned him into a total buffoon for the laughs.

I honestly don’t really care for a sequel. RE1 and RE2 are my favorite games of the series and they already kinda butchered it. And don’t really care to see more of this Leon

Based on reports of people who watched the film you should probably be prepared for a disappointment. Jack might be a goofball, but he's a lovable kind you can rely on... when he doesn't aim his rifle to the ceiling to make a chunk of it fall on his head and lose consciousness.

Yeah after seeing the movie Jack Burton he is not. He didn't bug me as much as some people though but maybe thats because Avan Jogia is nice to look at. Overall the film's first half was very successful in invoking the RE atmosphere and setting things up yet the movie kinda gets dull in the last half.

Why why why? Why it's so hard to adapt a simple storyline to a movie? Why all these unnecessary changes? It's a Ok movie but I don't get why all the changes to a simple storyline... Lisa Trevor totally wasted, Leon totally wasted, Wesker totally wasted..

Because Hollywood feels that they always have to add their own take on these video game properties

The director of this film sold the fans a pack of false goods. He's a total charlatan at every level. A modern day Uwe Boll.

I mean, *every* film adaptation of anything is ultimately "its own take". The difference is that 'Hollywood' doesn't respect video games as an art form, so they don't feel the need to put any effort into understanding and adapting the source. They don't make changes from the original story out of a desire to better fit the new medium, or even to improve the story towards its original intent. They make "changes" largely out of ignorance of and indifference to the original story- they don't know the original story beyond a few marketing bullet points and plot synopsis outlines, and they don't care to know it, because they already "know" that it can't have any value.

As someone who’s seen *every* Uwe Boll videogame movie I have to disagree. The director displayed more talent in just one scene in this movie than Uwe Boll has displayed in any of his filmography in his thirty year old career.

After seeing him put a screaming fish in the 47 Below sequel, I'm not sure I agree.

This was okay, no better or worse than the MK movie. I really liked the cast, with Scodelario being the standout, I just didn’t feel the added stuff with Lisa Trevor was needed. It was nice seeing some bits from the games, but some were executed in a clunky way.

I did like the actor playing Leon, but his writing wasn’t the best, he was too much of a bumbling fool, though it was nice seeing him step up in the finale.

I would watch watch a sequel with this cast, just get a different writer and director next time. 6/10.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Code Veronica sequel with Kaya. There's potential there.

I watched this last night and while it isn't the worst RE movie and I actually like some aspects about I honestly have no interest seeing any kind of follow up movie with these characters and especially this director who seems to have no real respect for any of the OG characters outside of Claire Redfield.

Leon was a complete joke in this and I can't for the life of me understand how the hell this guy became a cop in the first place after seeing all the moronic/dumb things he does.

Wesker was an even bigger miss, but I atleast liked the fact that Tom Hopper gave him some personality and the same goes for Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, but neither of them were given enough to do IMO.

Robbie Amell was alright as Chris Redfield, but I got tired of seeing him mow down zombies in dark hallways and Neil McDonough and Donal Logue brought some fun B-movie energy to this with there scenery chewing.

Kaya Scodelario was by far the biggest highlight in this and had some pretty badass moments, but I really wanted to see the rest of the characters get there time to shine too.

I'll give Johnannes Roberts credit for being able to create some great atmosphere and a solid 70's/80's John Carpenterish score, but relying so heavily on fanservice will only get you so far and my god at how pointless and random Lisa Trevor's inclusion was in this and most of all wasted.
I haven't seen the film but it's interesting you mention Kaya as a highlight, as based on the trailers she just didn't seem like Claire to me.

I know this is fantasy casting and they had no chance of getting her but someone like Emilia Clarke is what I imagined Claire would be like. Full of sincere gusto. Kaya just seemed to be doing a lot of blank guffawing in the trailers.

As a fan of the games I'm sure I'll watch it probably over Christmas.

Kaya does the best with what weak material she's given IMO. This director and these writers really let the actors down though because damn were a lot of talented people wasted in this.

Maybe you will get more enjoyment out of it though than I did.

There is definitely some enjoyment to Be had out of the movie. Just be ready to not like how some characters are written.

Kaya is definitely the stand out though, and she can certainly look good in skinny jeans.

Kaya Scodelario is the only actor who was decently cast who I can see as the character from the games in her and she's capable of playing Claire.

Unfortunately it was a POS movie with an incompetent director and writers.

I can live with changes made to an adaption even if changes make no sense from a choice perspective, aaannnnnnd this makes absolutely zero sense.

I'm just 10 minutes into it and the whole Lisa Trevor thing makes less sense than it does in the game, and she makes no sense there either being an experiment kept unchained in a shack for years before the chaos in the mansion.

I'll be watching the rest of the movie, but I think it might be nearly as bad as Mortal Kombat Annihilation, without being anywhere near as nonsensically hilarious.

While I enjoy the movie, I didn't like the Lisa Trevor stuff at all. Combining RE1 and 2 together just meant there wasn't really time for her in the story, and the story they chose for her just wasnt good or needed.

This is coming out on HBO Max and cinemas in 12 hours.

There is still no RT score nor critics reviews.

A bit concerning.

I mean, hey, lets be fair, it might not be because of a super late embargo.

. . . it might be because the critics forgot that it was coming out. ;)

Movie is already out on VOD after like a month in theaters, lol.
