Project History
With the massive success of Titanic , and it's recent Oscar Wins, James Cameron is the King Of The World .
Columbia Pictures is eager to move forward with Cameron helmed Spiderman film , and quickly push the film into production for a 1999 shooting schedule, and a 2000 release date.
While the project has languished in development since the 90s, Columbia Pictures in partnership with MGM , are ready to move forward with the film.
Script
Cameron decides to make drastic changes to his original scriptment from the 90s .
He tosses out Carlton Strand aka Electro ,and Boyd ,aka Sandman ,as the villains, in favor of one of Spiderman's more well known foes, Doctor Octopus
The Carlton Strand aka Electro, CEO villain role, instead is shifted to the character Norman Osborn, who in this script,
Plays more a manipulator role ,and is set up for sequels to return as the villainous , Green Goblin
Peter's journey remains unchanged from the original scriptment.
He's still a high school senior whose origin closely mirrors the comics .
The script ends with Doc Ock 's capture , Peter and MJ becoming a couple , and with Peter narrating the story
Casting
Columbia and MGM both agree' with Cameron that his Titanic Lead, DiCaprio is the perfect actor to play Spiderman.
At the same time, they also want his Titanic costar Kate Winslet to play the hero's love interest, MJ, hoping that lightening will strike twice with the pair.
For Doc Ock, Cameron has one person in mind, his Terminator and True Lies star, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Though Schwarzenegger is wary of taking on another comicbook villain role after Batman And Robin, Cameron convinces him that Doc will be played as a true [BGCOLOR=initial]menace[/BGCOLOR] and threat , in addition to being a frightening opponent.
Inspired by the recent Ultimates run, the Parts of Aunt May and Uncle Ben skew much younger with True Lies's Jamie Lee Curtis taking on the role of May ,and Bill Paxton taking the role of Uncle Ben.
Former Aliens and Terminator actor ,Lance Henricksen, is one of the last actors cast to play the manipulative Norman Osborn
R Lee Ermey is cast as the comical blowhard J .Jonah Jameson ,along with Joe Morton, of T2 as Robbie Robertson
Matthew Lillard of Scream is cast in the role of Peter Parker's long time tormentor Flash Thompson
THE FANTASTIC FOUR ( 1997)

Project History
For two decades, The idea of a Fantastic Four Feature film kicks around Hollywood, but nothing comes to fruition beyond "hopes" of a film.
In the mid 90s, the project finally begins to build up steam as director Chris Columbus Of Home Alone and Nine Months fame, helms the project with his own screenwriters.
However, the competing Roger Corman Fantastic Four film threatens to undermine the big budget , high profile ,spectacle, that Columbus and 20th Century Fox have in mind.
After much wrangling, the Corman film is shelved, and the Columbus film begins to move forward aiming for a 1996 shooting schedule and a fall 1997 release date.
Script
The films script follows very much mirrors The Fantastic Four's origins from the comics , and features Doctor Doom , as The teams ultimate nemesis.
The plan is for the film to have the family friendly tone of Columbus's other hit films, while respecting the source material , and creating an out of this world
blockbuster.
The Production models the film off of Donner's Superman film, as opposed to the campier comicbook movies of the era.
The script deals with the interpersonal relationships of the 4 team members, while also tackling the up and downsides of fame and over exposure.
Reed is very much characterized as the Smartest man on Earth, who at times, lacks self awareness , but is never the less kind hearted.
Sue Storm, with her own quirks, is portrayed as the down to earth glue which holds the team together despite their conflicting personalities.
Johnny Storm is portrayed as a hot shot pilot and playboy who eats up the teams new found fame but often uses humor and swagger as a means of hiding his own fears.
Ben Grimm is portrayed as the member of the team who feels the most alienated by his transformation , but still has a heart of gold underneath his rock like skin.
Doctor Doom, as in the comics, is Reed's ultimate nemesis , and Tyrant of Latveria, with the goal of destroying the Fantastic Four at the height of their fame
Casting
While real life celebrity couple Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid are long rumored to be attached to the roles of Reed and Sue, Columbus has a much different actor in mind for Reed .
He turns to Jeff Goldblum , hot off the heals of a string of hits including Jurassic Park , Independence Day, and Nine Months, which Columbus directed.
He feels Goldblum has the perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and vulnerability , to portray the smartest man on the planet.
While rejecting the idea of Quaid as Reed, Columbus and studio execs embrace the idea of Meg Ryan as Sue Storm, and after her chemistry read with Goldblum,
the producers feel both vets play off each other well, in terms of comic timing, and romantic chemistry.
The role of The Thing goes to TV and Film actor John Goodman, with the film The Babe, standing out as spot lighting Goodman's ability to be humorous, vulnerable, and loveable,
in addition to his physical presence.
Lesser know tv actor Casper Van Dien is cast in the role as the teams heartthrob Johnny Storm , with the director feeling that Dien has stepped directly off of the comics page.
The coveted role of Doctor Doom goes to veteran actor Armand Assante ,whose charisma and dynamic presence seems to be the perfect fit for the larger than life Marvel Comics villain.
Julianne Moore , who originally tested for the role of Sue Storm, is cast as The Thing's comicbook love interest Alicia Masters.
