THE UNCANNY X MEN ( 1985)
Director : John Badham
Music : Brad Fidel
1699223321390.png

Project History
In the fall of 1983, the 20th anniversary of the debut of The Uncanny X Men, Orion Pictures feels that it's the perfect sci fi , Superhero property to bring to the big screen.

Unlike Superman, Hulk, and Spiderman, The X Men remain largely unknown to the general public in the early 1980s.

With it's themes of prejudice, alienation , and teen anxiety, Producers feel that all the elements are in place to capture the teen and 20 something audience with a slick, lower budget, adaptation.

Director John Badham of Saturday Night Fever and War Games is tasked to bring The X Men to the big screen for a Summer 1985 release date .

Script
In order to keep the film under budget , Producers decide two focus on 5 team members whose powers could be replicated with the limits of 1980s visual effects .

They decide to comprise the team of Cyclops, Storm , Jean Grey, Wolverine, and Shadowcat , who is the lead character of the film, and our guide into the world of Mutants.

Professor X of course would be the groups leader , with Magneto serving as film's the sole Mutant villain, on a quest to recruit more mutants to create The Brotherhood .

The film ends with the X Men battling, and barely defeating, Magneto , leaving the door open for sequels.

Casting

The Cast for the film is made up of character actors as opposed to Marquee names.

Fred Ward ( The Right Stuff) , being one of the more well known cast members is the first to be cast as the team loner and maverick Wolverine.

Michael Pare ( Streets Of Fire) and Laurie Singer ( Footloose) are cast as the iconic Marvel couple , Cyclops and Jean Grey.

Singer and Actress Grace Jones( A View To A Kill) is cast as Storm, while A Nightmare On Elm Street actress Heather Langenkamp , is chosen as the film's lead Shadowcat.

The parts of the diametrically opposed one time friends Professor X and Magneto go to British actor Charles Dance and Netherlands actor Rutger Hauer

THE FANTASTIC FOUR ( 1997)
Director : Chris Columbus
View attachment 71917

Project History
For two decades, The idea of a Fantastic Four Feature film kicks around Hollywood, but nothing comes to fruition beyond "hopes" of a film.
In the mid 90s, the project finally begins to build up steam as director Chris Columbus Of Home Alone and Nine Months fame, helms the project with his own screenwriters.
However, the competing Roger Corman Fantastic Four film threatens to undermine the big budget , high profile ,spectacle, that Columbus and 20th Century Fox have in mind.

After much wrangling, the Corman film is shelved, and the Columbus film begins to move forward aiming for a 1996 shooting schedule and a fall 1997 release date.

It sure would be something if the Corman film had been released, at least an official rather than bootleg video release, in 1995-1996 or 1997, it would be notorious but probably pretty quickly forgotten to where a blockbuster film still could have been made by 2003-2006.

Mr. Fantastic : Jeff Goldblum ( Independence Day)

He would be off the wall in a way that could really work and feel true to the spirit of the original comic and character. I think, despite the success of Independence Day and role in Nine Months he would probably still be a little too unconventional for Columbus.

View attachment 71910
The Thing : John Goodman ( The Babe)

He could do really well stretching into drama.

View attachment 71916

Alicia Masters : Julianne Moore ( Nine Months)

Really like the idea of what she could do with and bring to even a small role.

View attachment 71888
Uncle Ben : Bill Paxton

Not bad but a little too young and contemporary and generally not a lot of warmth (hard for me not to associate him, let alone again directed by Cameron, with Aliens). Although most directors other than Raimi probably would have de-aged and/or cast a pretty bland actor as Uncle Ben.

He could do well as Norman.

SPIDER-MAN ( 1986)
Director and writer : John Hughes
1699888166710.png

Project History
Plans for a Spiderman feature film go back to the late 1970s, with several scripts written between then and the mid 1980s .
However, each script is rewritten, rejected, then rewritten again, with no end in sight .

However , things begin to change as writer director John Hughes , takes an interest in the potential Spiderman film .
Hughes feels the themes of teen alienation, struggles of identity, the journey of a boy into a man, and the natural comedy which comes from that tragedy
fits perfectly in the type of films he's written and directed .

Hughes also likes the idea of a nerdy kid getting superpowers but being unable to tell everyone, including the girl he loves .

After Hughes makes his pitch for a teen dramedy Spiderman film, Producers are impressed and allows Hughes to Direct and script the project.

