X-Men ‘97 X-Men ‘97 News and Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS!!!!)

Funny enough, I was worried that not going right into Lifedeath 2 would be a letdown, and then BOOM, this episode hit. I think we've earned the reprieve.
Heh I did think that was going to be a filler episode.

I don’t mind them setting up Lifedeath to go back to after. Also that Jubilee episode was really fun but it’s good if they have the flexibility to not stretch it out for a full episode if they see fit. I don’t really have much idea what’s coming next, the show is certainly not predictable, an even bigger plus in a nostalgia show. That’s the difference when you have people who really love the material involved rather than people just completing a job before moving to the next one.

Why the **** is this so good? Best Marvel Disney Plus content since Moon Knight (episode 5).
Never thought I will hear Ace of Base, my first favorite music when I was a child, in a Marvel series.

With the mixed reception to the MCU shows, the seemingly disdainful view towards animation from some execs, the early word that the animation was zero effort and with the main creator getting fired, my hopes for this were not high at all. It’s a massive surprise to me, a real treat that we are getting something that is getting most old X-fans back, united and excited again.

I also could never have predicted getting Ace of Base in an animated comic show. :funny: Loved them when I was younger too.

If this level of quality can be maintained, I'm actually not seeing the need for a live action version of this anymore. Like I'm good where we are now. Just an amazing episode through and through.
Honestly? I agree.

Specially if we get spin-offs on this same level. I keep bringing up these spin-offs because I love this entire universe, and it would be awesome other characters getting a spot light too.

A live action version that is closer to the comics scratches a different itch for me. I want animation to continue long term through this series or a modern one after it’s done, but I definitely want live action MCU X-Men too.

I wasn't expecting much at all aside from a nostalgia trip. I certainly didn't expect something this stellar.

Ding ding ding.

Marvel is in the rebuilding phase with the X-Men, and '97 is the perfect appetizer. A few people criticized the music & character designs of the X-Men in Doctor Strange and The Marvels as "cheap nostalgia grabs" when, in fact, they feel more like a branding exercise. This is what Marvel wants the X-Men to look like. That guitar riff should be as iconic as any John Williams theme. The FOX movies, particularly the latter half, damaged the brand.

The 90s series was widespread, and the X-Men comics were always a top seller. So why did no film (sans Deadpool) cross 300 million domestically? I remember seeing the first trailer for X1 and thinking, "That doesn't look like the X-Men." :tearsofjoy: Cut to Spider-Man doing gangbusters the following year.

i don’t understand when people say this. X-MEN should have animation, live action film & streaming, video games they shouldn’t just be relegated to X-MEN ‘97.. this show is just to return the excitement to the franchise after Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix, & Nee Mutants failures and get casuals introduced to the world to make it a billion dollar franchise

I wonder if they are going to at least touch on the aftermath of Remember it in Lifedeath Part 2 because it seems a bit odd to have Lifedeath Part 1 as half an episode then have a completely different episode in the middle then have Lifedeath part 2 afterwards. There must be some relevance to having it in that order.

I'll clarify then, although I don't think it was hard to understand. I didn't say the X-Men should only be relegated to a cartoon. For me, this show is how I wanted these characters, action, and stories portrayed since I was a kid reading the comics. I suppose it's possible a live action adaptation could do the same, but it's not as important to me since this show is around.

I wonder if that giant bird monster that kidnapped Storm is going to be something to do with Shadow King. I just got that vibe when it showed up.

Apparently, it’s a comic book character called The Adversary, and it even calls itself by that name at the very end of the episode. I watched a video that said that it plays a role in the comic arc that this episode and part two is adapting, and it is very tied to Forge and his culture. Hence him saying, “Get away from her, you damn demon!”, right before getting bit and thrown right against the wall by it.

Though, it never took the form of a demonic owl in the comics, which is intriguing. Be interesting to see if the show gives an explanation for why that is.

Yeah. The live action is more than welcome. But this show is keeping me very, very, very well fed. To a point I don't feel starved for a live action as I was a year ago.

Both are different. Both are good. I'm just pretty happy as a fan now.

Edit:

I'm just pretty happy as a fan now.
Correction: This is a lie. I just need a very good game now, then I'll be fine.

I will say, as good of writing as this show has had, I’m a little tired of killing off the love interests of women as some sort of “you’ll be stronger for it!” mentality. Gambit literally says in the episode that the white picket reward isn’t for a scoundrel like him and Nightcrawler reassures him that love is forgiveness and then at the end it’s like “sike! You’re right. No happy ending for you. Die with the thought that the woman you love doesn’t love you back!” I find that needlessly cruel and it’s a trope I’m not too fond of. Killing off the men to develop a woman’s story doesn’t sit right with me.

Especially since the writers are dead set on telling the fans that death is permanent in this show.

/end rant

Doesn't sound good for our boy

In both directions... women have obviously been dealing with it much worse for years, and we've largely accepted now that fridging is uncool, so that doesn't mean now its payback time and poor innocent motherf***in' Gambit has to die for the drama!

Quote from Head Director, Jake Castorena:

The decision was never finite, like, 'We're doing this, we're killing so and so and that's it.' This might scare fans, but it changed a bit, it bounced around on who it would be because for sake of story, for sake of pushing character arcs and tying everything in, based on where story trajectory was going, [it] was based on what character it was going to be. But ultimately, obviously, we landed on Gambit and Magneto. We know someone, a.k.a. Rogue, who is, especially in our show, who was very much intertwined with both."

"I implore audiences to ponder and be curious about what that would do to someone of Rogue's caliber and potential, I would say focus less on what we have lost and I would focus on more who or what lies ahead, if that makes sense for you. But ultimately, at the end of the day, Gambit and Magneto are dead and we'll have to watch the series unfold to further understand what those consequences are going to be for not just for our team but for potentially for the rest of the world."

Quote from Head Director, Jake Castorena:
That makes Rogue's actions even worse between the start of the series and episode 5. They literally shoehorned the Magneto/Rogue relationship in to force a love triangle and crashed the Gambit/Rogue relationship all so they could kill Gambit off and go "we'll see how Rogue grows from this". At this point in time, Rogue is a cheating ***** and Gambit deserved so much better than her.

I love when people use terms like “shoehorned” and “forced” to justify their displeasure.

TAG YOUR SPOILERS! For movies in general we keep it at a 2 week time frame for spoilers and that's essentially the standard. I already gave you 1 point for doing it another day. I will not provide another warning.

This applies to everyone as well....TAG SPOILERS! It's not just common courtesy, it's a rule. If this becomes a major issue, I will start handing out mandatory vacations.

Finally got around to watching this episode and wow, absolutely gut-wrenching. I share some sentiments that
Gambit still had lots of story left on the table.... but isn't that true of real life tragedies? That's the cruel truth of tragedy... the victims don't get to have their story end the way it should.

Don't you be comin in here with your real world facts and logic! :argh:
