I want a true unknown for Supes. Like Jackman going into X-Men level unknown, which it feels like we don’t really see anymore with lead characters in superhero projects, at least if they’re adults.

Like Kamala Khan and the girl who’ll play Ironheart seem pretty fresh, but almost everyone else at least has a TV series under their belt by the time they’re cast. I want damn-near anonymity.

Sorry but a "basic unknown" got us Routh and Cavill.

Brandon Routh is a very decent man, honorable, hard working, decent, trustworthy and good. But he was and is at best a tv actor.

Cavill was basically an unknown, but he was bland, boring, dull, insipid, and totally not prepared or talented enough for the role

So you want an unknown, how easy for you. We all try and come up with someone with a history, don't take the easy way out

Yeah, there are plenty of unknowns out there with legitimate talent. Routh’s problem was that he was inexperienced (like, he had barely done anything at all) and Bryan Singer was just so overwhelmed by his real-life charm that he didn’t bother to actually see if he could act (or give him any direction to do so).

Cavill had more experience but he was hampered by a director and script that told him to do nothing but mope and he wasn’t good enough of an actor to elevate the material.

I wouldn’t consider Cavill an unknown going into MOS at all. He’d been working since his teens and had a lead role on reasonably popular cable series. He’d been up for Superman before, and Bond too. This was his first time leading a franchise, but that hardly makes him an unknown.

I consider Jackman’s casting the definitive unknown casting. Unless someone in the states was keeping tabs on Australian musical theater, they might as well have cast someone right off the street.

jetage, I gotta ask, what did Henry Cavill do to you lol? Almost every time you mention him you go outta your way to trash the man. You have even bring him up when nobody has mentioned him or the convo is not about him. Just something I've noticed for a while.

In terms of unknown vs known. I don't care so long as the actor can act and bears resemblance to Superman.

Do you know these men personally?

In reality, we only know of the actors onscreen behavior- action and re-actions... which are dictated and accepted by the director. They shoot scenes until the director gets the "performance" and emotion they are looking for. If for example an actor is not emotional or empathic or happy "enough" (for the viewer) in a scene it is not the fault of the actor. It is a choice by the director. Some do it better than others but usually a good director can get a decent performance from a decent actor, just ask Richard Gere!.

Funny is a different animal.

Even putting aside the work he'd done before MOS, he was one of many fancasted names floating around messageboards pre Superman Returns.

Christopher Reeve , was on a Soap Opera called Love Of Life

He's a JC Penny commercial he did in 1974

Matt Bomer really had all the right qualities for Superman except he's teeny tiny.

When I first saw Cavill 's name being tossed around online , I think he was like 21, maybe 22 tops.
He was a kid, which was one of the knocks against him then.
It was fresh off of Count Of Monte Cristo.

Heck, he was still considered too young to get Bond when he was up for the role during the casting of Casino Royale .