Filming begins in Hughes favorite local Chicago for many of the high school and Queens suburbs scenes and films a few notable action sequences in Manhattan , including the New York Stock Exchange.
The filming commences in 1985 and is completed in early 1986 for a December 1986 release date.

Script
Hughes's script covers the origins of Spiderman sticking closely to the original comic with some deviations .
In the script , Otto Octavius aka Doc Ock is Peter's High School Science teacher and the boys only friend aside from his tomboy, and fellow outcast friend ,MJ .

Peter's accident is the result of one of Octavius's Lab experiment's gone haywire,
in which a radio active bites Peter and Octavius is fused to his mechanical arms he's used for the experiment.

As in the comics , Peter eventually discovers he has powers , creates the Spiderman suit to profit on tv , Uncle Ben's murder at the hands of the Burglar he let go , etc.

Octavius becomes Doctor Octopus after the Midtown High administrators fire Ock, and destroy his reputation.
He seeks out vengeance against the teachers and administrators at Midtown , putting him directly in the Path of his former student Peter Parker aka Spiderman

The head administrator of the School is Wilson Allen , who is the father of Head Cheerleader and Peter's High School crush , Liz Allen.
Wilson Allen is Ock's number one target , putting Spiderman and Ock on a collusion course which culminates , in John Hughes fashion, in a final battle at the prom .

In the midst of Peter's ongoing struggle is MJ discovers Peter is Spiderman and carry's the burden of knowing the truth.

In typical Hughes fashion, Peter considers MJ " just a friend" , while she suffers in silence loving him ,while he is taken with the popular Liz Allen, who doesn't really know he exists.

Flash Thompson is Liz's Boyfriend, and Peter's bully as in the comics, however, he becomes one of Spiderman's greatest supporters.

The film ultimately ends with Spiderman defeating Doc Ock , with hopes that there is still good in his former friend as he's arrested and taken away.

The love quadrangle is resolved with Liz no curious and smitten with the mysterious Spiderman , yet , still aloof to Peter .

All the while , Peter realizes how much he cares about MJ after she's nearly killed by Ock,
However he's too late to tell MJ what he's feeling, as MJ leaves the prom with a student named Harry who spent the prom comforting MJ and, who admits he's always had a crush on her
from a far.

In the end , though confused and a bit heartbroken , Peter swings off into the sunset with a world of problems on his mind , yet with the satisfaction that he's keeping his promise to Uncle Ben, and the contentment that he was able to save the school and become the hero he's meant to be.

Casting
In casting the film , Hughes has only one actor in mind for Peter Parker , Anthony Michael Hall of Breakfast Club and Weird Science.
For the role of Mary Jane he turns to another one of his stable of young actors , Molly Ringwald , writing the role with her in mind.

For the stunning, yet distant, Liz Allen, Hughes chooses his Ferris Bueller leading lady , Mia Sara .

For the role of Doc Ock, Hughes enlists Taxi and Back To The Future actor Christopher Lloyd feeling that he can walk the fine line between Menace, Mania, and heart.

For the role of Peter's Aunt and Uncle , Hughes goes to veteran tv and film actors Katherine Helmond and Paul Dooley, while Paul Gleason is cast in the role as Ock's nemesis and Liz's dad Wilson Allen.

Some Kind Of Wonderful actor Craig Sheffer rounds out the cast as Flash Thompson.

Reception
Like Hughes's other films, Spiderman becomes a sleeper success becoming extremely popular with teen and family audiences alike .
Through word of mouth , the film stays in theaters for several months from the winter of 1986 through the Spring of 1987.
The Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring acts as varied Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, The Bangles, Katrina And Waves ,and numerous others, stays at the top of the album charts,
And promo film music videos run endlessly in rotation on MTV .

After making a huge profit plans are underway for a Spiderman : Part 2 to hit theaters Christmas of 1989 .

IRON-MAN ( 2000)
Director : Rob Reiner
Producers : Tom Cruise and Paul Wagner
Screenplay : Ted Elliot , Terry Rossio and Tim McCanlies
1699889591775.png

Project
Among the several Marvel comics related film projects in development at New Line Cinema in the 1990s , is an adaptation of Iron Man.
Several different screenwriters turn in drafts which feature the origin of the character but differ drastically in the villains and love interests.
Additional Several filmmakers , including Quentin Tarantino are approached to direct the project , a director ultimately isn't chosen.

