I agree that Jonathan doesn’t have to die for the Superman origin to work. But Jonathan’s death — often presented as an instigating factor in “the hero’s journey” — long predates the Donner movie. Indeed, in some stories, both parents have passed away. From (according to the internet) 1963:I'd love to see Russel as Jonathan Kent, my main thing is I just want Jonathan Kent to actually be alive, ever since Donner's film live action Superman (except Lois and Clark) has largely treated killing off Jonathan Kent before Clark becomes Superman as a requirement and it bugs me. You don't need to kill him off just to teach Clark a lesson, there are a million ways for him to learn those lessons, I want them to be more creative than to just dredge up the dead parent cliche. Clark already has two dead parents, they don't need to add a third.
