2014/2015 NHL Thread: Hawks!

If Chicago can keep a core of playoff-performing talent together, the Bolts would be wise to follow the same model.

I refuse to give back the Cup until Edmonton forfeits their draft pick! :argh:

The changes that McJesus brought about in the Oilers organization is already enough. For me, even if he doesn't end up being anything spectacular, the overhaul Oilers fan have been looking for for 8 years is finally here.

Also, yay Chicago! I hope Kane gets super drunk and makes a speech again.

Connor hasn't been drafted yet. I'm still expecting Lowe to lose the #1 pick to Jim Benning in a game of "guess what number I'm thinking of right now."

Congrats to the Blackhawks. Pretty exciting series. Wish it could've gone one more.

I had a feeling Stamkos hitting the post and then getting stuffed on the breakaway in the 2nd was an ominous sign for their chances of winning last night. Crazy that Bishop played the last 3 games with a torn groin.

My office is right on Monroe in the midst of the parade. ****.

Worst kept secret of all time

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-to-announce-opening-of-expansion-process/

Barring something unforeseen, commissioner Gary Bettman will emerge from today’s board of governors meeting at the Bellagio Hotel and announce that the league is opening a formal expansion process, according to several sources.

Bettman is expected to leave the process open-ended: The NHL is ready to entertain bids, but won’t commit to a specific number of teams. It will likely end up being two, but no guarantees will be made.

The significance of the announcement being made in Las Vegas shouldn't be lost on anyone. An arena is well on its way to completion here just off the strip behind the New York-New York casino and prospective owner Bill Foley has taken deposits for more than 11,500 season ticket

Yeah, I don't much care for expansion either. I don't see the point of going into highly questionable hockey markets (I assume it will be two new American teams) just to get some short-term expansion dollars.

I just hope the expansion process is above board, and not rigged like it was with Florida and Anaheim.

Big draft tonight

Obviously barring a nuclear winter, McDavid goes to Edmonton (sigh) and Eichel goes to Buffalo, but from there on out things could get pretty interesting.

Arizona picks 3rd and could go Hanifin or Strome or even, as I've heard rumored, deal the pick to BOS for Dougie Hamilton.

You've also got some guys like Kessel, Lucic, Okposo, Talbot, etc. that could be traded at the draft table.

Damnit, Calgary and Los Angeles got a lot harder to play against next season. :(

Doug Hamilton to the Flames...
That D is going to look really good next year.

:yay:

Oshie wasn't moved, ****.

Don't be shocked if the Flames win the division next season. Your top 2 defencemen are better than any of the defencemen on the Ducks or Canucks.

Still can't believe the Oilers got the first pick again. NHL really needs to implement a rule where a team can only get a 1st pick once per every 5 years. The Oilers made little attempt to improve their team these past years. There's no reason a team should be that terrible for so long. They do a poor job of developing players too.

One thing about my team, the Caps is they really know how to find talent. Goalie Vitek Vanecek, defensemen Madison Bowey and Connor Carrick, and RW Jakub Vrana. They make the worst trades though.

.

Oilers finished a distant 3rd worst this past season, it's not like they were actively tanking like Buffalo and to a lesser extent, Arizona. They just have good "lottery luck."

This is true. I would have felt sorry for Buffalo had they not deliberately tanked. That being said, Eichel is still a crazy good player.

McDavid coming to Edmonton has finally sparked the changes that us fans have been waiting for for 9 years. It's unfortunate it took this long, but I'm happy it finally happened.

I love what Chiarelli is doing with the Oilers. Lowe and MacT were re-building for years. Chiarelli did it in 5 days.

Edmonton looks like they are finally working on building a sound defence, though we'll have to see how well they'll work as a unit and with their goalies. They could use a veteran power forward who can play in the top 2 lines, even if it means trading away someone like Eberle or Yakupov.

Yeah, I don't think the Canucks are going to be trying for the playoffs next season, unless they make some moves that aren't just for draft picks.

We finally got rid of Oshie! Good riddance!

Backstrom, Ovechkin, Oshie: the BOO line.

Ovi and Backstrom have never had a legitimate scorer on the other side (not counting Johannson as he's a natural center). I don't see how Oshie doesn't put 30+ goals playing along side an elite scorer in Ovi and top setup-man like Backstrom.

Though, I wouldn't be surprised if Oshie ends up with Kuznetsov and Burakovsky with JW on the top line with Ovi and Backstrom.

Not an earth-shattering signing, but Shawn Matthias is a good player, and the Leaf fans are going to behind this guy.