When actor / producer Tom Cruise and his production partner Paul Wagner expresses interest in the property , New Line jumps at the chance to work with proven and popular,
box office draw . After Cruise reads the script , he agrees to join the project , though he insists on choosing the director, Producing the project, and mandating rewrites to the script.

New Line readily agree given Cruise's proven track record .

For the director's chair , Cruise reteams with his , A Few Good Men , director Rob Reiner

Cruise feels he can ground the high tech , out of this world property, in reality .
Filming begins for the Project in 1999 with a Summer 2000 release date.

Script
The screenplay written by Ted Elliot , Terry Rossio and Tim McCanlies focuses on reckless playboy and industrialist Tony Stark's capture by The Mandarin, escape from The Mandarin, and his journey to becoming The Iron Man .

However , added to the script as a secondary antagonist is Justin Hammer , a long time business rival of the Stark family, and his daughter Justine Hammer, who, as it turns out,
is lovers with the Mandarin , and secretly works with Mandarin to take down Stark and her Father , in order to merge the two companies with Justine as the head .

Though several love interests are considered , Pepper Potts ultimately becomes Stark's love interest for the film .
Jim Rhodes and Nick Fury are also added to the script to future expand Tony Stark's supporting cast .

Casting
With Tom Cruise taking the lead role , the next role which is quickly filled is the role of Pepper Potts, who is to be played by Cruise's wife , actress Nicole Kidman.
Having already starred opposite each other in Days Of Thunder, Far And Away, and Eyes Wide Shut , Kidman seems like a natural to play Tony Starks on again ,off again, love interest.

Cruise's Jerry Maguire co-star Cuba Gooding Jr. is cast as Tony's babysitter, and friend, Col James Rhodes .

The Role of The Mandarin goes to
Crouching Tiger , Hidden Dragon thesp, Chow Yun Fat , while the role of the Machiavellian Justine Hammer, goes to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones, hot off of The Mask Of Zorro, Entrapment, and The Haunting.

Veteran actor Christopher Plummer is cast in the role of Justin Hammer , while Ed Harris plays a smaller supporting role as the iconic Nick Fury.

John Neville rounds out the cast as Stark's befuddled butler Edwin Jarvis and James Hong is cast in the crucial role of Ho Yinsen.

SPIDER-MAN PART II ( 1989)
Director : Chris Columbus
1700519445536.png

Project
With the first Hughes Spiderman becoming a sleeper success at the box office , , the plans for a Spiderman Part 2 ,were a forgone conclusion.

However, by the time a second film went into production, prior commitments, and lack of interest by the films original stars, would mean that the second film would end up looking very different from the first film.

Firstly, Director John Hughes decides to opt out of writing and directing a sequel.
Hughes feels that he's "made his mark" on the character, and considered his original script as a self contained story.
While willing to consult and serve as an executive producer, Hughes was interested in moving onto other projects.

As a result, the onus fell to Adventures In Babysitting director Chris Columbus to take over the directing duties.

With Hughes walking away from the project, his Spiderman, Breakfast Club, and 16 candles stars, also move away from another Spiderman film.

Molly Ringwald, in particular , wants to move away from her teen star image ,and move to more adult roles, as the 1980s draws to a close.

The lead himself, Anthony Michael Hall , also has prior commitments, and does not want to be type casted as a superhero .

As was the case of sequels to other 80s hit films like Teen Wolf, Spiderman Part 2, would also see a change in leads and filmmakers at the helm.

With Columbus now directing, the film would begin production in 1988 with a Christmas 1989 release date.

Script
After the success of Spiderman , The producers want the second film to be bigger and better than ever , promising a special fx extravaganza , worthy of the comics .

The plan is to pit Spiderman against The Sinister Six, led by a returning Doc Ock , seeking revenge on Spider-Man for ruining his plans.

Doc Ock organizes an escape from prison with five of his fellow prisoners, all of whom, were captured by Spiderman in over the past few years.
Making up the Dirty Dozen like team are Doc Ock, The Vulture, Sandman, Kraven The Hunter , Electro , and The Scorpion, all intent on killing the wallcrawler once and for all.

Meanwhile Peter is at risk of failing his senior year of High School , due to his duties as Spider-man .

