Xbox Xbox Series X Thread

I didn't pre-order ps4 or xbox one and didn't find them stocked at any store until feburary. I had gone to Best Buy for something and they had a game sale for select titles for $30. So I got an xbox one and 2 games then a couple of months later I got a ps4

true. it does feel like MS is slowly laying the groundworks for a possible exit of the console hardware business. If the PS5 outsells the Series X by a healthy margin like the PS4 did to the X1, then I wouldn't be surprised if we hear MS announce they will no longer make Xbox consoles and just focus on Game Pass and XCloud. Not saying this will happen, just that I wouldn't be shocked if it does.

At the very least, future Xbox consoles may take a much different form. Perhaps a small device like a Roku or Amazon Fire stick that just plugs into your TV and lets you stream games via Game Pass and XCloud.
I doubt they'll stop making hardware considering their next console is called "Series X" after all so we may expect Series Y or Series X2.

I think they might go the smartphone route so instead of generations it will be "refresh models" but not necessarily at yearly rate. Something like their Surface line for tablets I suppose. I'm sure they're far from their Windows Phone brand...

The whole streaming business might even affect Sony so who knows in the 10th or 11th gen... They might be no longer consoles but 100% streaming.

Understandable but a shame. I was already thinking about holding off from getting a next gen console until sometime next year and this is a new reason why

Unfortunately, this is also not a good look for the Xbox brand in general.

They only had ONE major exclusive title planned for this year (compared to Sony which has already delivered 3 big exclusives in the 1st half of the year), and they still couldn't get it done on time.

A nice Thanksgiving for some people this year

Oh thanks. So less than 3 months!
yes. and still no price info or launch lineup confirmation from either company! We still don't know how much we'll be paying or what exactly we'll be playing when the next-gen arrives! :D

They’ve probably both got a “don’t go first” policy, after what happened at that E3 before the current generation with Sony announcing the cheaper price going second in the conference.

yeah. I understand why both companies are taking this approach. Sony undercutting MS with their PS4 price announcement was probably the "knockout" blow to the Xbox One which had already wounded itself with that disastrous reveal and those initial policies. As many have since commented, Sony "won" this gen with that price announcement.

So, price is key. And at this point, barring some last-minute surprise 1st party launch title, price is about the only card MS has left to play with. Which means, they will either take an even bigger loss on the Series X by pricing it ultra competitively to undercut the PS5. Or, they will price the Series S ultra competitively and hope more people buy the Series S instead of the Series X. But that would mean undercutting the Series X in favor of the Series S. And that would just further reveal that MS is more interested in just getting people into its ecosystem and Gamepass rather than deliver a true next-gen experience for gamers. It's becoming more obvious that is already the case, but sacrificing the Series X for the weaker Series S would just further confirm that.

But other than a $100 or more price advantage, I really don't see what other options MS has at this point. And I'm sure Sony is keenly aware that it would not look good for them to have the more expensive console with technically weaker specs.

Hence, this long game of chicken, which frankly is starting to get tiresome. As well as this slow drip-drip of information. Frankly, my hype and excitement levels for either next-gen console is starting to wane. Depending on the PS5 launch lineup, I'm now even starting to debate whether it's worth it to buy the PS5 at launch. I'm not exactly in a rush to upgrade to next-gen.

Both consoles don't have a lot of high profiled launch titles. You can play the new Avengers,Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed, Cyberpunk in the ps4 pro/XB1 and I seriously doubt there are drastic changes compare to the new consoles. Longer loading time isn't that a big deal to me as long as the games don't lag.

Getting the new consoles is really for the hardcore gamers that can't wait and must need to play Miles Morales and GodFall as soon as they are available to play. I got the ps4 in 2017 and I already played all the ps4 games from 2013 to 2018 that I really want to play. While there are like a more or less a dozen games for the ps4 that I'm just currently wait to go under the 30 dollars.

agreed.

And I was under the assumption that for those big 3rd party titles this Holiday, like Cyberpunk and AC, either the next-gen versions of those games would be available to buy at console launch or else they'd get their free next-gen upgrade patches in time for console launch.

However, I'm hearing more and more that those free next-gen upgrades won't be coming until 2021. So, if that's the case, why would I want to buy and play those games now if my intent was to treat those as next-gen "launch" titles for my new next-gen console? I'll just wait till the next-gen versions or patches come out in 2021. But that gives me even less reason to buy a PS5 now at launch.

Might as well just wait until next year when those next-gen upgrades start rolling out and when games like Guilty Gear Strive or perhaps Ratchet and Clank (if it's not a launch title) start releasing. If the only next-gen games at the PS5 launch are Spider-Man: MM and Godfall, then honestly, neither of those are enough to make me go out and buy a brand-new console because I don't consider either of those as strong "must-play" titles.

Same with the Series X. If I were to get that, might as well just wait until Halo Infinite actually comes out next year and until I get clearer timelines on games like Avowed, Everwild, and Fable.

I watched gameranx's most anticipated games for the rest of 2020. The only eXclusive that was mentioned that is coming out to the Ps5 is Miles Morales. GodFall is available for the pc. Senua/Halo are obviously not going to come out this year for the Xbox (and if they were its also on pc/iinw xbox one as well). So yeah. These new consoles are really for the hardcore gamers/tech junkies or people who doesn't own the ps4/Xbox one. The more I think about it, I really should wait til the next summer.

But who knows, if Sony and Microsoft would announce more games that won't come out this year for the ps4, pc and Xbox.

If Microsoft want to compete at all I agree they need a price advantage of $100 which is probably asking too much. With Halo gone it's going to be hard for them to generate excitement. On top of that with it not looking too great at the show, I feel they are in trouble as people seemed to be genuinely giving the Series X a chance ahead of that disappointing show.

so true.

I wouldn't say the current situation for the Xbox is 2013-level bad. But, I think it's safe to say they are in a weaker position now, hype, excitement, and relevance wise for the new console, than they were at the start of the year or late last year.

Which is actually disappointing, because up until a few months ago, MS/Xbox seemed to be hitting all the right notes. Starting with the surprise Series X (and Hellblade 2) reveal last year, and then all the frequent updates revealing information about the console, BC, and their vision for next-gen. They talked loudly and talked a lot, and everything they said seemed so transparent and consumer friendly. It was like, lookout Sony, Xbox is back, they've learned their lesson, and this time they're serious and not playing around.

And then, however, it came time to start "showing" the goods and that's when things started falling apart. First, with the initial May "gameplay" show. Then the July event with the underwhelming Halo showcase. And now with the Halo delay news itself. It has been a series of fumbles, missteps, and disappointing news coming out of camp Xbox. And that adds to the uphill battle Xbox was already facing.

So now, I feel they could well be in a very vulnerable position. Unless MS wows with the price or some surprise launch title announcements, Sony could come in with potentially another knockout blow if their next event is strong. All it takes is a competitive price for the PS5 that will be hard for MS to beat and the reveal of a solid launch lineup. Think Miles plus Ratchet and/or Gran Turismo with Godfall, a smaller title like Kena, and perhaps a few more surprises of their own. IMO, it will be very hard for MS to counter that, especially without Halo.

hopefully there will be some more surprise launch title announcements. at the very least, confirmation of the launch lineup and price will be the key factors that will determine whether I preorder the PS5 and get it at launch or wait till next year.