All the while , his friendship with MJ is strained as she dates the Rich and Popular Harry Osborn .

Harry see's the connection between Peter and MJ, which also puts a strain on their romance .

Ultimately, Peter's two lives come to a head , as his strained relationships and his bitter enemies , all take center stage on the Empire States Building .

The Screenwriters take inspiration from Superman 2 , in which the hero must face multiple, and equally matched opponents, while at the same time, struggles between his own needs ,and his commitments as a hero.

Originally ,characters such as Daily Bugle editor J Jonah Jameson, Norman Osborn, and Captain Stacy are included in the script, but with the amount of characters already featured,
It's decided to save the characters for future sequels.

The Liz Allen character from the original film is also absent from the film, in order to place emphasis on MJ, as the center of Peter and Harry's affections

Casting
With Hall and Ringwald off the project, Chris Columbus must begin the search for a new Spiderman.
Despite auditions from many of the era's teen heartthrobs, Columbus decides to cast Lucas, Lost Boys, and License To Drive ,actor Corey Haim.

Columbus feels Haim can be nerdy and awkward , while at the same time , has great comic timing , and can pull off the cockiness of Spiderman.

Teen actress Robyn Lively, who is also starring in The Karate Kid Part 3, is cast for the role of MJ , after Columbus watches some of the dallies filmed for that film.
While she has the tomboy , girl next door , charm of Ringwald's MJ, she also embodies the comicbook version of the character.

With Christopher Lloyd returning as Doc Ock, the rest of the Sinister Six cast is filled with character actors , known for playing villains.
The Legendary Christopher Lee is cast as The Vulture, Irish actor Patrick Bergin is cast in the Role of Kraven The Hunter, Lively's Karate Kid 3 costar Martin Kove , is cast as Sandman, Keith David is cast as Electro, and Brion James, of Bladerunner is cast as The Scorpion.

The Role of MJ's boyfriend ,and Peter's rival ,goes to Josh Charles , while Katherine Helmond , like Llyod, is only the second returning cast mate ,from the original film.

Reception
The film is released in the Winter Holiday Season of 1989 , with alot of anticipations and questions surrounding the film.
Will it be as big hit as the 1986 film ? Can Haim rival Hall's performance as Spiderman?
Will the film be any good ?
Ultimately , while the film receives as much more mixed reception from critics , the general audiences ends up embracing the film for it's epic action scenes ,
late 80s teen comedy, and it's special FX.
While not the in depth character and teen drama of Hughes film, Columbus delivers a much more comicbook and family friendly film than even Hughes does.

Haim's portrayal of Spiderman is embraced by diehard fans of the comics , and fans end up preferring Haim and Lively's Peter and MJ to Hall and Ringwald's versions.

However, the film inevitably is compared to the original , with the consensus is that Spiderman Part Two is better comic book adaptation of the source material, while Hughes's Spiderman film is considered the better film overall.

With the film performing slightly better than the original , and between the number of toys , video games, and another hit soundtrack , plans for a third Spiderman film , set for Spiderman's 30th anniversary , in 1992, are set in motion.

SPIDERMAN PART III ( 1992)
Director : Christopher Cain
1700786765879.png

Project History
Though the first two Spiderman films were hits in the 1980s, the second film was very expensive , and the producers were forced to tighten their belts for a third film.
Gone would be multiple villains , and grand scale set pieces from the last film.
This time around, the goal would be to tell a much smaller scale and emotional story like Hughes's first film , focusing more on the interpersonal relationships of the characters , than the over the top spectacle of part two .

The last films director, Christopher Columbus, decided to pursue other projects, and with John Hughes still refusing to return, Producers set out for a new director.
Producers wanted a director who'd delivered smaller budgeted films , yet also had experience working with Big name actors.
Producers eventually turned to Young Guns director Christopher Cain , in hopes that he would deliver a third Spiderman film on time, and under budget.
The Project would go into full swing by the Spring of 1991 for a Summer 1992 release date.

Script
It was always intended to introduce Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin as the villain of the 3rd film.
Norman would serve, ironically ,as an unexpected father figure to Peter , despite the bitter rivalry between Peter and his Son Harry over MJ.
But by night, Norman would become the Green Goblin , who would become a new Major threat after 3 years of relative quite for Spiderman

At the same time , the writers also wanted to introduce Gwen Stacy, a college student , and science wiz who Peter would fall in love , and her Police Captain Father , George Stacy , who sought to bring the Wall Crawler to Justice.
Peter and Gwen's relationship would become all consuming , driving him further away from MJ, as she struggles with her feelings for Peter while Still with Harry.

Given Green Goblin long publication history, it was decided to adapted the famous " The Night Gwen Stacy Died " and The Death Of George Stacy , stories for the 3rd film.

However , unlike the comics, Green Goblin would be responsible for the deaths of both Gwen and George Stacy, leading to a brutal final confrontation between Spiderman and The Green Goblin in a wherehouse, were the Green Goblin, would be impaled on his own glider .

The Producers knew the story would be much darker and more mature than the previous two films, with the Police and The Public holding Spiderman responsible for the Deaths of The Stacys and Norman Osborn .

The film would also end with an emotional argument between Peter and MJ , with a grief stricken Peter laying into MJ, over all of their baggage from the previous two films .

MJ , in a fit of anger, then reveals that she knows Peter is Spiderman, and that caring that secret has torn her apart since the events of the first film.

The screenwriters consider part 3 their Empire Strikes Back, with it's hero left bruised ,broken, and wary about the future as the world is about to come after him for Crimes he did not commit.

The plan was to leave the threads hanging for a 4th film which would see the introduction of The Daily Bugle, The Black Cat, and Venom.

Casting
Haim and Lively both returned for Spiderman Part 3 after renegotiating for a pay raise from the first film.
Josh Charles also reprised his role as Harry from the 2nd film.

The role of Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin, went to Robocop and Twin Peaks actor Ray Wise , for his uncanny ability to play stern and underhanded CEO , while at the same, to being able to shift to manic , scene stealing , psychopath , to play The Green Goblin.

For the role of Gwen , Producers wanted an actress familiar to Young audiences .
Christopher Cain ultimately nabbed Beverly Hills 90210 actress Jennie Garth to play the brillant, and Beautiful ,Gwen Stacy .
Jaw's Roy Scheider was Cain's only choice for the role of Captain Stacy , while Katherine Helmond once again reprised her role as Aunt May .

The much leaner cast, meant that the budget could be kept in check, unlike the last film, which dealt with 6 villains, each requiring their own costumes , and extensive special effects.

Reception
Upon the films release , the film's ending shocked general audiences , including parents who had no idea the film would be as dark as it turned out .
While several critics praised the second film for showing the real world consequences of Spiderman's life , other critics felt the film went way out of line for a product that would meant to appeal to children.
Many other critics felt that the film should have retained the tone of the first film, and felt the franchise had gone way off track .
At the same time , fans of the comics loved the film, and defended it's relative accuracy to the comics .

While the film made a profit on it's much smaller budget , the negative backlash from parental groups , and polarized audience and critical reception made the studio nervous.
Subsequently, plans for a Part 4 were put on hold as the studio reassessed the future of the franchise.

In the time between Part 3 and 4 , Haim and Lively would leave the franchise , and Cain would not be invited back to the director's chair.

In the 30 years since the films release, it received a positive reappraisal , with many fans and critics citing the film as their favorite in the trilogy of films

THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN ( 1996)
Director : Kevin Williamson
Script : Kevin Williamson and Joss Whedon
1700843364245.png

Project History
The very public fallout of Spiderman Part 3 left the studio extremely shaken .
Consequently, The studio heads felt everything from the last film had to go , from the more somber and serious tone, to the Producers, Director, writers, and even The Main cast.
Taking a page from The Halloween Franchise, producers felt the next film should be more of a sequel to Spiderman Part 2 .
The studio felt the next film should neglect and ignore the Death Of The Stacys, Norman Osborn, and The MJ Cliffhanger , which were , at that time, considered the least popular elements of the last film.

As a result, the film would be, what we call today, a soft reboot with connections to the earlier films , but ignoring the continuity of the last film.
The popularity of the 90s Spiderman Animated Series , demonstrated to execs that the films could still be fun , while balancing dramatic elements.

In the spring of 1994, Execs began seeking out screenwriters and taking pitches for the next film.
Writers Kevin Williamson and Joss Whedon both introduced pitches for a more youth oriented ,action comedy take on Spiderman, with a 90s flare.
They wanted a film with the heart and humor of Clueless , Yet the fight scenes of films like Mortal Kombat.
The new Producers at the helm of the franchise loved their takes on Peter Parker's next adventure, and quickly hired both of them to pen the next film.
Additionally, they hired Williamson to helm the project, which would be released in the summer of 1996.

Script
The new film would shift radically in tone from the last film , and would place emphasis more on the fun and adventurous tones of the 60s era comics, while introducing the everyday , off beat Struggles of Peter, who would be a graduate Student .

Peter would now be working at the Daily Bugle to pay for Grad school and to make ends meet, and would have to endure an over the top boss who hated Spiderman, and dismissed Parker's work.

Spiderman is considered a hero to many in the city , and a threat to Organized Crime Boss The Kingpin.
Kingpin would be Spiderman's arch nemesis who always seemed one step away from the Wall crawler.

Conversely, Spiderman was a hard man to kill, and has proven to be a consistent thorn in Kingpin's side disrupting many of his criminal operations.
The film would feature Spiderman rogues The Rhino and Shocker as Kingpins henchmen .

With the producers deciding to sideline the Mary Jane character , the writers instead turned to The Sexy and mysterious Black Cat, aka Felicia Hardy ,who capture the ire of Kingpin,
And the attraction of Spiderman.

Black Cat's alter ego, Felica Hardy, would be a wealthy , young grad student by day, and the jewel thief by night.

Ultimately, Spiderman and Black Cat would unite to bring down the Kingpin, who framed Felicia's Father for a crime he did not commit.
The film would end on a high note, with the door open to future sequels.

Casting
With Corey Haim no longer playing the role , and Anthony Michael Hall consider too old to play Spiderman again, Williamson was intent on casting a new actor to fit his version of Peter Parker.
This would be a Spiderman for the 90s, unlike the last films, which were still very much rooted in the 80s.

While several young actors from around the world were considered , it was ultimately unknown writer, and actor ,Nicholas Brendon who got the role of Peter Parker.
Whedon recommend him for the role after casting him in his own upcoming Buffy The Vampire tv series.
Whedon and Williamson felt Brendon had the right amount of humor, snark, and heart to play Peter Parker.

For the role of Black Cat, the producers wanted a bigger named actress.
After the likes Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Liv Tyler auditioned for the part , The Mask bombshell Cameron Diaz secured the role of Felicia Hardy .

He sense of humor, sexiness, and physicality made her the perfect counter point to Brendon's self effacing Spiderman.

The role of Kingpin went to UK actor Robbie Coltrane after producers were impressed by his role in the James Bond film Goldeneye.

The rest of the cast would be filled out with character actors such as R Lee Emery as Jameson, Michael Wincott as The Shocker, Constance Towers taking over the role of Aunt May, and Andrew Bryniarski as The Rhino.

Reception
4 years after Spiderman 3 divided audiences , The Amazing Spiderman was released in May of 1996 to positive reviews.
Many critics felt the film breathed new life into the decade long franchise with Brendon receiving high praise for his interpretation of Peter Parker.
Audiences also viewed the film favorably receiving a A- Cinemascore .

The film ended up out performing the last two Spiderman films , with the film remaining in theaters into the fall, then becoming a hit again on home video.
Audiences seemed to approve of the younger, hipper, approach to the character , while some critics felt the film may have been a bit " too safe" .

The Success of The Amazing Spiderman guaranteed that the franchise would continue , with ASM serving as the beginning of a new trilogy of films.

THE SPECTACULAR SPIDERMAN ( 1998)
Director : Kevin Williamson
Screenplay : Kevin Williamson and Joss Whedon
1700851439181.png

Project History
Having rejuvenated the Spiderman franchise , plans for a 5th installment were fast tracked , with the producers seeing the franchise moving forward into the 2000s .
Like The Bond franchise, Producers felt that the deck may need to be changed from time to time, but that the Box Office proved, 10 years after the first film, that franchise had staying power.
Hoping to avoid repeating the mistakes of the first trio of films, the studio wooed back an extremely busy Kevin Williamson to direct, and Josh Whedon to pen the script.
Between Williamson's Scream and upcoming Dawson's Creek series,
The film went quickly into Production after the release of The Amazing Spiderman, and The Spectacular Spiderman would be released once again , In the Summer Of 1998.

Script
For Spectacular Spiderman, Joss Whedon wanted to tackle the black suit saga and the hugely popular Venom character , feeling he would make a great threat to Spiderman, and offered an interesting contrast as the opposite side of the Peter Parker coin.

While Whedon didn't want to go as dark as Spiderman Part two, Whedon wanted the film to delve more into the scarier aspects of Venom , while at the same time , keeping the humor of Buffy and Scream.

Taking inspiration from the Spiderman Animated Series story , Spiderman would encounter the alien life form after saving John Jameson mission from Space .
The Symbiote would bond with Peter giving him enhanced abilities and turning his costume black .

The suit would change his personality, making him more confident , intelligent, and arrogant .
Peter's burgeoning relationship with coworker Betty Brant , would be dashed as Peter begins to openly flirt with other women , while being jealous of Betty's past relationship with his coworker Eddie Brock.

At the same time, his relationship with May became strained as his paranoia increased after finding out that May has stayed in touch with MJ.

Throughout the film , the symbiote would begin to slowly alienate Peter from all those he cared about , in order to isolate him, and eventually, take him over.
The result would be Peter breaking up with Betty, Cutting off his Aunt May, and confronting JJ about the Bugle's coverage of Spiderman

Eventually, Peter would reject the symbiote , which would then fall to Brock.

Brock would become Venom, and make Peter's life hell , by going after those he cared about , including his Aunt May , Betty, and the flame he hadn't spoken to in years, Mary Jane.

The film would end with an epic brutal with Venom in downtown Manhattan , with Spiderman being victorious .

In the end , Peter would apologize to Betty , who would forgive him , but tell him that he needed to reconcile with his Aunt and with MJ.

The film would end MJ showing up at his apartment , with hints that the two would reconcile .

Casting
With Brendon and alot of the cast of ASM returning, only 4 new roles needed to be filled.

For the part of Betty, Williamson only offered the role to Neve Campbell , feeling she had the right amount of beauty and spunk to play the object of Peter and Eddie's affections.

The role of Eddie Brock would go to actor Jack Busey , the son of actor Gary Busey.

When the producers decided to reintroduce MJ in part 5, they wanted an actress who had the girl next door quality of Ringwald's MJ, while having the sly cleverness of Lively's MJ.

Williamson decided to go with TV actress Alicia Witt, to take over the role of MJ for Spectacular Spiderman, and for future films as well.

Joe Morton would round out the cast as Robbie Robertson.

Reception
Like the last film , Spectacular Spiderman went over well with Audiences and comic fans alike , with Brendon once again receiving praise for playing multiple aspects of Spiderman.
The film also boosted the popularity of the Venom character which lead to rumors of the character getting his own spin off film.

Comics fans enjoyed the film for the most part , and welcomed the return of MJ , who'd been absent on film for 6 years .
Many critics felt while the film was entertaining enough , the alien symbiote storyline was " too far out of this world " as opposed to the more grounded Earthbound struggles of the previous films.

Nevertheless, Audiences across the board tended to diverge from the critics.
The film went on the to be the highest grossing film in the franchise to date , and plans would be put in motion for Spiderman 6 ,in 2001.

The executives probably wouldn't want to introduce/have Black Cat and the Kingpin (those '80s comics focused on them did feel relatively dark to me) when they were trying to lighten and family viewers-ize the series but Whedon probably could indeed have made pretty family viewers-ized versions of them while also particularly appealing to teenage viewers, also really interesting cool idea of Kevin Williamson also being involved, getting more into superheroes than horror at least initially. But I don't think most of the big comics fans would accept a soft reboot to the extent of Mary Jane and her big revelation being just left out and ignored.

I think we'd have to keep in mind, that execs and productions back in the 80s and 90s, weren't exactly concerned with comicbook accuracy and representation .

In a time when these products were few and far between, and when the vast majority of comicbook characters ,and their storylines ,weren't common knowledge to the average filmgoer , the studios, and filmmakers alot of times, had little concern about taking characters and changing them.

So the execs probably wouldn't objected to Kingpin and Black Cat , if they were adapted in a way similar to the 90s animated series , which is what I envisioned them doing .

But I do agree though, that alot of the big comic fans wouldn't have accepted a soft reboot sidelining MJ.

It couldn't really happen with him already voicing the character in animation but I think Hank Azaria could have also made a good live action Venom in the '90s or '00s (I did enjoy that from Godzilla that he did play another journalist).

WEB OF SPIDER-MAN ( 2001)
Director : Kevin Williamson
Screenplay : Joss Whedon
1701037096013.png

Project History
With the success of the Williamson / Whedon Spiderman films , a 3rd film in their trilogy, and the 6th film in the series, went into development in the Spring of 1999.
Williamson would return to direct , with Whedon once again, taking the writing duties .
The pairs busy schedules meant that their would be a 3 year gap between films , which gave the pair a chance to explore their prior commitments.
Once the producers, director, and writer regrouped , they set about crafting the next chapter in the Spiderman Saga, which was on track for release in the Summer Of 1999.

Script

While the idea of Carnage as a villain was briefly considered , Williamson suggested Spiderman faced an opponent who would attempt to gas light him , and those he cared about,
placing Spiderman in a game of cat and mouse .
Taking inspiration from his Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer films, Williamson wanted an almost supernatural, ghostlike threats , without the R rated violence.

They then began to toy with the idea of a hidden puppet master, whose identity would remain unknown to Spiderman, and the Audience , and would set up an all new mystery for future sequels.

Whedon hit on the idea of utilizing three villians who hadn't appeared in the film series yet, but complimented each other in terms of modius apperendi .
Mysterio and Chameleon , would be the two main villains of the film, working to discredit Spiderman , while tourmenting Peter Parker.
In the end it would turn out that they were hired by the true mastermind of the plot , The Hobgoblin, whose identity would remain anominous .

At the same time, the filmmakers felt it would be interesting to revisit prior plotlines and characters from the other films , which would be woven into the mystery behind the haunting of Peter Parker.

Nearly a decade after the polarizing response to Spiderman Part 3, Whedon decided to bring back Harry Osborn as MJ jilted former lover ,who held a grudge against his old rival Peter ,and Spiderman.
Harry would be seen as an ambiguous figure in the film , who may or may not, be funding Mysterio and Chameleon.

In addition to Harry Osborn, the character of Liz Allen was also brought back for the first time since the very first John Hughes film, this time around, as Harry's fiancée, who still carried a torch for the Spiderman , who saved her life at the prom years ago.

Flash Thompson would also make an appearance ,as a potential suspect in the haunting, and gaslighting ,of Spiderman.

Mary Jane would return as Peter's love interest , with the two of them finally dealing with their feelings for each other.

The film would end with Spiderman rescuing MJ from a labyrinth of death traps and illusions , from Mysterio and The Chameleon, all the while ,their wealthy benefactor Hobgoblin, would remain in the shadows, beaten, but ready to fight another day , or in this case, a future film.

Casting
Nicholas Brendan and Alicia Witt both reprised their roles as Peter and MJ , but several new actors needed to be cast to fill the roles of Harry, Liz , and Flash.

That Thing You Do ! and Can't Hardly Wait, actor Ethan Embry ,was cast as the frustrated and bitter Harry Osborn, taking over the role from original actor, Josh Charles.

American Pie actress Shannon Elizabeth, was cast in the role of Liz Allen , who had been previously played by Mia Sara ,in the John Hughes film.

The role of Flash Thompson went to Bring It On actor Richard Hillman.

For the trio of villains , Williamson wanted lesser known, but talented actors who could disappear into the roles .

Dark City's Rufus Sewell was cast to play the bombastic and flamboyant Mysterio, while Trainspotting and The Full Monty actor ,Robert Carlyle, was cast as the master of disguise and deception, The Chameleon.

For the role of the Hobgoblin, Williamson chose his Scream 2 actor ,Timothy Olyphant , for his ability to walk the line between sociopath and psychopath.
Olyphant signed a three picture deal , with the idea that his character would return his identity would be revealed in future films.

The rest of the Daily Bugle supporting cast would reprise their roles , though Neve Campbell would not appear ,due to prior commitments.

Reception
While The Web Of Spiderman received generally favorable reviews , there was a feeling that the series was running out of steam after 15 years.

The film made back it's budget , but was not as big a finical success as The Amazing Spiderman and The Spectacular Spiderman.

While the film went over generally well with comic fans and Audiences alike , the same level of excitement in the franchise was no longer present .

With the 6th film in the series underperforming expectations , the studio decided to regroup once again .

Undoubtably, there would be another Spiderman film , but after 15 years, the studio began to contemplate whether or not the time had come to start over.
